A Wink And A Smile! August 12, 2023

Yesterday was my Great Aunt Edie’s 131st birthday. Here she is (on the left), with her sister (my maternal grandmother), and her brother-in-law (my maternal grandfather).
After wishing her a Happy Birthday, I did a few chores in the kitchen before heading into the guest room. Once there, I opened our gift drawer (where potential presents await the presenting) to add something to our stash.
My eyes landed on a stack of gift boxes packed up a few months ago to give various and assorted nieces for Christmas. I hadn’t opened any of them since I packed them up back in April or May.
On a whim, out of curiosity, I opened the top box and smiled. Big time.
The selected box just happened to contain Elsie Heard’s gold locket. Elsie Heard being Aunt Edie’s mother and my great-grandmother.
But wait! There’s more.
Also in the box?
A photo of Great Aunt Edie smiling up at me.
I had no idea that the photo (taken in my parent’s backyard back in 1980 on the occasion of their 25th Anniversary) was in the box. I had not opened the box searching for it or for any other remembrance of Edie on her birthday.
It just happened. With perfect timing!
Such a lovely surprise!

Isn’t that wonderful! Serendipity can be such a prankster. Happy Birthday to Great Aunt Edie. 🎂
Serendipity and co-wink-i-dinks = pranksters of the best sorts!
No harm. No foul. Just FUN!
OH, I Love it! 🥰
Happy Birthday to your Great-Aunt Edie! You will be smiling the rest of the day now. Happy weekend!
Aunt Edie was such a lovely lady. This unplanned and unexpected tribute to her ON HER BIRTHDAY made my day.
There may be far more to this life than meets the eye, eh?
Love this! Enjoy the memories Nancy 💕
Thanks, Val.
Edie’s Scottish, btw. From Aberdeen with summers spent in the Orkney Isles.
She must have been made from the strongest stuff. These Doric women are extraordinary❣️
She was extraordinary. One of my most favorite people ever.
A mild criticism from her:
“It takes all kinds.”
A stronger criticism from her:
“There’s nothing so queer as folk.” 😀
Did it just happen….
Or is it Edie’s way of saying hello?
❤️
Probably the latter, RG. The timing was so perfect, it definitely felt orchestrated . . . by Edie or a fellow spectre! 😀
Your gift boxes are such a nice idea. It sounds like you gather up momentos from boxes and then wrap them as gifts rather than throwing them away or giving them to strangers. Is that right?
Sort of. I cleaned out my jewelry box a few months ago and selected “heirloom” pieces (mostly Scottish broaches) to give to my nieces.
I boxed them up in small gift boxes for delivery in December. And, then, I forgot about what was in which box.
Yesterday, while adding something else to the cache, I happened to notice the top box and wondered what was in it. I was delighted to see the heirloom locket belonging to Edie’s mother PLUS Edie’s photo . . . which I hadn’t remembered sticking in the box. A delightful bit of serendipity to celebrate Edie’s birthday!
You are also right that I try to re-home and re-use gifts and gift wrappings whenever I can.
Indeed that was a lovely surprise. What a treasure!
It made my day, LM.
If I had stumbled upon it any other day, it would have made me smile (because thinking of Edie always makes me smile) . . . but finding it on Edie’s birthday was, as they say, PRICELESS!
I love the serendipity of your finds, just magic! I have a ‘gifting’ drawer too but don’t think there are such treasures in there thought they do sometimes turn up elsewhere. 🙂
I’ve seen some of your treasures and hope that you are able to pass them along to the Live Wires on an age-appropriate basis.
I’m also re-gifting some of the woodwork made by my father and grandfather . . . but I’m not ready to part with ALL of it yet. 😀
Odd coincidence if you believe in them. Happy birthday Aunt Edie!
Thanks, Kate. A perfectly timed odd coincidence that felt like a Wink!
Absolutely a wink and a smile! Such synchronicity! I love this outcome and it made me smile as well. I loved the family photo, as well, Nancy!
Hi Debra! I love your new photo as well! You have a great smile too. 😀
Thank you, Nancy!
Such happy looking sisters.
Great memories.
I agree, Kathy!
Wow…the family resemblance is uncanny. Happy b-day, Great Aunt Edie! I echo Rivergirl’s comment.
Thanks, Mark. I choose to believe that it was Edie’s way of saying “hey.”
