Although I’ve mentioned Mint Juleps in a number of posts, I’ve never shared the recipe ~ a fact I discovered when I offered to share it with Kate Shrewsday after her recent visit to Charleston.

Mint Julep

1 jigger (more or less) Simple Syrup with Mint
1 jigger bourbon
crushed ice

Fill a tall glass or silver julep cup with crushed ice.  Add a jigger of Simple Syrup and a jigger of bourbon.  Stir.  Ice will melt and meld with the drink.

Garnish with 2-4 large sprigs of fresh mint.  Sip, don’t gulp.

Simple Syrup

Pour 1/2 cup boiling water over 1/2 cup sugar; stir until sugar dissolves.  Stir in 1/4 cup lightly packed fresh mint leaves (or, in a pinch, 1/4 c. dried mint).

Chill at least 4 hours.  Strain. Store covered in the fridge.  Makes about 3/4 cup ~ enough for 3-6 Mint Juleps.

Aah . . . that’s better!

I have the porch. You have the mint juleps. Y’all come see me, hear?

Sounds like a plan, Barbara. I can’t imagine a more perfect setting for sipping juleps than at Rosedon. And if we tire of the porch, we can visit the little porker outside your potting shed.

Silver in the Barn - September 23, 2014

Exactly!!! A stellar plan if I ever heard one.

nrhatch - September 23, 2014

Yay! I had my first Mint Julep in Williamsburg . . . within a few days of arriving at William and Mary. Each time we visit the Colonial Capital, we enjoy sipping one with sippets at the Kings Arm.

2. Becky - September 23, 2014

Crushed ice is key.

nrhatch - September 23, 2014

Yes! The crushed ice allows the drink to meld.

3. Jill Weatherholt - September 23, 2014

I’ll bet it’s good, but I’ll have to stick with Peppermint Patties. Jill and liquor don’t mix well. 🙂

nrhatch - September 23, 2014

Liquor is quicker . . . but candy is dandy. 😀

Jill Weatherholt - September 23, 2014

Ha ha! Wine is fine. 🙂

nrhatch - September 23, 2014

Well, then, have a fine wine time.

I’ve never had a “real” mint julep. When my sister and I were young we used to make what we thought were mint juleps and sit on the porch pretending to be southern belles. Our version was simply adding crushed fresh mint to sweet ice tea. I think I like this version much better.

I can see you and Dirt Man enjoying one while watching the fall foliage falling.

Happy Autumnal Equinox!

5. Pix Under the Oaks - September 23, 2014

Never had a mint julep or a mimosa!

nrhatch - September 23, 2014

Given the choice of the two, I’d take a mint julep.

6. Kathy @ SMART Living 365.com - September 23, 2014

I went to a Kentucky Derby party where they served these and then afterwards played poker. Thank goodness there was a table limit 🙂

nrhatch - September 23, 2014

Haha! Juleps are a heady concoction. 😎

7. brickhousechick - September 23, 2014

Sweet yumminess!

nrhatch - September 23, 2014

Well said, Maria!

Judging by the camera shake – lack of crisp focus – I suspect that these may be a little strong for me 😉 Jokes aside, I guess I should give this a try sometime (next summer maybe).

nrhatch - September 23, 2014

Haha! The tell tale shake. I’ve enjoyed Mint Juleps in the Fall in Williamsburg, but they are perfect for a sunny summer day.

9. diannegray - September 23, 2014

I’ve got the mint, bourbon, crushed ice and sugar and in this heat I’ll be gulping 😉

nrhatch - September 23, 2014

Start with sips . . . once the ice melts, gulp away. 😛

diannegray - September 23, 2014

Ice cream headache 😉

nrhatch - September 23, 2014

There’s a reason for restraint. 😉

10. L. Marie - September 23, 2014

I feel like I need a seersucker suit and a bamboo chair to sit in and sip this drink.

nrhatch - September 23, 2014

Yes! That is the required attire. A straw hat helps too.

11. Crowing Crone - September 25, 2014

Sounds like a delightful drink, minus the original hoop skirts, for a hot sunny afternoon.

nrhatch - September 25, 2014

Hi Joss! am so glad that current fashions don’t require hoops, corsets, and layers and layers of fabric . . . especially on hot sunny afternoons. 😎

12. Three Well Beings - September 26, 2014

Oh yeah! Maybe over the weekend…a nice refreshment while sitting on the patio. 🙂

nrhatch - September 26, 2014

Enjoy! Friday = Time for Rest, Relaxation, and Refreshment.

13. beeblu - September 28, 2014

Looks very refreshing. I’m into iced pomegranate tea at the moment, now that it’s warming up here. Delicious and zero calories! 🙂

nrhatch - September 29, 2014

And you won’t get sloshed! 😉
