We Took A Trip March 20, 2022

Most of the time, I’m happy to be HERE at home.

Whatever wanderlust I experienced as a youth has fled the scene, departed the premises, vacated my psyche.

But, even homebodies like us enjoy the occasional quick trip as a pleasant interlude to our daily routines.

So we took a short (two day) road trip to the East Coast of Florida.

Although our original plans included driving as far north as St. Augustine, we never made it due to heavy rain, threatened tornados, and our incredibly flexible itinerary.

No matter:

“A good traveler has no set plans and is not intent on arriving.” ~ Lao Tzu

We’ll see St. Augustine some other time.

Aah . . . that’s better!

When was your last road trip? Have you traveled much since Covid arrived on the scene?  Do you prefer loose itineraries or plans that are “set in stone”?

I have spent in the Time of Covid most of my time at home. A short trip sounds wonderful even with high gas prices. Look at all the gallons we saved in isolation for over 2 years.

nrhatch - March 20, 2022

That is so true! We did consume a few gallons on this trip, but our hotel stay included a FREE night! So that paid for the gas and most of our meals.

I’ll post more about the trip in the coming days . . . maybe I’ll inspire you to take a quick trip to enjoy a change of scenery.

Haven’t been anywhere in over two years. I keep thinking it may be a beach year.

nrhatch - March 20, 2022

I hope that you will make it to the beach in the not too distant future. I’ll be posting a few beach shots in the coming days.

Now that I have finally retired, a trip to the shops is an outing!!!

nrhatch - March 20, 2022

That’s the ticket, Granny! And CONGRATS on your retirement ~ a well earned break!!!

granny1947 - March 20, 2022

Hi Nancy. I would have loved to continue working but the travelling to and from work was getting too much.

nrhatch - March 20, 2022

Hope you can find some suitable “endeavors” to enjoy closer to home!

We’ve only been day tripping since Covid. I sure do miss traveling…

nrhatch - March 20, 2022

We took a 2-night trip last fall (to Tallahassee) and this 1-night trip to the East Coast. Other than that, just day trips for us too.

Hopefully, you’ll be “on the road again” soon!

Sounds like a refreshing change of scenery! As you know, I’m heading to Scotland tomorrow. There are plenty of plans but also time for excursions to old and new places!

nrhatch - March 20, 2022

EXCELLENT! I hope that you have a blast from first to last, Val. Enjoy the party and all the other moments too!

6. L. Marie - March 20, 2022

I have not been on a road trip in ages! So glad you had a good time.

nrhatch - March 20, 2022

It feels a bit surreal to be “on the road” after so many months sticking close to the neighborhood.

When we went to Tallahassee last October (for 2 nights), we did NOT like the hotel, the hotel employees, or the breakfast. In contrast, this hotel (same chain) sparkled, the employees were super FRIENDLY and breakfast was delicious! So all good again.

Hope you get to “hit the road” for a day trip or overnighter soon.

7. Behind the Story - March 20, 2022

I love your images! For a road trip, a loose itinerary is good. There are always surprises along the way.

I’m not so interested anymore in long trips to far-off lands. Weekend trips are just right.

nrhatch - March 20, 2022

Thanks, Nicki! My favorite part of posting is selecting images that work with my words.

And same here ~> far off lands are not a big draw for us, not when there are so many fun places to explore close to home (easier to get to, everybody speaks our language, the food is familiar, and fewer travel hassles!) For us, that’s a Big Win!

Hope some pleasant surprises pop up around the corner for you!

Ready for a road trip! Great that you could have one and have fun despite changed plans. Flexible is a wonderful way to be. 🙂

nrhatch - March 21, 2022

When I do our “itineraries” now, I create a loose list of things to do and places to see in the general vicinity, knowing that we will not be able to cross them all off the list. That way, we don’t run out of ideas and end up sitting around twiddling our thumbs . . . but we don’t feel compelled to GO, GO, GO. It makes for a relaxing trip.

I’m the same with movies and books ~ I’ll never get to them all, so I don’t stress about which ones to read or watch. Good enough is good enough. But the converse is true ~> if I start a movie or book and it feels like a waste of my time, I set it aside and turn to another. Life is too short to read bad books. 😀

Hope you can hit the road soon, Carolyn! Even a day trip can be a nice change of pace and scenery.

joyroses13 - March 21, 2022

Great way to do an itinerary. And yes, I am starting to be the same about not finishing bad books. I will give them a fair chance for some books are just slow in the beginning and then pick up. But I won’t make myself finish something just for the sake of finishing! I have way too many other books I want to read. 🙂

Thanks Nancy! My husband and I did go out for the day to visit covered bridges about 2 weeks ago. Forgot about it. It was lovely weather and yes, felt good to get out!

nrhatch - March 21, 2022

I love covered bridges. My dad grew up in Vermont so they make me quite nostalgic.

Before abandoning a book, I often check reviews to see if readers felt that the time investment was worth it, because you’re right about books sometimes ending better than they began.

9. Ally Bean - March 21, 2022

I feel the same way about travel now. Used to love it, now I contemplate it more than pursue it. Your first photo is tranquil and enticing, though.

nrhatch - March 21, 2022

That first photo is the view from our deck when the lake was populated by white pelicans.

Psychological studies have shown that we are happier PLANNING trips than we are TAKING trips. So I plan trips all the time (like visiting St. Augustine) that never actually materialize. And I’m OK (and HAPPY) about that!

The same cannot be said about meals, however ~ planning a menu is NOT nearly as much fun as EATING! 😀

10. Debra - March 21, 2022

I’m glad that I’m a good homebody, too, Nancy. My friends who love to travel have had much more difficulty during Covid than we have. Every 3 months or so we go north to Oakland, about 6 hours, to see our grandson and his parents. Three or four days and we are happy to head home, even if we miss the kids!
