Carrot Dogs

For the carrot dogs:

6 medium-large carrots (hot dog bun length), peeled
3 tablespoons low-sodium soy sauce or tamari
3 tablespoons apple cider vinegar
2 tablespoons pure maple syrup
2 tablespoons olive oil
2 cloves garlic, minced
1 teaspoon smoked paprika

For serving:

6 hot dog buns
Pushcart Onions

Bring a large pot of water to a boil. Add the carrots and cook for 7 to 8 minutes, until just fork tender. Drain and rinse with cold water.

In a small bowl, combine the soy sauce, vinegar, maple syrup, olive oil, garlic and smoked paprika. Transfer mixture & carrots to a sealable gallon-sized plastic bag. Mix to coat, then marinate in the refrigerator overnight (or up to 24 hours), keeping the carrots in a single layer.

Heat a grill pan over medium high heat for several minutes. Place the carrots on the hot grill, after shaking off excess marinade.  Cook for 5 to 6 minutes, rotating the carrots once or twice. Remove to a plate.  Garnish & Serve.

Each year for his birthday, BFF receives a Gift Certificate from the Landry Select Club.  This year, as soon as the temps tempered a bit, we headed to the Chart House on Longboat Key to enjoy Happy Hour on the deck.

Perfect temps.

Delicious food.

Cold drinks.

We recently helped our niece celebrate her 23rd birthday.

We got her the perfect “sleep” shirt . . . for when she is NOT asleep.

Her dad ordered her a delicious four-tiered chocolate cake.

Aah . . . that’s a TALL order!

Strolling On Pine Avenue November 21, 2019

Last week, when we went to the Farmer’s Market on Pine Avenue, we parked at the far end of the street and strolled the length.

We enjoyed the signage outside the Pineapple Junktion Co-op.

We had to STOP to check out the Waffle Bar (with made to order waffles ~ a/k/a “sugar delivery devices”).

After visiting the market, we checked out AMI’s pier which is being rebuilt after being damaged during Hurricane Irma two years ago.  It’s getting there but it’ll be a few more months before we can walk the planks.

Since it was a gorgeous day, we continued our walk up Bay Boulevard to enjoy the views.

On the return trip, we stopped in the Olive Oil Outpost to get some fresh-from-the-oven baked bread.

Just outside, this rusty truck with a cargo of “empties” caught my eye.

Aah . . . what a trusty rusty recycling bin!

One of the most generous bloggers I follow bestowed us with a box:

And inside the box was a cooler:

With a warning:

Since we didn’t have gloves, we used a spoon to dig around in the dry ice:

To unearth a pint of Ben & Jerry’s Caramel Almond Brittle:

Thanks, L. Marie!

And, yes, we used slightly smaller spoons to shovel the B&J’s into our mouths.

Aah . . . that’s yummy!

How about a traveling pizza oven?

What is the easiest way to make a banana split?

Cut it in half.

When will the trail mix have enough money to buy a map?

When the banana chips in.

Why did they cancel the ice cream social?

The banana split with the ice cream.

What kinds of jokes do bananas like to tell?

Side-splitting ones.

What kind of a key opens a banana?

A monkey!

Excitement At Our Local Publix! July 30, 2019

Yesterday, BFF and I headed to Publix (“where shopping is a pleasure”) to get groceries.

On arrival, we noted throngs of people milling about the perimeter of the parking lot.  The parking lot proper had been cordoned off with yellow crime scene tape.  Ambulances, Police Cars, and Fire Trucks populated the almost empty lot as officials scurried about with walkie-talkies.

“Hey, BFF.  It looks like there’s been a bomb threat.”

“You think?”

“I do.  Why else would they cordon off the entire parking lot?”

As BFF continued to drive toward the scene, we saw a van emblazoned with “Bomb Squad” on the side, confirming our suspicions.

At the perimeter of the scene, we asked a police officer for a quick recounting.

All he would say is that a “suspicious package” had been found near the entrance to Publix and that they had evacuated all the stores in the shopping center.  He thought the stores would be reopening “soon.”

We decided not to stick around.  Instead, we headed to the Island Publix to stock up on essentials.

This morning as we were walking up to the pool, BFF saw this headline in the Bradenton Herald paper sitting in our neighbor’s driveway:

Suspicious Package outside Bradenton Publix turns out to be a Water Bottle

Curiosity satisfied, we continued to the pool where we found an empty water bottle leaning up against the pool shed.

We did NOT call the bomb squad since the empty bottle was not adorned with wires or otherwise connected to an incendiary device.

Aah . . . that’s better!

Don’t Be Jerky! June 27, 2019

We spent very little time in the town of Helen, other than quaffing beers to quench our thirst at creekside taverns while tubers floated past.

We did check out this unique storage facility with tubes stacked floor to ceiling beside life jackets and leashes.

Back on the Main Street, we saw some Jerky signs.

Imagine having to choose between Deer, Elk, Buffalo, and Boar.  Hmmm . . .

Or Goat, Gator, Python, and Alpaca.

Decisions.  Decisions.

I know!  ~> Make mine pretzels & beer!

Aah . . . that’s better!
