The Funeral July 28, 2018

Joe passed away. His Will provided $30,000 for an elaborate funeral.
As the last guests departed the affair, his wife, Betty, turned to her oldest friend.
“Well, I’m sure Joe would be pleased,” she said.
“I’m sure you’re right,” replied Jody, who then lowered her voice and leaned in close to whisper. “How much did this really cost?”
“All of it,” said Betty. “Thirty thousand.”
“No!” Jody exclaimed. “I mean, it was very nice, but $30,000?”
“The funeral was $6,500. I donated $500 to the church. The wake, food, and drinks were another $500. And the rest went for the memorial stone.”
Jody computed quickly.
“$22,500 for a memorial stone? My God, how big is it?!”
‘”Two and a half carats.”

A Margarita Bouquet! July 25, 2018
Posted by nrhatch in Food & Drink, Life Balance, Nature.21 comments
Last week, I received a unique and colorful bouquet ~ a huge strawberry margarita (complete with two straws which, due to environmental concerns, are now banned in 31.7 states):
Once the profusion of pink blooms faded, I donated the enormous margarita glass (together with its squishy pink “marbles”) to Goodwill for “repurposing.”
Reduce. Reuse. Recycle. Repurpose. Resale.

The Worst Kind Of Souvenir July 21, 2018

On summer vacations, picking up a bug is the WORST kind of souvenir to bring home.
My advice?
Stick to postcards!

Space July 19, 2018

As we navigate through our days, our senses focus on things and our minds on thoughts.
But we can switch our focus from things to the space between things.
Anywhere there are two or more things, we can begin to note the space between them ~ between sights, between sounds, between clouds, and between passing thoughts.
Once you find the space, peer into it and see what emerges.

“Never make predictions. Especially about the future.” ~ Casey Stengel
Stress is often a product of overactive imaginations overflowing with “what ifs?”
Instead of driving past our headlights, we can choose to rein in our thoughts and BE HERE NOW.
In the moment.
Instead of living so many years ahead of each day.

The Devil’s Ticket & Mississippi Mud July 11, 2018

A few months ago, I read a book about a fatal hand of Bridge . . . based on a true story of a wife who shot her husband while playing Bridge one night ~> The Devil’s Ticket: A Vengeful Wife, A Fatal Hand, and a New American Age.
On a related note, I thought some of you might get a kick out of this famous trick hand from the days of cardsharps on the Mississippi riverboats:
North
Spades -10 5 4 3 2
Hearts –
Diamonds – 5 4 3 2
Clubs – 5 4 3 2
West East
Spades – Spades J 9 8 7 6
Hearts – 8 7 6 5 4 3 2 Hearts –
Diamonds – A K Q J 10 9 Diamonds – 8 7 6
Clubs – Clubs – 10 9 8 7 6
South
Spades – A K Q
Hearts – A K Q J 10 9
Diamonds –
Clubs – A K Q 3
A Diamond lead from West to Dummy/ North holds South to six tricks at a 4H contract.
A 4S bid only makes 3 tricks.
While 5C bid mades 4 tricks.
How would South make out in No Trump?
Bridge hands can be as deceiving as Mississippi Mud.
And some are even fatal!
Maybe I should stick with dominoes.
