Bag The Broccoli! January 5, 2019

Posted by nrhatch in Food & Drink, Health & Wellness, Humor.
trackback

Last month, I had to visit the Urgent Care clinic
While there, I received a band-aid
Opened and administered by the nurse
After she gave me a shot

*OW*

Full of steroids
To help eradicate the itchy, scratchy rash
That developed as a result of an allergic reaction
To OTC pain medications
Taken for lower back pain
That I incurred two days earlier

*POP*

*OW*

While moving a bag of broccoli (!)
In the freezer

Moral of the Story: Β Vegetables are healthy to eat, but moving them around is fraught with peril!

And (per BFF) we should all bag the broccoli!

Aah . . . that’s better!

I feel for you! Sending love and quick healing through the ether. xx πŸ™‚

nrhatch - January 5, 2019

Thanks, Sally. I’m all better now . . .

The back pain only lasted 1-2 days. The rash lasted a solid week. And the dopey/spacey/disorienting effect of the Benadryl, Steroid Shot, and Prednisone (administered to counteract the unexpected allergic reaction to Aleve or Advil) lingered well into a 2nd week.

But I was fit as a fiddle by Christmas!

mybeautfulthings - January 5, 2019

I’m very glad to hear that you yourself again! πŸ™‚

nrhatch - January 5, 2019

Me too! I definitely did NOT feel like myself with a swollen face and cotton candy for brains!

Being ME again was a great Christmas Present!

2. Jill Weatherholt - January 5, 2019

Oh no! I’ve had two back surgeries, so I feel your pain, Nancy. Now you have me thinking if broccoli was the culprit! I hope you’re feeling better soon!

nrhatch - January 5, 2019

I don’t blame the broccoli . . . but BFF is NOT a fan and would like to evict it from the premises.

Permanently. πŸ˜›

3. Rainee - January 5, 2019

Hope you are feeling better now Nancy. I did something similar with a word processing manual once. Good to read but not to carry!

nrhatch - January 5, 2019

Thanks, Rainee. I have thrown my back out of whack a few times over the past 20+ years ~> and it is generally NOT from digging ditches or carrying 100 pound gunnysacks.

Instead, I bend over to pick up a piece of lint and can’t stand up straight for a day or so. Usually ice and ibuprofen are all that is needed to set things to right. But I will have to be cautious about OTC meds, especially NSAIDS (nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs), in the future.

I may be relegated to following Tippy’s advice (see comment #6)

4. Val Boyko - January 5, 2019

Ouch! Please don’t take it out on the broccoli πŸ₯¦
I hope it has eased and you are limber and pain free again πŸ’›

nrhatch - January 5, 2019

I am right as rain, Val. Thanks!

The episode reminded me of how connected everything is . . . and how tenuous. One mishap can cause a cascading spiral.

5. joyroses13 - January 5, 2019

Ouch for sure! Back pain is no fun! “Bad broccoli!” Hope you heal up fast and did the nurse give you a band aid with Snoopy or some other fun character on it at least?? πŸ™‚

nrhatch - January 5, 2019

You know, she didn’t! I should have requested one . . . πŸ˜†

My back is fine, the rash is gone, and the spaciness from all the drugs has dissipated. I’ve never had an allergic reaction to anything before so this was a bit of an eye opener. 😯

joyroses13 - January 5, 2019

Yes you should have. πŸ™‚
Glad your back is fine now and rash is gone! That is great that you never had an allergic reaction before. There are so many meds I can’t take because of allergic reactions. The doctors shake their heads in frustration over me. LOL!

nrhatch - January 5, 2019

Doctors shake their heads in frustration with me too . . . but for different reasons. πŸ˜†

I hope you never need a med that you can’t handle.

6. Tippy Gnu - January 5, 2019

Instead of taking OTC meds, maybe you would have been better off putting that frozen bag of broccoli on your back. Get well soon.

nrhatch - January 5, 2019

That may be what I have to do in the future, TG.

I don’t know whether it was the Aleve or the Advil (or the combination) that caused the rash but I will have to be wary with any NSAID until I figure that out.

7. Kate Crimmins - January 5, 2019

How big was that bag? Broccoli should only be eaten in very small amounts! Hope you feel better.

nrhatch - January 5, 2019

Thanks, Kate. Maybe we’ll just eat FRESH broccoli in the future, never frozen. πŸ˜€

8. granny1947 - January 5, 2019

Oh Dear…backache is the pits.
Did not know you had such vicious broccoli in your land!

nrhatch - January 5, 2019

As it turns out, the cure was worse than the disease. The backache only lasted a day or so. In contrast, the allergic reaction to the OTC meds caused my face to swell to twice its normal size with puffy swollen eyes that were no more than slits and cheeks that extended into the next room.

And the water retention caused me to gain 5 pounds over night. I was fit to burst! Bad broccoli! πŸ˜›

granny1947 - January 6, 2019

Good grief. At least now you know what it would feel like to be Chinese!

nrhatch - January 6, 2019

Or perhaps an Oompa Loompa! 😯

9. L. Marie - January 5, 2019

Yikes!!!! Who knew that a bag of broccoli could cause such trauma.

I hope you’re in the pain-free zone now.

nrhatch - January 6, 2019

I’m right as rain!
I’m fit as a fiddle!

I’m running out of similes ~> but not smiles! πŸ˜€

10. Joanne Sisco - January 6, 2019

omg – that’s the first time I’ve heard of a broccoli injury!

In the current environment of overreacting to everything, I’m surprised there hasn’t been a widespread broccoli alert issued πŸ˜‰

Glad to hear you are feeling better. I’m guessing the swollen face thing wasn’t a good look for you πŸ™‚

nrhatch - January 6, 2019

Yes! We should issue a RECALL of ALL broccoli since it obviously cannot be trusted!

I looked (and felt) like a bizarre alien version of myself for about a week. I will be far more cautious of OTC meds in the future ~ especially NSAIDs.

11. Debra - January 7, 2019

You just never know what a day will bring! Just moving a bag of vegetables started quite a negative chain reaction. I’m glad you’re doing fine now, Nancy. Go easy on those bags of veggies! πŸ™‚

nrhatch - January 7, 2019

We are all hanging on by a very thin thread . . . as this tiny blue dot hurls through space.
