Eww . . . What Is That SMELL???!!! August 24, 2021

Posted by nrhatch in Home & Garden, Humor, Less IS More, Nature.

After a dip in the cool pool for water aerobics this morning, we biked back home, parked our bikes in the garage, and started to walk through the courtyard to the front door.

And that’s when we got a *whiff* of something.

Something foul.

Or perhaps fowl.

But definitely deceased, demised, a done deal.

We lifted leaves and peered through branches.

And noted nothing.

We combed the courtyard from top to bottom without finding any rotting carcasses.

Nevertheless, our olfactory senses, still objecting to the odor, encouraged us to continue looking.

High.  Low.  Up. Down.

Nothing.  Nada.  Zilch.

No source of the substandard stench could be found . . . until BFF (who is taller than me by a good 12 inches) looked up on the roof of the garage and spied . . .

A dead fish sizzling in the stalwart summer sun.

Given its last landing pad, it must have been a flying fish.

BFF hauled out the ladder and headed up to the roof armed with AJAX, rubber gloves, trash bags, and twist ties.

Once the deceased fish had been dealt with, disposed of, and dispatched, BFF hosed off the roof and returned to the cool comfort of the A/C.

Aah . . . that’s better!

Dead fish on the roof? Florida is indeed a strange place!

nrhatch - August 24, 2021

There are lots of eagles and osprey around that occasionally
“lose their lunch.”

The same thing used to happen when we lived next to the Chesapeake Bay. We would find the “odd fish” in the middle of the front lawn at times.

Rivergirl - August 24, 2021

We have bald eagles and Osprey as well, but none have ever delivered sushi.

nrhatch - August 24, 2021

Maybe our fish are more feisty!

2. joyroses13 - August 24, 2021

Oh my! Never would have guessed that! Glad you found it! Helps to be tall. LOL!

nrhatch - August 24, 2021

I’m glad BFF was tall enough to peer over the eaves and spot the smelly thing . . . and ever happier that he’s still ready, willing, and able to climb ladders to dispose of displaced fish. 😛

joyroses13 - August 24, 2021

He is a keeper! 🙂

nrhatch - August 24, 2021

The real deal!

3. Ally Bean - August 24, 2021

I’m glad you found the source of your stench. Kind of trippy to think of a fish on the roof.

nrhatch - August 24, 2021

I know, right? We canceled our plans to have tuna fish for lunch.

4. Kate Crimmins - August 24, 2021

Once in a while we’d find a fish outside our pond. Since they don’t chose that we always went with a predator theory. Glad you found it. It would have driven you crazy!

nrhatch - August 24, 2021

I guess Mother Nature would have disposed of the detritus eventually . . . but in the meantime, P U!

And you’re right, it might well have driven us batty!

5. Val Boyko - August 24, 2021

What an unexpected advebture! You will know for next time 🤣💛😆

nrhatch - August 24, 2021

If we’re lucky . . . there will be no more SUSHI on the roof. 😛

6. Sarah Davis - August 24, 2021

Wow! Yuck – Glad the fish was found.

nrhatch - August 24, 2021

Me too! Let’s play GO FISH!

You left us with a puzzle, but I see from earlier comments that you have a good hypothesis for how it got on your roof. Every day needs a little excitement.

nrhatch - August 25, 2021

For a fun tie in with our flying fish, we watched a couple of episodes of Murdoch Mysteries last night. One involved ~> cozying up with a dead fish. 😉

8. L. Marie - August 25, 2021

Wow. That is really weird. Must have been one disappointed bird who lost his/her dinner.

nrhatch - August 25, 2021

Likely an osprey. Fish can be slippery.

9. Debra - August 25, 2021

Now that’s a surprise! LOL! Not a good one, but a surprise. 🙂 BFF to the rescue.

nrhatch - August 25, 2021

I’m glad he was here to “save the day”!

10. Erica/Erika - August 27, 2021

Can you imagine a dead fish on the roof? I guess so, Nancy, since it happened to you and BFF. Surprisingly, I have heard of similar situations…..birds carrying too much in their beaks……I have those moments sometimes with pizza….🙂

nrhatch - August 27, 2021

It’s quite the “fish tale” isn’t it . . . about the one that got away and landed *SPLAT* on our roof.
