Say What??? June 9, 2024

I bought a bag of Skinny Pop White Cheddar flavor popcorn which boasts, inter alia:
Pure Popped Perfection
No Artificial Ingredients
Dairy Free
Non GMO
Gluten Free
Peanut Free
Tree Nut Free
Preservative Free
No Artificial Flavors
Zero Trans Fat
and DELICIOUS!
BUT . . .
When I scanned the list of ACTUAL Ingredients, I learned that Skinny Pop uses “Natural Non-Dairy Cheddar Flavor.”
Say What???
If Non-Dairy Cheddar Flavor is a Natural Flavor that mimics the taste of Cheddar Cheese . . . why not list the actual ingredient by its Natural Non-Dairy Name?
Why hide behind marketing claims that are somewhat ambiguous and rather disingenuous?
I think we all know the answer to that . . .
Anyway, I’m just saying . . .
Say What???
What say you???
Aah . . . that’s CHEESY
Non dairy cheese is anything but natural. It ticks me off how companies continue to get away with misleading labels. Half the time I don’t know what I’m eating…
🥴
I hear ya, sister . . . and I cheer ya!
Nutritional yeast is often used to mimic the flavor of cheese for vegans. But it should be listed on the ingredient list as an ingredient with its actual non-dairy name.
Needless to say, I won’t be buying Skinny Pop White Cheddar flavor popcorn again.
I tend to buy “whole foods” that are not processed . . . but even then you don’t know if you are getting GMO products, or products with pesticide residue, or e-coli. It’s a crap shoot.
Come to think of it, e-coli results from a “crap shoot.” 😀
Now that’s disappointing … I love them too. 🤨
I normally pop popcorn at home so I can control the salt and oil. I bought this bag to take for snacks to our weekly Bridge game. If I do it again, I will buy the ORIGINAL Skinny Pop with just 3 ingredients:
Corn, oil, salt.
Black pepper Skinny Pop is my jam. There are always several bags in the cupboard. I sure hope they aren’t using non-dairy black pepper in there.
You’re probably safe on that score, Mark.
But compare the marketing claims with the ingredient list to see what else they might be sneaking in past unsuspecting consumers.
I’m not familiar with Skinny Pop White Cheddar Popcorn but their ‘cheese’ sounds about like the ‘cheese’ in Kraft Mac & Cheese… which is anything but cheese. Sneaky, sneaky.
Yup. That’s just it, Ally Bean. It’s a bit of a bait and switch . . . and (honestly), I like the original 3-ingred. Skinny Pop better.
Hold the “Natural Non-Dairy Cheddar Flavor.”
As long as it tastes good….
I’m going back to popping my own with Orville Redenbacher popcorn. It tastes “cleaner.”
Ah, the bait and switch of food marketing. Buying things to drink and eat is probably the first line of defense one should observe when it comes to “buyer beware” but we can never be sure of what we’re being told…or what has been left unspoken. We deserve greater regulation and transparency when it comes to the food chain, and maybe future generations will be better suited to get that done than ours has. Maybe.
Most of the time I remember to scan the ingredients list BEFORE purchasing. This time I bought something I thought fellow Bridge players would enjoy, which they did.
It was while finishing the bag at home, that I noticed that the label was not quite as “transparent” as I had imagined. 😀
I haven’t eaten popcorn in years. I like it, but you can only eat so many things, and we have so many options.
It’s hard to avoid all the non-food food, but we do our best.
Your discernment will stand you in good stead, Nicki. We have SO MANY options . . . that often less is more.
Choosing wisely (as we decide what to put on our plates and in our mouths) pays dividends in improved health.
Oh man! I really like Skinny Pop! But I didn’t think about the “natural” nondairy ingredient.
In the future, I will buy the ORIGINAL Skinny Pop with just 3 ingredients:
Corn, oil, salt.
Aah . . . that’s better!
