Art Ovation Hotel October 3, 2018

We attended an art reception at the Art Ovation Hotel in Sarasota.
First, we got a signature lemon lavender cocktail:
Then we got some nibbles:
While we imbibed, we listened to music:
And perused the art:
Before checking out Dragonfly Cafe:
Where middle schoolers (wearing lavender and raspberry berets) were using ancient typewriters to craft impromptu poems for passers-by:
But the biggest delight
Of our visit to Dragonfly Cafe that night?
Not a single smart phone in sight.
Aah . . . that’s better!

Now that is my kind of café! Love the old typewriter, Nancy.
It’s a fun way to get kids to play with words . . . instead of their phones!
Sounds wonderful!
Very pleasant evening. The hotel is new and features “cultural” events most nights of the week . . . including art and music lessons for guests staying at the hotel. Pretty cool.
That’s unbelievable!
I saw one or two guests scrolling through their phones, but the kids were too busy typing poems “the old fashioned way” to bother with electronic devices.
Sounds like a great place!! I love Sarasota. Went there a lot to visit relatives when I was younger. Fond memories.
Sarasota is a great little city ~ with lots of fun stuff to do. Fond memories are the BEST!
I love that they were using old typewriters. I have a niece who became enamoured with a typewriter she found at a flea market. After she managed to find a new ribbon for it (!!) she started sending me letters by mail. It was wonderful … until the novelty of it eventually wore off after a few months 🙂
There is a simple elegance to typewriters . . . as long as you never mis-type!
Yeah – like that’s ever happened 😉
Of course not!
Those old typewriters bring back memories. Not so much of using them, but of the clickety-clack of the keys as you typed. Your evening of cocktails and poetry sounds fun.
I remember going from a manual typewriter to an electric . . . to a self-correcting ribbon . . . to a memory typewriter . . . to a word processor . . . to a computer.
Each step along the way ~> WOW!
Lovely, Nancy. Poems crafted on an old typewriter sound wonderful. 😍
The kids had fun creating mini masterpieces from three words pulled from a jar by the patrons. Ours needed to have one of the words defined ~ dulcet.
I immediately thought: “The dulcet tones of the dulcimer . . . “
Very good, Nancy. A very sweet instrument.
Speaking of instruments . . . have you been playing your piano since returning from your extended travels?
How lovely! But do tell, that lemon lavender cocktail sounds wonderful!
Like a refreshing lemonade with floral overtones.
And . . . potent! 😀
Sounds like my kind of drink!
Cheers!
You had me at lemon lavender cocktail! The rest was icing on the cake. What a great night. I LOVE Sarasota. xo
It’s a pretty cool little city! And it was a cool cocktail . . .
I relaxed just reading about this lovely outing, Nancy! No smart phones! Incredible! What a special day!
I loved watching them write poems “the old fashioned way.”
Sounds like a great day! That cafe looks very inviting.
Some of the art reminds me of the old TV test patterns. 😀
Yes! TV test patterns ~> slightly wavy and out of focus.
How I love that! Thanks for sharing Nancy. Its good to be back and reconnect❣️
Good to have you back!
I love those smartphone free zones, but they are getting more rare by day.
Smartphones are ubiquitous. It’s nice when people put them down long enough to connect face to face.
