Happy Birthday to my Ordinary Guru

Life often conspires to teach us what we need to know.

Some lessons seem negative because our vantage point is limited.

We are lost in the trees.

Once we move farther along the path, we see more of the forest.  Our changed vantage point provides clarity.

With expanded cognition, we find that the “negative events” we resisted resulted in valuable lessons and navigational aids:

* Perhaps we learned to be patient and allow life to unfold.

* Or we shifted our perspective from malignant thoughts of certain doom to benign thoughts of light and laughter.

* Maybe we gained proficiency with a valuable life skill, such as living in the midst of uncertainty without gravitating to worst case scenarios, wild imaginings, and dire predictions.

Anything, even the grin of an Ordinary Guru, can be a nudge in the right direction.

A shortcut to becoming who were were always meant to be.

Aah . . . that’s better!

Plus, it’s more work to be upset and miserable.

nrhatch - October 23, 2014

And, yet, some folks master the art or working themselves up into a frazzled lather over every real or imagined slight.

ericjbaker - October 23, 2014

I see you’ve worked in an office as well.

😉

Yes! The Water Cooler is surrounded by Drama Queens! :/

Life often conspires to teach us what we need to know.-We are led to places, people, and experiences we might not have chosen to encounter. Even though we might not get the lesson at the time, or perhaps not in this lifetime, rest assured there was a purpose in it.

nrhatch - October 23, 2014

Our encounters and experiences create a grand tapestry with no loose threads (and only a few frayed edges). 😎

I always prefer a nudge rather than the board up to the side of my head lessons. Then again, there are days when I shout to the heavens, “whatever is trying to kill me; I’m strong enough, thanks!”

nrhatch - October 23, 2014

Haha! I’ve cried out “UNCLE” a few times too . . . or a personal favorite: “ENOUGH!”

4. Crowing Crone - October 23, 2014

” living in the midst of uncertainty without gravitating to worst case scenarios, wild imaginings, and dire predictions.” That one, yes!

nrhatch - October 23, 2014

I do my best to imagine BEST CASE SCENARIOS.

Whether I’m right or wrong about what’s coming around the corner, I’m calmer in the interim.

Crowing Crone - October 23, 2014

you are a wise soul

Karen J - October 25, 2014

Love this: Best Case Scenarios!
thank you, Nancy…

nrhatch - October 25, 2014

My pleasure!

Some of the benefits of growing old. 🙂

nrhatch - October 23, 2014

Yes! We get closer to living OUR life!

6. NancyTex - October 23, 2014

May we all have those ordinary gurus in our lives (and become them for others). Sounds like yours is celebrating a birthday today. Happy Birthday!

nrhatch - October 23, 2014

Thanks, NT! He is celebrating a birthday today ~ and it’s been a good one. Gorgeous weather too.

7. granny1947 - October 23, 2014

You always make such sense!!!

nrhatch - October 23, 2014

Thanks, Kathy! That’s a comment worth hearing.

8. meridethcohrs - October 23, 2014

I LOVE the concept of an ‘ordinary guru’ – wonderful perspective ❤

nrhatch - October 23, 2014

We have “teachers” all around us . . . and lessons to learn every day. Step One: Be OPEN. Step Two: LISTEN.

9. thecontentedcrafter - October 23, 2014

So true! One of the things about living a greater number of years is that the view is higher and longer and you can begin to see the way through the forest. Another thing I was absolutely amazed to realise was that it is never me who comes up with the answer to a problem.. It is always someone else who says something to me that lights up the darkness, points a way forward or asks a question that wakes me up……… Turns out I’m surrounded by a mass of Enlightened Buddhas! Who knew!!??

nrhatch - October 23, 2014

With me, it’s sometimes a person who lights the way. Other times, it’s a book that lands in my lap . . . or a pertinent quote . . . or even nature that expands my KEN.

But behind it all, I see Spirit Lighting The Way.

10. Grannymar - October 23, 2014

A grin from an Ordinary Guru, can be worth more than gold dust.

nrhatch - October 23, 2014

Yes! They’re like a bit of unexpected Leprechaun Luck!

11. diannegray - October 23, 2014

Sometimes the most difficult road can lead to a beautiful destination. I’ve traveled some of those roads, Nancy and it’s not until you see where you end up that you can look back and think ‘wow, the universe really wanted me here regardless of the painful journey!’ 😉

nrhatch - October 23, 2014

Exactly! So many things that seemed “bad” at the time turned out to be “wonderful” shortcuts to where we needed to be.

12. Val Boyko - October 24, 2014

Life is our teacher. No conspiring required. We are all students.
And when we realize this we realize that we are never lost.
Thanks Nancy for this post today. 🙂

“Conspire” comes from the French => to breathe together. Life conspires to teach us what we need to know by bringing the bits & pieces together . . . by orchestrating things . . . by planned synchronicities.

And, if we’re hard-headed, it hammers the point home.

13. Kathy @ SMART Living 365.com - October 24, 2014

I like to live by the saying, “Use everything for your enlightenment.” At least that is what I strive for….

nrhatch - October 24, 2014

Yes! When we LISTEN, anything in life can be our guide.

14. Three Well Beings - October 25, 2014

You have a wonderful outlook on life, and I think you have certainly used all of your experiences, the good and the truly difficult, as guides all along the way. I really see how they have accumulated and your resilience is a huge asset in life!

nrhatch - October 25, 2014

Thanks, Debra. As I move through my days, I still see ample room for improvement . . . BUT I also see how far I’ve come from the impatient, door-slamming, Drama Queen role I perfected in High School.

As a result of life lessons offered through the years, I am calmer, more peaceful, and much happier than I was in my teens.

15. Rajagopal - October 27, 2014

Nancy, at the basic level, we are part of the action-reaction chain; our action in one moment setting off a reward or a punitive reaction in the next, enabling the way forward, either as an encouraging nod or a corrective measure. as pointed in your post, the key is to mindfully observe the signs, learn and refine as you progress…best wishes…raj

nrhatch - October 27, 2014

Thanks, Raj. Mindful awareness allows us to learn lessons at the “gentle nudge” stage. Much better than the “rough shove” or “smacked upside the head with a 2×4” stage.
