Escape Hatch July 11, 2021

Last Spring, just as Covid was shutting things down, we ordered lumber for a new deck, which BFF constructed with due care.
Because our deck is set back from the lagoon, we have a rocky coastline beneath us.
In case of fire, I decided I didn’t want to have to climb over the railing before dropping to the jagged rocks below.
So I asked BFF to build me an Escape Hatch . . . for emergency evacuations.
With one upward pull, an opening in the railing wide enough to squeeze through appears.
Allowing anyone in residence to SIT on the deck and drop GENTLY to the rocks below.
Aah . . . that’s better!

Good thinking!
And good construction. BFF does good work!
Good timing too. In our area it’s almost impossible to get decking material.
It was PERFECT timing around here too ~ first the price of 2×4’s skyrocketed . . . and then prices went out of sight.
A wonderful, professional looking and useful, deck, Nancy. Especially with the magical gate. Kudos to your BFF. 🙂
BFF did a great job replacing the deck (which was closing in on 30 years of age). These photos have been sitting behind the scenes for ages due to my lack of enthusiasm for the Block Editor. Now that I know how to access Classic Editor, they are . . .
FREE AT LAST!
Hooray! Lovely looking deck and very clever safety hatch. 🙂
Thanks, Sally! I’ll pass along your compliments to Chef BFF!
That is gorgeous, Nancy!!! BFF should hire himself out. Well done!
I’ll pass along your compliment, LM.
BFF used to work as an independent contractor for “small” jobs ~ decks, basement redos, bathrooms, etc. He also worked as a warranty representative for a couple of home builders way back when. It’s his forte!
Nifty! Love your deck view.
We get lots of bird action out there ~ ducks, osprey, spoonbills, herons, egrets, ibis, osprey, geese. It’s better than looking at people. 😀
Thant is wonderful!! Happy for you.
Oh, my goodness! Your BFF is skillful. What a good job he did! And you had a good idea.
Thanks x 2, Nicki. BFF & I make a good team!
That’s cool. What a wise woman you are to think of this and to be associated with someone who could build it for you. Very nice
Thanks, Ally! Some people around us put in stairs but the configuration wouldn’t work well for us. We considered options and BFF came up with this sleek, streamlined design. Hope we NEVER have to use it.
Now that is ingenious! Wonderful solution to a potential problem and peace of mind now! Hope it’s never needed, which we say about almost all insurance policies. 🙂 I’m sure the deck has been a wonderful addition to your relaxation opportunities!
Exactly right, Debra. We’re hoping we never need to use it, but knowing it’s there is wonderful.
We use the deck the most from October to March. In the summer months, we use it sparingly, in the morning, while we still have plenty of SHADE on that side of the villa. We got new deck furniture last November and loved relaxing out there with a book!
That’s a very nifty idea, Nancy. Hope you never have to use it. 🙂
We watched a DVD last night called Primal Fear, by the HISTORY channel. It talked about fears like Snakes, Being Buried Alive, Rats . . . and included a segment on FIRE!
It’s good to have an escape hatch!
Well that sounds like very good ‘before bedtime’ viewing. 😯
We joked that we’d be visited by nightmares all night . . . but we slept the sleep “of the dead.” Bwahahaha!
That’s absolutely brilliant! Your guy should patent that. What a beautiful place to sit and rest, renovate.
He’s handy to have around, Pam ~ he studied architectural design and drafting so he had lots of great ideas!
During the Florida fall, winter, and spring, the deck is a terrific adjunct to the villa. In the summer, it’s a relatively useless appendage except for early morning and late at night. We do sometimes go out at night to admire the sky.
A three-season deck – that’s superb, as is admiring the sky any time of the year.
And the little anole lizards love it always! 😀
How smart of you and great job to your BFF!
I had the idea . . . but credit for the design (spectacular!) and the work to build it goes to BFF.
He used it last week when he was on the back deck cleaning furniture. He needed something from the garage and didn’t want to traipse through the house so he used the Escape Hatch. It worked like a charm!
😊
