A few quotes to switch on the light, illuminate the recesses, and reframe our perspective:

* It isn’t what you have, or who you are, or where you are, or what you are doing that makes you happy or unhappy.  It is what you think about. ~ Dale Carnegie

* The reason people find it so hard to be happy is that they always see the past  better than it was, the present worse than it is, and the future less resolved than it will be. ~ Marcel Pagnol

* The best and most beautiful things in the world cannot be seen or even touched. They must be felt with the heart. ~ Helen Keller

One last parting thought:

May we stay resolved to each breath,
each act, each moment being enjoyed,
and may thanks be given,
regardless of the setbacks.

~ Jim O’Connor (Issue 13, HERON DANCE)

Here’s to enjoying the journey as each moment unfolds into the next.

Aah . . . that’s better!

I’m totally with you here Nancy, excellent choice of quotations. 🙂

nrhatch - January 9, 2022

Thanks, Sally. Glad you had a nice day reminiscing yesterday.

I do my best to focus on the good, which I seem to find in the most unexpected places. Manifesting potatoes…?

nrhatch - January 9, 2022

There is always something to be happy about. There is always something to be unhappy about. We get to choose the channel.

Enjoy manifesting those tatties.

A lovely amalgam of inspiration Nancy 💕

nrhatch - January 10, 2022

Thanks, Val. A positive boost for the week keeps me upbeat.

Great post! Always have loved Helen Keller’s quote. What an inspiration she was!

nrhatch - January 10, 2022

Glad it resonates, JR. She was indeed.

5. Behind the Story - January 9, 2022

Thank you for the lovely quotes, Nancy. And may we give thanks in all things.

nrhatch - January 10, 2022

Yes! An Attitude of Gratitude pays dividends to us right here, right now.

BTW: Last night, NATURE (on PBS) featured volcanoes including Marum on Vanuatu! They didn’t show much of the island because they also visited Mt. Etna and Hawaii and Africa, but you might recognize a few scenes as they helicoptered up to the Lava Lake.

The Marum volcano is one of the jewels of the pacific, and is not only one of the most active volcanoes of Vanuatu but also the world.

6. Kate Crimmins - January 10, 2022

As I recently learned (yet again), every day has some good in it. It may not be the good you want but it’s still good. It’s best to focus on that rather than all the things that went wrong.

nrhatch - January 10, 2022

Agreed. It’s easy to let our mind focus on problems to be solved or worries and frets or regrets and guilty meanderings. Especially if we leave it on auto-pilot. It pays to reclaim the remote.

We don’t wish to laugh AT the sorrows of others but we don’t need to let their sorrow subsume us either. And we need not feel guilty about being happy with small delights we encounter ~ that first sip of coffee, that first bite of croissant, the laughter of a child.

The purr of a happy cat…

nrhatch - January 10, 2022

Yes! Listening to purring cats is a great way to reduce blood pressure.

7. L. Marie - January 11, 2022

Great quotes! And how many of us have heard someone talk about the good old days of high school? (Not so great for me, to be honest, which is why I avoid reunions.)

nrhatch - January 11, 2022

Thanks, LM. I’ve never been to a HS reunion. I have returned to William & Mary for homecoming a time or two because I LOVE being in Williamsburg for the “good eats” and historical ambiance. The College Reunion crowd is only a peripheral part of the draw for me.

I do tend to be nostalgic about people, places, and things, so that quote reminds me to focus on TODAY, like Winnie the Pooh:

Pooh: What day is it?
Piglet: Today.
Pooh: Oh, good. Today is always my favorite day.

The future holds promise. But like vapor and steam, it’s impossible to grasp until it condenses.

Today. Today is where it’s at.
Drink it in. Soak it up. Be Here Now.

8. Debra - January 11, 2022

So important to hold onto these words, Nancy! Thank you! It’s a challenge sometimes to stay with the positive messaging when everything comes at us from the other side. But I’m more tuned into the fact that I have some control over that at least. Not much else, but what I listen to, yes! 🙂

nrhatch - January 11, 2022

Glad it resonated, Debra. I do need periodic reminders to look on the bright side (especially after watching the news, listening to political debates, checking in on global climate change).

Rather than allowing ourselves to be tangled up in the negatives, we can shine a spotlight on the positives and SMILE!.

9. Endless Weekend - January 18, 2022

Thank you for sharing these inspiring words. They remind me of Eleanor Roosevelt’s “The future belongs to those who believe in the beauty of their dreams.”

nrhatch - January 18, 2022

Thanks, EW. Eleanor Roosevelt shared some good thoughts with us ~> here’s to moving in the direction of our dreams!
