A Tree With A Split Personality August 12, 2017

We bumped into this tree near the Governor’s Palace in Colonial Williamsburg.

It’s got a split person-ality to it.

I wonder whether its caricaturish carvings inspired Disney to create the Tree of Life at Animal Kingdom?

I see definite similarities . . .

Aah . . . that’s better!

That’s an incredible looking tree. At first glance, I saw faces. It reminded me of HR Pufnstuf!

nrhatch - August 12, 2017

Yes! Faces and animals and shapes. And what a resilient tree ~ still alive and verdant even after being split in two.

Were they carved into it or did it grow that way?

nrhatch - August 12, 2017

It looked like Mother Nature’s artwork, Kate.

Amazing! It looks like a mystical tree…

nrhatch - August 12, 2017

It does!

Wow!

nrhatch - August 12, 2017

That’s what we said!

5. Tippy Gnu - August 12, 2017

That’s the most beautiful ugly tree I’ve ever seen.

nrhatch - August 12, 2017

Well said, TG!

I’ve seen many unusual trees with gnarled trunks and fascinating aberrations, but I am confident this is the most unusual! It’s really fascinating. It’s amazing that it is still living, as to me, it looks vulnerable. What fun!

nrhatch - August 12, 2017

I agree ~ unusual, fascinating, wizened . . . and vulnerable.

Hmmm… That one would have given me nightmares if I had seen it when I was young. The neighborhood kids used to talk about a tree with a black hand that was in our back yard.

And then there were the talking trees in Wizard of Oz and one that slapped Dorothy’s hand when she went to pick an apple… or was that Alice In Wonderland…?

nrhatch - August 13, 2017

This could be a nightmare inducing tree . . . especially if seen on a moonless night by candlelight. BOO!

And I do think it was Dorothy’s hand that got smacked. Alice was too busy taking drugs and talking to Hookah Smoking Caterpillars.

JOriginal Muse - August 14, 2017

LOL… Right 😆

Oh my word!!! That’s so bizarre looking! I’m glad you were able to capture photos of it.

nrhatch - August 13, 2017

We’re glad we bumped into it . . . judging from its appearance, something else bumped into it first!

That tree is really making a statement, Nancy! Great pics 😀

nrhatch - August 14, 2017

Ah, the twisted tales that tree could tell . . . if only it could talk!

Love this, I can see all sorts of personalities in it, how cool..

nrhatch - August 15, 2017

A tree with character . . . and characters . . . aplenty!

Anne Lene @ MinimalistSometimes - August 18, 2017

🙂 you do have a way with words, Nancy. You stated it exactly they way I would…if I had just found the words 😉

nrhatch - August 18, 2017

Thanks, Anne. I love playing with words . . . especially in the interactive comment section!
