Lookie Loo . . . A Bathroom Redo! July 29, 2011

Our shower stall is not in great shape.

Tired of looking at the once white (now gray) grout,  we started exploring the idea of redoing the master bath.

We went across the street to Harbour Isles and checked out their model homes and picked out the bathroom we would like to have:

From there, we headed round to the home improvement store to price tiles, fixtures, cabinets, toilets, medicine chests.  In short order, we decided we do not have enough money to transform our bath from where it is to where we want it to be.

Somewhat relieved, we put that project on hold and turned our attention elsewhere.  We did not have to look far before we found the perfect project to tackle.  Even more than ours, Tigger’s Loo desperately needed a redo:

Yesterday, for the grand total of $18, BFF completed building a new and improved throne for the King of our Castle:

We are confident that Tigger will not bemoan the fact that it does not have double sinks or granite countertops.

Like us, he’s easy to please!

And, now, to join in Sidey’s Weekend Theme ~ Joke, a bit of bathroom humor:

A stranger, seated next to a young girl on an airplane, turned to her and said, “Let’s talk. I’ve heard that flights go faster if you strike up a conversation with your fellow passengers.”

The young girl, an avid reader who had just opened her book, Too Much Stuff, closed it slowly and said to the stranger, “What would you like to talk about?”

“Oh, I don’t know,” said the stranger.  “How about nuclear power?”

“OK,” she said. “That could be an interesting topic.  But first let me ask you a question.  A horse, a cow, and a deer all eat the same stuff – grass – yet a deer excretes little pellets, while a cow turns out a flat patty, and a horse produces clumps of dried grass. Why do you suppose that is?”

The stranger, visibly surprised by the young girl’s intelligence, thinks about it and says, “Hmm, I have no idea.”

To which the future Op-Ed contributor replies, “Do you really feel qualified to discuss nuclear power when you don’t know shit?”

A horse produces 22 pounds of stuff a day. At the turn of the last century New York City had at least 20,000 horses. Do the math.

nrhatch - July 29, 2011

Glad I don’t have to scoop that poop! 😀

Paula Tohline Calhoun - July 29, 2011

Yup! And every single bit of it was recyclable, usable, or just biodegraded back into the earth, to make more hay for them to eat. . . Wonder when humans will figure that maybe that was a better way?

Rosa - July 29, 2011

I have a dream to someday live in a house with composting toilets! Someday…

nrhatch - July 29, 2011

That’s an excellent idea. We toyed with the idea at one point. Maybe one day it will be the norm.

nrhatch - July 29, 2011

The world would be a far different place if we still used horses (and bicycles) to move from Point A to Point B.

2. Cindy - July 29, 2011

ROTFLMAO!!! 😀

nrhatch - July 29, 2011

Yay! As PTC would say, TIOOMFP. 😆

3. Paula Tohline Calhoun - July 29, 2011

Here we go loop-di-LOO! Here we go loop-di-lah! Here we go loop-di-LOO! All on a Saturday night! Poor Tigger – once a week – must be hard (pun intended 😉 ) on him.

Great DYI by BFF. BTW, TIOOMFC

nrhatch - July 29, 2011

Very punny! 🙄

4. Vix @ LittleMissEverything - July 29, 2011

Hehe 🙂

nrhatch - July 29, 2011

Tigger hasn’t yet “christened” his throne . . . we hope he doesn’t miss the box. 😆

5. Rufus' Food and Spirits Guide - July 29, 2011

Well at least the cat can poo in luxury!

nrhatch - July 29, 2011

Long live the King! 😉

6. SuziCate - July 29, 2011

You tickled my funny bone! I’m sure the KING is happy and proud! Wish we’d thought to do that when we had cats…litter can be so messy when cats “dig and bury”! I’m sure the next expensive project you plan, the KING can come up with a less expensive and physically exhausting plan to his benefit!

nrhatch - July 29, 2011

Glad you enjoyed! We had something similar in MD ~ it really does keep tracking and kicking of litter to a more manageable area.

You’re probably right ~ instead of an expensive kitchen redo for us, with new countertops and appliances, he’ll have us revamp his food station with a new placemat.

7. CMSmith - July 29, 2011

LOL funny. 🙂

nrhatch - July 29, 2011

If you’re looking for inspiration, please join Sidey’s weekend challenge ~ Joke. It’s going to be a laugh a minute. 😀

8. kateshrewsday - July 29, 2011

Lucky Tigger: a plush new revamp for his bathroom…a worthy repository love the story.

nrhatch - July 29, 2011

Thanks, Kate. Tigger is a lucky cat . . . we treat him like royalty.

9. Barbara Gunn - July 29, 2011

Go Tigger go!!

nrhatch - July 29, 2011

Bwahaha! That’s perfect, BG.

From now on, I’ll be more cautious about saying “You go, girl!” 😉

10. Lisa (Woman Wielding Words) - July 29, 2011

I love the bathroom redo! Tigger is one lucky cat.

nrhatch - July 29, 2011

Isn’t he, though?

11. souldipper - July 29, 2011

Tigger has trained his two-leggers well in the priority department!

nrhatch - July 29, 2011

He gets annoyed whenever we leave . . . we’re forgiven if we come home with cat treats! 🙂

12. Rosa - July 29, 2011

Tigger’s loo is looking fit for a king! And that joke made me laugh out loud!!

nrhatch - July 29, 2011

Wouldn’t you just love to meet that little girl? I know she’s out there, some where. 😀

13. Maggie - July 29, 2011

I laughed out loud at the title of this post. I like the tiles on the inside of the shower – nice color.

nrhatch - July 29, 2011

Me too! That bathroom is almost exactly what I want ~ but with a shower and no tub.

14. nancycurteman - July 29, 2011

I’m adding that joke to my repertoire. Often on a plane I just want to sit and read—not chat. Now I know how to quickly end a budding conversation.

nrhatch - July 29, 2011

I feel the same way on planes ~ because I know I can’t get up and move if the conversation stalls. 😉

15. Booksphotographsandartwork - July 29, 2011

Oh I read too fast, I thought the photo was the bathroom you wanted to get rid and I thought for sure that had lost your mind! I would be over the moon to have that bathroom. Ours is beyond needing to be redone but in an old house you start one thing and it backtracks from there just like that movie, The Money Pit with Tom Hanks. Only our house is a extremely small and not old enough to have character but just to be old. As for the cat box oh yeah I am going to get my husband right on that because I am tired of the cat litter all over the place. Miss Kitty comes flying out of her box like a bat out of hell and makes a sharp right sending litter everywhere.

nrhatch - July 29, 2011

I would be over the moon with that bathroom too! Ours is about 20 years old and very WHITE ~ white toilet, white tiles, white sink, white vanity, white shower, white walls, etc. Giving it an update is on our Wish List.

Having a box (cardboard, wood, or plastic) with higher sides around the litter box should catch most of the flying litter when “Miss Kitty” bolts out of the box.

16. jeanne - July 29, 2011

I love good potty humor…thanks for the laugh

nrhatch - July 29, 2011

Glad you enjoyed, Jeanne! 😀

17. SidevieW - July 30, 2011

oooh could he come over and create one for my cats as well please

nrhatch - July 30, 2011

Judging from the comments this morning, BFF needs to crank up the production line to keep up with the demand! 😆

SidevieW - July 31, 2011

i’d like one or two

nrhatch - July 31, 2011

They are now endorsed with Tigger’s “seal of approval.” 😉

18. jannatwrites - July 30, 2011

I love the litterbox idea. I’m constantly cleaning up cat litter (though I’m unsure how much is from the cats versus my older son’s sloppy scooping.)

Great joke, too. I needed the laugh tonight 🙂

nrhatch - July 30, 2011

The outer box doesn’t catch all of the flying litter, but it catches most of it. A quick sweep outside the box gets the rest. Unless a sloppy scooper is on the prowl. 😉

Glad you enjoyed the joke.

19. eof737 - July 30, 2011

No, she didn’t! What a hoot… though I would hesitate to do that as I wouldn’t want to get clobbered on a plane. 🙂
Nice job on the bathrooms; large and small… What is that white container holding Tyger’s litter box? Maybe I can pick one up for our cat Tangy. TY! 🙂

nrhatch - July 30, 2011

That’s the box that BFF built to redo Tigger’s Loo! 😀

20. adeeyoyo - July 30, 2011

Tigger’s new throne must put him in 7th Heaven, Nancy!

nrhatch - July 30, 2011

He finally “christened” it last night . . . giving it his “seal of approval.”

What surprises me is that the moving box lid we were using lasted for 2 years! We had intended it as a temporary solution until we got settled. How time flies!

21. Naomi - July 30, 2011

LOL!! Brilliant joke, Nancy; love that bathroom, and most impressed with Tigger’s upgraded throne 😀

nrhatch - July 30, 2011

At last, a throne fit for a king! 😀

22. Alannah Murphy - July 30, 2011

Nice makeover for the feline loo. I am however, deeply offended by that joke, and I have to tell you it’s a load of shite 😉 *giggles*

nrhatch - July 30, 2011

Alas, Alannah, I feared you might take offense, as you are of a “sensitive” nature. I trust the shock to your system will be short lived. 😯

Alannah Murphy - July 31, 2011

Yes, I faint whenever someone curses 😉

nrhatch - July 31, 2011

😀

23. flyinggma - July 30, 2011

Love the story and happy for Tigger. We are like you. I priced out new countertops and a cabinet for around my relocated refrigerator. Way more money than we want to spend while we have 2 daughters still in college. It will have to wait until at least one of them is done with school, perhaps both. 😦

nrhatch - July 30, 2011

Tigger has adopted his new box. Our other cats would not have liked the new paint smell, but Tigger doesn’t mind it.

As much as I enjoy watching design shows on TV, I’m pretty happy with what we have . . . even if it is all white on white.

We probably will get new countertops for the kitchen in an “island” color (teal, aqua, green) at some point. And we do need to do something with the shower before it starts leaking. For now, we’re just going to re-caulk.

24. hugmamma - July 30, 2011

We’re hoping to redo our master bath next year. Since our’s is a 70’s house, we have a 3/4 MB. It’s been fine for 14 years, especially since we have 2 other full-size baths. But with the linoleum starting to buckle, the toilet leaking off and on, the vanity going to pot-ty, and our bodies expanding in middle-age…it’s time for a makeover. You and I will have to check-in as time passes, to see how we’re doing with renovations. When they begin, that is. 🙂

loved the joke…will have to remember it. 😉

nrhatch - July 30, 2011

That’s why we planned to do the whole bath rather than just replacing the shower ~ we want to raise the toilet and the vanity a few inches for ease of use as we age.

I like having a shower in the master bath, rather than a tub. I rarely take baths unless I’m chilled to the bone mid-winter which rarely happens now that we live in a subtropical climate.

Have fun planning out your re-do. We’ll compare notes. 😀

25. therealsharon - July 31, 2011

That bathroom looks just like our apartment one…..as far as where everything is situated, but definitely not as nice floors and countertops! Living in an apartment, we can’t change up everything the way we could if we lived in a house, so we just have to live with what we have…and oddly enough, that kind of is relieving to me….I like the idea of not worrying about changing up stuff…..

nrhatch - July 31, 2011

That’s a bit how I felt ~ relieved that I didn’t have to start shopping. 😀

26. Tilly Bud - July 31, 2011

I love that joke! May I use it? I’ll save it for next year, but will still credit you.

You did Tigger proud 🙂

nrhatch - July 31, 2011

Share it whenever you choose. 😀

Tigger’s a happy cat! And if that isn’t an oxymoron, what is?
