Tea For Three January 11, 2019

On New Year’s Eve, we invited a friend over for “Afternoon Tea” (a euphemism for over-indulging on baked goods and sweet treats).

I managed to put together an assortment of pastries from a number of high caloric offerings that had infiltrated our kitchen over the holidays ~> Cherry Squares, Stollen, Brownies, Grandma’s Coffee Cake, Macademia Nut Toffee.

Not wanting anyone to O.D. on sugar, I also put out some raw veggies with garlic herb dip, chips, fresh tomato salsa, and black olives.  (Not exactly a balanced meal, but not quite so lopsided as it looked at first blush.)

The good news:  we managed to make it through the holidays without succumbing to a sugar coma . . . or turning into roly-poly snowmen!

Aah . . . that’s better!

Definitely yum!

nrhatch - January 11, 2019

There’s a reason “yummy” rhymes with “tummy.”

Looks like a nice spread! Is that your house, Nancy? That stone work is beautiful.

nrhatch - January 11, 2019

That stone wall and snowman is in Hogsmeade ~ part of the wizarding world of Harry Potter. I love the stone work too.

Jill Weatherholt - January 11, 2019

I didn’t think that looked like a typical Floridian home. 🙂

nrhatch - January 11, 2019

It reminds me of the 100+ year old stone farmhouses in Bucks County PA . . .

And speaking of Pennsylvania ~> Go Eagles! 😀

Yummy and Oh is that Odessa I see by the snowman! 🙂

nrhatch - January 11, 2019

It could be Odessa! Just resting/roosting after delivering an uber important message to Dumbledore.

joyroses13 - January 11, 2019

🙂 You can depend on Odessa to deliver important messages, well unless she is in a sassy mood. LOL!

Are you familiar with Archimedes? The owl in Disney’s The Sword in the Stone? He was Merlin’s right-hand “man” in getting King Arthur ready for the thrown.

Oh, my point? Archimedes had sass to spare when he deigned to speak.

My guess is that after the tea, there were some veggies left over, but no cookies. 🙂 Great idea, but then, I’ve never turned down an Afternoon Tea invitation. One of the best things the Brits invented. xo

nrhatch - January 11, 2019

Actually, just the opposite. We polished off the veggies and only made a slight dent in the sweets ~ which meant that BFF got to eat them later. He didn’t mind. 😀

Afternoon Tea is a stellar invention.

roughwighting - January 11, 2019

That’s a surprise – you know now how it would go in my family. ;-0

nrhatch - January 11, 2019

We might have reached a different result if the tea had been BEFORE Christmas, rather than AFTER ~ as TG noted below, he’s getting sick of sweets.

I also expect that the ratio would have shifted if we had invited a few tiny tots and munchkins OR hungry teens! 😛

Gorgeous snowman and I love the owl. I’ll go for the non sweet delicacies. 😆

nrhatch - January 11, 2019

We saw the snowman and owl on our most recent visit to Universal. The witch’s hat seemed a good fit for him.

I did the same, Sylvia. I put them out at the last moment, but they were a hit with Betty and me . . . which left more sweets for BFF.

6. Kate Crimmins - January 11, 2019

If that your snowman? I’d be happy with your spread!

nrhatch - January 11, 2019

In Maryland, we invited neighbors to Afternoon Tea on New Year’s Day . . . with fresh out of the oven scones as the counterpoint! It’s a very relaxing way to entertain.

That dapper snowman is in Hogsmeade in the Wizarding World of Harry Potter.

Kate Crimmins - January 12, 2019

That was very sensible. I used to invited people in for a pork and sauerkraut dinner (good luck in the Germanic tribes) which was a whole lotta work. Scones and (could I have coffee instead of tea?) would be wonderful.

nrhatch - January 12, 2019

I always offered Coffee & Tea . . . and even had some spirits on the table for people to add if so inclined.

7. Tippy Gnu - January 11, 2019

Looks good, but I’m getting sick of sweets. It’s one more reason why I’m glad the holidays are over.

nrhatch - January 11, 2019

I feel the same, TG. Too much, even of a “good thing” is not good ~ it’s the law of diminishing marginal utility. We keep most baked goods in the freezer so that we can enjoy them “over time” and “one at a time” instead of “all at once.”

8. William D'Andrea - January 11, 2019

For the very first time, that you and I have been on-line friends, I truly wish that we were within less than an hour’s driving time of each other. I truly would have enjoyed those snacks. That is if you’d have invited me.

nrhatch - January 11, 2019

Your invitation must have gotten lost in the mail . . . along with L. Marie’s! Glad the spread appealed.

Hope you have lots of “good eats” in 2019!

9. L. Marie - January 11, 2019

My invitation must have gotten lost in the mail. Surely with those baked goods I was invited! 😁

nrhatch - January 11, 2019

Absolutely! It either got lost in the mail OR . . . Hello Kitty hid it behind that enormous cupcake she’s carrying around.

10. Debra - January 12, 2019

Good for you, Nancy! You took steps to eliminate the damage, and although I succumbed to quite a few temptations, I made what I call the “better of bad choices” and then put a stop to it all as soon as the holidays were over. I do really well with the sweets, but it’s the homemade Chex Mix that I can eat like a vacuum cleaner. 🙂

nrhatch - January 13, 2019

Yes . . . Chex Mix is addictive!

Instead of making the “real deal,” I sprinkle 1/2 c. Chex (Rice or Corn) into a small bowl and sprinkle some salted peanuts, cashews, on almonds on top. It’s a more “measured” serving with less oil, less salt, and less temptation to inhale an entire batch.

Debra - January 14, 2019

This sounds like a great alternative! Thanks!

nrhatch - January 15, 2019

Less butter, less salt, less fuss, less muss. I might not serve it at a party, but it’s great to munch on while watching a movie.
