Chasing Ice is a fascinating look, via time lapse photography, at the rate glaciers are melting in Iceland, Greenland, Alaska, and Montana.
Some of the footage is beyond beautiful, especially the nightscapes that capture the juxtaposition of Earth, Air, Sky, and Water.
Those that deny that climate change is happening may change their tune after watching this film.
One Shell Oil Executive did.
He jumped over the chasm from denying climate change to working for solutions.
It’s not about saving the planet. The planet will survive.
It’s about whether we’ll be here to witness it.

One of the glaciers he filmed has receded farther in the past 10 years than it had in the previous 100.
And still the debate continues. It makes me wonder about the actual agenda of the naysayers (e.g., Rush Limbaugh). Why deny climate change when it’s an observable phenomenon?

Some of the things they did to capture images were wicked scary, Carol. After seeing the “calving” process of glaciers, I wouldn’t volunteer to stand on the edge of the precipice.
Mom and dad just got back from an Alaskan un-cruise and saw a massive glacier crack – the pictures they brought back were insane!
Hope your mom and dad enjoyed their Alaskan “un-cruise.” My parents went a few years ago and captured some BIG images.
Speaking of un-cruising, I’ve seen videos of kayaks in Alaska. Tiny boats dwarfed by massive ice sheets. I don’t believe I’d want to be in an itty bitty boat when a glacier “calved” next to me.
If an iceberg could sink the Titanic, imagine how it could swamp a canoe.

I loved this documentary ~ gorgeous images combined with a compelling and telling message. Glad I added it to my Netflix queue.
Beautiful but so deeply disturbing. And then there are still those who deny climate change.

We ARE an arrogant lot, Don. Some more than others. I find it astounding how vehement people can be when denying reality.
It remains to be seen whether our arrogance will be our downfall or our salvation ~> perhaps we’ll pull our feet from the fire in time. In the meantime, make sure your disaster insurance is paid up.

These days, we can’t turn on the Weather Channel without hearing about another Climate Change Disaster ~ today, a tornado in Boston, wildfires in Northern California, and serious drought throughout the southwest.
Each time we plug a hole in the dyke, a new leak springs up.
I need to come back to see the video later this afternoon.. I have two to catch up on. Such a busy summer this year.. !
You and CH might enjoy watching Chasing Ice ~ the film is about 75 minutes long with some excellent commentary and jaw dropping scenery.
This makes me so sad. What makes me really angry though is those who continue to argue that there is no such thing as climate change – that it’s all left-wing bunk.
You’re right, NH, the planet will survive; it’s the human race that’s in jeopardy.
When I hear Rush Limbaugh (and others of like ilk) spouting off, I wish I could ask if they worked hard to get so stupid. 😎

Spectacular & scary all at the same time. I know our glens were formed by glaciers so I guess it is the turn for other countries to emerge. Our generations and some of those before us, have not helped to save the glorious world around us.
We’ve had an increasingly negative impact on the world for the past century ever since we started chugging along faster and faster with our technology ~ trains, planes, and automobiles.
Not to mention cows farting on factory farms. MOO!
Clean energy IS available. When the dopes in D.C. start backing solar, wind, and geothermal power instead of being buddy buddy with Big Oil, we will start to see change here and elsewhere.
Your last sentences sum it up well. The planet will survive (along with cockroaches) with or without us. It’d be nice if we change our ways before it’s too late.
When I read “cockroaches” . . . I pictured Rush Limbaugh. 😆
Here’s hoping we change our tune before the balance of power tips in the cockroaches favor.

Stunningly beautiful! And fantastically frightening. When we took an Alaskan cruise a few years ago, we saw that duality: gorgeous ice burgs and crumbling glaciers.
Do people in Florida who own land worry about losing the state to high water?

I would love to see this documentary, Nancy. Not that I need convincing! I just know I’d really appreciate the message and the beauty of the glaciers. I purchased a book a year or so ago of the glaciers in the California Sierra Nevada mountains. I didn’t even know about them until recently and they’re melting! It was heartbreaking to me. I will definitely follow up with this documentary. You’ve steered me towards a number of excellent ones in the past! 🙂
This documentary is right up your alley, Debra. The scenery is breathtaking ~ canyons of ice as far as the eye can see. The message is disturbing ~ man’s most monumental achievements may be his undoing.
Men of vision like this just take my breath away: someone who had the concept to record glaciers as they changes – it is an amazing thing to do. I must watch the whole thing!
It is an amazing piece of work, even if the glaciers hadn’t budged one inch in the 3 year span of filming. As it happened, most glaciers retreated and deflated miles and miles under the camera’s watchful eye. 😯

~ What I would give for a single peek at 100 hundred years hence. To see if we turned the tide before it swamped us.

I wasn’t jealous of the 2 guys camped out at the edge of the glacier for 3 weeks . . . waiting for it to calf. It looked FRIGID.

We just watched Aerial America ~ Montana. Currently populated with 25 glaciers, Glacier National Park is expected to have NO glaciers remaining when 2020 arrives in 6 short years.
I googled some info and articles on the retreating glaciers and I thought, wow! That is quite dramatic. Then I read some comments and it is unbelievable! I think there must be people that just spend their days trying to find as many articles and blogposts as they can to comment on to try and refute the global warming facts by calling it a theory. It is as if they are trying to dispute the claim that after day, comes night.
Exactly! Some people would seem far smarter if they kept their unsupported opinions to themselves. 😛
