After our aborted first attempt, we fit in a visit to the Bishop Museum to see Giants, Dragons, & Unicorns (The World of Mythic Creatures).

The exhibit features unique cultural objects (art, jewelry, masks, puppets) which highlight the similarities and differences in the ways people around the globe envision and depict mythic creatures.

As we wandered through the exhibit, we learned about Sea Monsters, Griffins, Unicorns, and Dragons . . . oh, my!

Giants, Dragons, & Unicorns (The World of Mythic Creatures) shared theories and research highlighting how misidentification, speculation, fear, and imagination spawned the creation of a myriad of mythic creatures.

I don’t know about you, but I don’t want to meet this guy in a dark alley . . . even if he has misplaced his dentures!

While at the museum, we also visited the Mosaic Backyard Universe where kids can run, jump, climb, and blast off into space in a cardboard rocket!

But first . . . here’s a Unicorn for Tippy Gnu:

Aah . . . that’s better!

What a fun exhibit!

Our favorite thing about the Bishop museum is the Planetarium followed closely by the traveling exhibits. They get some good ones.

2. Jill Weatherholt - November 5, 2019

How fun! Thanks for sharing, Nancy.

They even had a “Build-A-Dragon” video game which gave us a chance to choose the legs, head, body, tail of our very own mythic creature.

What a fun place to visit, Nancy. Someone should find a set of dentures for that toothless guy. 😅

nrhatch - November 5, 2019

Exactly!

4. joyroses13 - November 5, 2019

Cool on the dragons and of course the unicorn! 🙂
Yes, that toothless guy looked scary!

nrhatch - November 5, 2019

Yup. A toothless Tiger is still a Tiger.

joyroses13 - November 5, 2019

And I am not anxious to meet a tiger face to face!

nrhatch - November 6, 2019

I’ll admire them from a distance.

5. Ally Bean - November 5, 2019

Cool beans. Nothing better than a museum with mythical creatures and scary stories. I do love me some dragons, I gotta say.

nrhatch - November 5, 2019

We saw videos and photos of real “sea monsters” ~ giant squids and LONG oarfish (the length of a school bus!).

6. Kate Crimmins - November 5, 2019

You and your BFF are really kids at heart! Looks like fun.

nrhatch - November 5, 2019

Thanks, Kate. Being a kid is more fun than being an adult . . . except (maybe) at Happy Hour. 😉

Kate Crimmins - November 5, 2019

Then you can claim big girl status!

nrhatch - November 6, 2019

Good plan!

7. Tippy Gnu - November 5, 2019

I love the unicorn. But what’s it doing in a museum for “mythic” creatures?

nrhatch - November 5, 2019

I think it ambled in and got moonstruck by the dragons!

8. http://theenglishprofessoratlarge.com - November 5, 2019

Fascinating figures. Love them all.

nrhatch - November 5, 2019

The artwork was fabulous . . . especially of the dragons and mermaids.

9. L. Marie - November 5, 2019

That museum was made for me!!!! 🥰🥰 Thank you for the photos, Nancy!

nrhatch - November 6, 2019

There are dinosaurs in the lobby and saber-toothed tigers in the museum proper.

10. Debra - November 6, 2019

I think this must have been quite interesting, Nancy. Quite unusual, I’d say! Mythic creatures of all kinds are fascinating to me. I’m glad your second attempt to attend was a success! 🙂

nrhatch - November 6, 2019

The similarities and differences around the world are fascinating ~> but an ancient rhino as a unicorn . . . I’m NOT buying it! 🙄

11. Behind the Story - November 6, 2019

Dragons may be frightening, but, oh! don’t they make fabulous subjects for art?!

nrhatch - November 6, 2019

The dragons were probably my favorite part of the exhibit ~ so much more photogenic than sea monsters! 😯
