Jill’s recent post, Childhood Summers, highlighted the simple pleasures of summertime . . . when the living is easy.

After sharing some stellar examples of summertime fun, Jill concluded her post by asking:

What’s your favorite summertime memory?

Summertime has always been my favorite time of year.  So I had no problem coming up with a few favorite summertime memories:

Jumping through the sprinkler.
Picnics at Deer Lake.
Mystery Rides with my grandparents.
Kennebunkport Maine & the Jersey Shore.
Camping at Panther Lake.
Cookouts on the patio.
Fresh tomatoes from the garden.

Reading To Kill A Mockingbird. 😀

Before my mind turned to other things, it tossed out a few more thoughts:

Outdoor band concerts on the Navasink River.
Italian Ice
Fireworks on July 4th.
Countryside Swim & Tennis Club.
Frozen Milky Way bars.
Good Humor truck ~> make mine Toasted Almond.
Home made, fresh churned vanilla ice cream . . . with toppings!
Fresh corn from farm stands.

Once the waterfall got started, it wouldn’t stop:

Riding bikes
Hopscotch
Jumprope
Dodge ball
Camping out in the backyard
Pogo sticks
Pulling weeds
Mowing the lawn
Watching thunderstorms

Jill’s post really got me thinking!

And isn’t that what blogging is all about?

Tossing the frisbee
Playing badminton
Croquet
Mother May I?
Simon Says

Aah . . . that’s better!

LOL! I loved this, Nancy! Derek and I really enjoyed reading all of your summertime memories. I loved Mother May I! And those chairs, too! 🙂 I’m glad I got you thinking.

I loved your post . . . Summertime rocks!

Jill Weatherholt - September 25, 2018

I’m so happy you enjoyed it, Nancy. I had fun writing it and reading everyone’s responses. Thanks for sharing!

Thank you!

Mmmm…. toasted almond Good Humor. The best! They used to sell them in a box in the grocery store for a while but now all I can find is chocolate eclair. Boo!
And badminton. The only sport I ever excelled at!

nrhatch - September 25, 2018

We played badminton all summer long . . . without ever bothering to learn the rules. 😀

Bonus: we could heard the approach of the Good Humor man while smacking that birdie around.

rivergirl1211 - September 25, 2018

There are rules to badminton…? Huh.
😄

¯\_(ツ)_/¯

You forgot fireflies! And being allowed out after dark because everyone was still outside!

nrhatch - September 25, 2018

Good ones, Kate! Being light longer at night was also a delight, even if it meant waiting longer to chase fireflies!

My favorite childhood memory of Summer?
I didn’t have to go to school for two months!

nrhatch - September 25, 2018

Yes! So cool to be out of school . . .

I loved school and learning and the school library but not as much as snow days, holidays, spring break, and . . . summer break!

5. Tippy Gnu - September 25, 2018

Just being out of school was good enough for me. Until I started getting summer jobs.

nrhatch - September 25, 2018

I stuck with babysitting as a summer job as long as possible ~ I enjoyed being an “independent contractor” so that I could hang out during the day and “work” (a.k.a. watch TV) at night.

Summer was a time for living outdoors. We rarely spent time in the house and my days usually involved water at some point since we lived a short distance from a lake. Ahhh – good memories 🙂

nrhatch - September 27, 2018

Yes! We headed out the door at first light, went in to forage for a lite bite at noon, and shot back outside until night fall.

7. L. Marie - September 26, 2018

Yay!!! I love the fact that though the season has changed, it’s still summer. 😀

nrhatch - September 27, 2018

Me too! The heat and humidity is beginning to lighten a bit, but the days are still warm and the nights are not yet cool.

8. Debra - September 27, 2018

I love your list of happy summer memories. Many on your list are among my favorite memories, too. I love the summer months even though they’re often harsh, but I think the pleasures of childhood summers even subconsciously affect me still. 🙂

nrhatch - September 29, 2018

I agree, Debra.

Here in Florida, summer is NOT my FAVORITE season . . . but I still love the light at night . . . and bike riding . . . and beach combing . . . and taking a dip in the pool.
