Don’t Drink And . . . Diet October 13, 2018

Last week, we enjoyed Happy Hour at the Chart House.

The menu now includes the calorie count for each of the well-priced appetizers.  Wow!  No wonder two or three appetizers washed down with a couple of drinks has always left us too full for dinner.

One of the appetizers we’ve never ordered ~ fish tacos ~ has more than 1,100 calories.  Yowsa!

Doing our best to ignore the calorie counts, we forged ahead and foraged on Spinach Artichoke Dip and assorted Cheese and Crackers.

Life is short:  Don’t Drink And . . . Diet!

Aah . . . that’s better!

I never knew fish tacos could be considered an appetizer. Agreed, you can’t diet during happy hour…think TGI Fridays. I always loved the Chart House…we used to go to one in Alexandria, Virginia. Happy Saturday, Nancy!

Morning, Jill. Since we don’t eat out often, I don’t worry much about calorie counts or nutrition when we do.

That said, some of the calorie counts for appetizers were S~T~E~E~P ~> more than I would usually consume at a meal. Possibly more than I would eat on Thanksgiving! It’s no wonder Americans are becoming chubby rabbits! 😯

Yes! Too many restaurants are a bit heavy handed with the salt shaker. Way too salty for me.

Like Jill, we used to have a lovely Chart House here, but it disappeared. I’m not keen on those calorie counts on menus. I think they’re visual clutter so I don’t even look at them. Of course, I rarely eat out so when I do I eat what I want.

Same here, Ally. Eating out happens 2-3 times a month, not every day. So we have ample opportunity to counter-balance the diet busters with more nutritious fare when we cook for ourselves.

But now I don’t feel as virtuous about claiming that we split 2 appetizers and were too full for dinner! 😆

My first experience with calories on a menu was sobering (no alcohol was involved!). I was in the city with our attorney for a hearing. We stopped for lunch at the Rain Forest Cafe. The salads were well over 1,000 calories! Yikes! I ordered something at a modest 700. It was a burger with fries. Whodda thought that?

I’ve seen calorie counts for menu items that seem counter intuitive. And you’ve given a perfect example. Salads with cheese and nuts and heavy dressings can really pack on the calories when we aren’t looking! 🙄

Seems like you can get two days worth of eating from one meal, at a typical restaurant. I’d prefer lower menu prices and less calories.

No complaint about the prices at Happy Hour here ~ e.g., $4 for hummus and plantain chips, $5 for bang bang shrimp, $6 for sliders, $7 for cheese and crackers. And there are about 7 other choices in the same range. Drink prices are also good.

Now I know how we get filled up for less than $25. 😆

We found that almost everywhere we ate on our recent road trip – and like Tippy Gnu, were very surprised to find salads so high on the calorie count! We often had half our meal boxed up and ate it for lunch the next day because the portions were so very big! 🙂

If we want the same thing, we often split an entree and round it out with a side or two. If we want different things, we aren’t shy about asking for a “doggie bag” so we can take the excess home. Neither of us wants to feel like a stuffed baked potato after eating out. 😛

i wish there was a Chart House in our vicinity. I often find that an appetizer is as good as a meal. Hubby and I also often split a starter and an entree. Most portions here in the USA are far too big.

There’s a Chart House in Melbourne (and Daytona and Jacksonville), but I don’t know of any closer to Miami. We visited the one in Melbourne last December. We like “ours” better.

Next time you and hubby are on the Gulf Coast, let’s meet at the Chart House on Longboat Key. Deal?

For several years now we’ve had to “endure” the calorie count on all menu items in California. Even McDonald’s and all fast food or convenience stores, as well as high end restaurants, although that may just be high end chain restaurants. I have become so accustomed to seeing those numbers that I don’t always notice them anymore, But I must admit it has deterred many a choice! Most of the time I now try to order and eat about half, and perhaps bring the rest home. It’s very hard for me to tune out that information. I haven’t been to a Chart House in quite a while, but we have them here, too. We did eat out yesterday and I also had fish tacos. 🙂 If you can find anything on a menu for 1,100 calories you’re doing well! LOL!

I like having the calorie counts there when I’m interested in being “in the know.” But I found on our last visit that it’s harder to be happy at Happy Hour if you’re counting calories. 😆

Chart House is our favorite drinking spot ~ the setting is great, right on the inter-coastal. And when the weather is good, we can sit outside on a deck overlooking the dolphins. Bliss!

Smiling …. I am so with you on this Nancy! Two weeks in Italy and several dinners out really bring it home. I’m not complaining … but I can’t afford – or want- a new wardrobe in the next size up!

I am guessing that fish tacos can be made with far fewer calories.

Taco shells are only 80 calories. Fish has few calories. Guess they managed to push the calorie envelope high with fried fish, tartar sauce, cheese, etc.

That gives me an idea ~> lobster tacos! Lobster doesn’t need anything but a drizzle of butter and a squirt of lemon juice.

Really? Darn! And I always feel so virtuous when I order fish tacos. Maybe the fish is fried at the Chart House. I think I’d prefer to not read the calories when I go out to eat. My guy and I usually share an entrée anyway, so in that way, I cut the calories in half. 🙂

I’ve never had a fish taco . . . but I have had Bang Bang Shrimp Tacos at Bonefish Grill. I expect that the calorie count would be “equally impressive.” 😯

If I ate out more often, the calorie counts might keep things in check (and keep me from overdoing it). Splitting an entree is our norm too. “Less is more.”
