1. Rainee - June 17, 2014

Wow, Nancy, just think of all the books you could write about your life experience. I always knew you were an interesting person 🙂

nrhatch - June 17, 2014

Thanks, Rainee. When I compare myself to others, “they” seem far more adventurous, daring, well-traveled, etc. It was fun putting together this list and revisiting so many wonderful experiences I’ve had.

2. suzicate - June 17, 2014

This is quite a list…I admit I didn’t read all after about 125 but glanced…will go back to read later. What I see is an interesting, fun, and well rounded life. My favorite is you wore your mother’s wedding gown! I’d wanted to do that but my mother didn’t have a traditional wedding gown, and the dress had gotten tossed. I’d dreamed of my daughter wearing mine…didn’t get a daughter but I still have the gown. (Perhaps a granddaughter some day or maybe I’ll take it apart and make an art quilt, ha!)

nrhatch - June 17, 2014

I didn’t expect that most people would be able to swallow this list in a single gulp. I planned to stop at 100 . . . but I kept thinking of things I wanted to add . . . same at 200, 225, 250, 275. When I got to 300, I said STOP! (But I might keep adding to the list when I think of things). It was a fun exercise.

I didn’t plan to wear mom’s gown, but I didn’t feel like shopping for a wedding dress. I don’t like to go clothes shopping. I tried hers on, it fit, so I crossed wedding gown off the list. 😎

I do wish I had kept squares of all my favorite shirts and jeans to fashion into a quilt. That would have been a fun way to hang on to the memories.

3. valleygrail - June 17, 2014

This list was a joy to read! I kept thinking joie de vivre, joie de vivre.

nrhatch - June 17, 2014

Thanks, valleygrail. I had a blast working on (playing with) the creation of this list. One memory would prompt another and another and another. I didn’t look at anything to spark my memory either. Maybe one day I’ll go through our photo albums and add another 300 (or so) experiences.

Your comment reminds me of a favorite quote ~ we can only live happily ever after on a moment by moment basis.

4. Judson - June 17, 2014

Living my entire life in the Carolina’s and having worked for two major universities which afforded me wonderful world travel opportunities, it’s amazing how many of the things on your list (or very similar things), I’ve experienced as well! I’ve gone coast-to-coast camping in national parks, and I have family in south Florida, so I’ve done the Naples and Key West things too … small world after all. Still want to do the hot air balloon, though.

nrhatch - June 17, 2014

The hot air balloon ride was very interesting Judson ~ they are HOT and NOISY and sometimes tip over when they land. But none of us injured ourselves when the basket took a nose dive.

I had fun creating this list . . . a reflective appreciation for all that led me to this door.

5. NancyTex - June 17, 2014

What a lovely perspective; looking back at what you have experienced. Great list, NH.

nrhatch - June 17, 2014

You’ve been to the Grand Canyon, admired its vistas, and hiked down amid the smell of donkeys.

In contrast, my first visit found me as a terrible teen refusing to get out of the car to see more rocks. My second visit found us staring into pea soup fog unable to see even 2 feet in front of us.

Third times the charm, right?

NancyTex - June 17, 2014

It is an incredible thing to see, that’s for sure. Although Bryce, for my money, is neck and neck with GC for impressiveness.

One of these days I should make a list of the amazing places I’ve seen and experienced around the world. So easy to forget how much you’ve accomplished when always looking for the next adventure.

nrhatch - June 17, 2014

I’m with you on Bryce. One of my favorite places out west. All those amazing Hoodoos casting spells and shadows.

If you tackle a Life List . . . have fun. It amazed me how fast this one flew together. And I know I’m still just scratching the surface.

6. Kate @ Did That Just Happen? - June 17, 2014

Boy oh boy! What a great idea – and what amazing life experiences you have had!! I love it! I’m still jealous of the pineapple tree! And I’m so glad you included a picture of a watercolor you’ve painted! How awesome! I’m glad you shared a look back – and forward – of your life!

nrhatch - June 17, 2014

And I’ve had fried ice cream! 😎

I enjoyed looking at your list last night, Kate. Creating a forward or backwards list adds perspective.

7. Jill Weatherholt - June 17, 2014

Wow! What a list, Nancy! I feel like your life just passed me by.:)
You need to write a book…if you aren’t already working on one.
I’m glad to see you tried Thrasher fries on the boardwalk in OC…nothing better! 🙂
Aside from traveling to a list places, I’d like to learn to play the piano.

nrhatch - June 17, 2014

I have LOTS of writing in notebooks but nothing I would call a book in progress. We’ll see.

Thrasher Fries = YUM!

There is a book How To Play Piano in 10 Easy Lessons. It enabled me to sit down and play a piece without having to practice it for days first.

Jill Weatherholt - June 17, 2014

I guess I first need to add “Buy a piano” to my list. 🙂

nrhatch - June 17, 2014

Or, perhaps, “rent a piano.”

8. Pix Under the Oaks - June 17, 2014

I loved this Nancy! It makes me all giddy and HAPPY.. 🙂

nrhatch - June 17, 2014

I had a blast working on this list, Pix! Glad you enjoyed it.

This is so cool Nancy. It captures your life like a patchwork quilt! Love how your thoughts moved from one to the next.
It made me realize how many of my own life experiences have been outside the US. Coming here at age 36 will do that! I have a lot to catch up on.
Let me know when you’re going to Scotland and Italy and I’ll recommend some great places to explore and eat 😉

nrhatch - June 17, 2014

Life is like a patchwork quilt! Great analogy, Val. Or as Carly Simon sang, “my life has been a tapestry . . . ”

Perhaps you could do a post about Scotland and Italy for all your visitors, Val. I’ll link it to this list to keep it handy.

10. elizabeth2560 - June 17, 2014

What a fantastic list! You have inspired me to do the same. one question re # 231; you have read how to simplify your life, have you done it?

nrhatch - June 17, 2014

Absolutely. Our life is MUCH simpler than before I read Elaine St. James wise words. We’ve downsized, cleared clutters, left jobs and locations that no longer resonated with who we’ve become, etc.

Enjoy creating your own list, Elizabeth. It was tons of fun.

11. BarbB - June 17, 2014

I really love this retro bucket list! I think of my life as a beautiful canvas filled with brilliant splashes of colour and deep contrasting darks! I think I will create the details of my canvas with a retro bucket list. So much accomplished and overcome! I am grateful! thanks for the idea>

nrhatch - June 17, 2014

Awesome! That’s the reason I decided to share the list . . . so that others might enjoy creating their own Retro Lists. Have fun.

12. ericjbaker - June 17, 2014

That’s a lot of blog posts! I’m at about 160. A bit behind.

Glad to see the Cape May lighthouse show up in there.

nrhatch - June 17, 2014

Some would say I’m “verbose.” I prefer “prolific.” 😎

We loved visiting the Cape May lighthouse. And the twin lighthouses in Navesink. We still want to visit the Key West lighthouse. I have a beautiful painting of it.

13. Don - June 17, 2014

Well done Nancy. I can imagine what putting a list together like this does for you. It’s something to certainly celebrate about. Hope all those future dreams also come to fruition for you. I think I’m going to put a list together. 🙂

nrhatch - June 17, 2014

Yay! I started working on this list “just for me” and had such a great time putting it together that I had to share the idea with others. Hope you have a blast creating a Retro Life List.

14. Eric Tonningsen - June 17, 2014

A delightful compilation, Nancy. Reminds me of the daily gratitude journal I’ve logged for years. It’s good to go back and visit, even if in memory, all that we have accomplished and experienced. It does help to keep appreciation and perspective at the fore, doesn’t it? 🙂

nrhatch - June 17, 2014

It does, indeed! Here’s to taking the occasional backwards glance to remind us to enjoy the journey.

15. jannatwrites - June 17, 2014

Wow, this is great! The list kept going… and going… and going – glad you’re here to keep adding to it, too! Several made me chuckle… especially like learning to cook and not poisoning anyone. THAT is good thing 🙂

I don’t have a bucket list and I don’t know if I could stay focused long enough to put together an accomplishments list!

nrhatch - June 17, 2014

Thus far, my record is unblemished ~ not a single fatality and 1000’s of satisfied appetites!

This list grew far longer than intended . . . in no time at all.

16. diannegray - June 17, 2014

That’s not a bucket list, that’s a Grand Canyon list! By the way – what happened when you stopped at the Grand Canyon without seeing the canyon twice? I’m intrigued 😉

nrhatch - June 17, 2014

My first visit found me as a terrible teen refusing to get out of the car to see more rocks.

My second visit found us staring into pea soup fog unable to see even 2 feet in front of us.

Third times the charm, right? 😎

17. joannevalentinesimson - June 17, 2014

Wow!! What a fantastic list! And it’s not over. Wonderful how you notice (and are grateful for) your life’s many little everyday experiences (miracles) as well as the less frequent awesome ones.
BTW, why didn’t you actually SEE the Grand Canyon?
Also, where is your Deer Lake?

joannevalentinesimson - June 17, 2014

Oops, I saw the answer to the Grand Canyon question in the comment above mine. Should have read all the comments before I asked. But maybe not.

nrhatch - June 17, 2014

No worries. I sometimes read comment threads on other blogs. I often don’t. Deer Lake is in Boonton, New Jersey. My grandparents used to take us there for picnics, swimming, and boating.

joannevalentinesimson - June 20, 2014

Our “Deer Lake” was in Clarkston, Michigan. My folks eventually bought a house there – after I had left home.

nrhatch - June 20, 2014

I bet the two lakes had something in common ~ deer stepping out of the morning mist to drink deep at shore’s edge.

18. Silver in the Barn - June 17, 2014

I’m happy to report that I’ve done an in-depth analysis of your life up ’til now, and it seems the food:travel enjoyment ratio is just exactly right!

nrhatch - June 17, 2014

Bwahaha! The list is a bit top heavy on food ~> a great pleasure of life that adds variety and texture to our days. 😎

19. Behind the Story - June 18, 2014

Oh my goodness! This is quite a list. Did you have fun writing it? It would be hard to write such a long, detailed FORWARD list. It’s good to have both lists, but counting our blessings is the best.

nrhatch - June 18, 2014

I did have fun creating the list, Nicki ~ the process brought happy memories and successfully resolved challenges to the surface.

Making a FORWARD list this long would create undue tension each time it came time to pick an item off the list to complete. It would be like walking into an ice cream parlor and having to choose from 300 flavors without being allowed to order our “default” flavor.

20. Three Well Beings - June 18, 2014

What wonderful lists! Both of them. 🙂 I’m impressed with how many adventures you’ve taken, and since the list isn’t complete, I’m suspecting there will be many happy years ahead. Your work is far form done, so you’ll have to stick around a long, long time, Nancy! 🙂

nrhatch - June 18, 2014

Thanks, Debra. We seldom know how many dances we have left on a dance card ~ Eric T. shared a video yesterday about a 97-year-old woman who is still spunky and “with it.” She made aging look like the perfect bookend to a full and happy life.

21. theonlycin - June 18, 2014

Jeepers, Nancy, that’s some retro list. What a full life – and counting. I don’t doubt you’ll achieve all the items on the future list. you go girl!

nrhatch - June 18, 2014

The first time I went “under the knife” (20 years ago), I remember lying on the gurney waiting to go into the O.R. and thinking that, if I didn’t resurface after the surgery, I had had a great life.

I still feel the same way. Every day. 😎

22. livelytwist - June 19, 2014

Wow! What I liked about it the most? By going backward, one sees that there is so much to be thankful for. I should do this someday. I’m glad you started a blog.

nrhatch - July 29, 2014

Thanks, Timi. I missed this comment when you posted it. I’m glad I started a blog too ~ it’s a great way to share what we’ve learned, get feedback on ideas, or just hang out and socialize.

23. Turquoise Compass - July 29, 2014

I have yet to ride in a hot air balloon and want to do so desperately!
Jessica

nrhatch - July 29, 2014

Fingers crossed that you’ll be able to accomplish that desire in the coming months. It’s been 20+ years since we flew over Palm Springs CA in a balloon . . . and the memory is still strong, like many of our once in a lifetime experiences.

Turquoise Compass - July 29, 2014

I know I will!
