Wow! What A Weekend! November 12, 2013

Posted by nrhatch in Art & Photography, Food & Drink, Humor, Music & Dance.

We had tons of fun in the sun this weekend.  Here’s how the fun unfolded:

IMGP0887bOn Wednesday, we received a late breaking invitation to a birthday dinner for our 16-going-on-17 niece, Samantha.

Driving across state to join the revelry and merriment at Seasons 52 in Orlando, we heard Stevie sing “On The Edge of Seventeen.”

Perfect timing!

And then “a little ditty about Jack and Diane” which reminded us to “hang on to 16 as long as you can.”

Oops . . . too late!

We arrived early and surprised Sam by jumping out of the bushes in front of the restaurant, swords drawn.  Like pirates!

We didn’t fool her.  She knew it was us.

Dinner included Flatbread Pizza, Greek Salad, a Dynamic Duo of Hummus, and Sweet Indulgences for Dessert.

Our waiter snapped this photo as we struggled to maintain composure (while fighting a losing battle with a sugar high).

Sam's Birthday

Tigger managed in our absence, greeting us with a HUNGRY yowl and a hairball.  On the carpet.

On Thursday, after a grueling day of doing “nothing much” (bike ride, water aerobics, grocery shopping), we attended an Open House at the South Florida Museum to launch the new equipment in its Planetarium . . . stellar!

The capabilities are absolutely amazing!  We zoomed in to Earth and flew over Anna Maria Island and our neighborhood. We rode through the canyons on Mars. We went out past the edge of the solar system, the Milky Way, to the edge of the known Universe.

To date, only 25 planetariums in the world have these capabilities ~ much like the Universe, that number is ever expanding.

Tigger greeted us with a contented purr and a wee accident.  On the tile.

On Friday, at the annual Arts Hop, we wandered through five of the island’s fourteen galleries listening to local musicians, sipping wine, admiring the art, and nibbling on  . . . nope, not spongecake.

We noshed on imported cheese and crackers and sampled coconut shrimp with mango salsa at Sidebar, the newest gallery.

We filled cocktail plates with bruschetta, pizza, and fresh pineapple at The Studio at Gulf and Pine.

We tried Japanese Ice Cream “Bubbles” at the Shiny Fish Emporium ~ a first for us.  Mochi ice cream is a small dessert ball with rice cake (mochi) on the outside and an ice cream filling on the inside.  We tried the White Chocolate Raspberry first.  Followed in quick succession with a Chocolate chaser.

We ended our strolling repast with mini pumpkin spice cupcakes and cookies at ArtSpace.

Fun night.  And filling.  Filling and fun.

We went home and collapsed on the sofa to watch The Bourne Legacy and rest up for the rest of the weekend’s scheduled events.  Tigger joined us.

On Saturday, we stopped by the AMI Butterfly Garden Arts & Crafts Show on the island to hang out with Patchouli.  Just the right mix of sun and clouds to keep the temperatures temperate.

Did you catch the chorus?  “I don’t know how to stay, but I don’t know where we’re going.  Hold on ’cause anything is possible.”

Ring any bells?

After getting our fill of Julie and Bruce’s melodies, we swung by The Fresh Market for Taste of the Holidays, with samples of whipped potatoes, sweet potato souffle, corn souffle, stuffing, cranberry orange relish, green beans, cheese straws, pecan pie, and coffee a l’orange.

Also offered but not sampled by us ~ oven roasted turkey, spiral baked ham, pumpkin pie, sweet potato pie, red velvet cake.

After grabbing a few bakery items (Toscano Pano and Cheddar Rolls), we popped down to Coquina Beach for the tail end of Symphony on the Sand, arriving in time to hear the 1812 Overture.  While there, we burned off a few calories with a moonlit stroll along the Gulf, accompanied by night breezes.

After a light dinner at home, we headed inland to hear Sophie B. Hawkins  perform at the Tarpon Pointe Grill and Tiki Bar.

Sophie B. headlined the Pussycat Festival, to raise $’s for the Gulf Shore Animal League, singing songs from Tongues & Tails and Whaler . . . plus a few songs by her alter ego, Janis Joplin.

After enjoying her music for 20 years, it was great to kick back and watch Sophie perform live . . . from the comfort of our car.  We arrived late to the festival, expecting to park blocks away from the venue.  Instead, we pulled into a parking spot a stone’s throw from the stage with an unobstructed view.

What a treat!

On Sunday, we attended a matinee of the Island Players ~ Guilty Conscience, a crafty thriller by the creators of “Columbo” and “Murder She Wrote.”  At intermission, we enjoyed a few “Guilty Pleasures” ~ tea cakes and cookies.

On Monday, fun still not done, Mary Lou and Larry took us to lunch at The Waterfront ~ a delicious “thank you” for helping clean out Betty’s villa.

Today we plan to rest up for next weekend.  Which starts . . . tomorrow!

What’s that?  Weekends don’t begin on Wednesday and end on Monday?  Of course they do.  They must.  How else would we pack in all this fun?

Aah . . . that’s better!

How did you “spend” the weekend?  Are you “paying for it” this week?

1. Rainee - November 12, 2013

It is a hard life but someone has to do it 🙂

nrhatch - November 12, 2013

Having FUN is hard work ~ we’re exhausted!

2. SuziCate - November 12, 2013

Good food, good fun and entertainment, and good people = good times!

nrhatch - November 12, 2013

Yes! We enjoyed everything we did this weekend (except, perhaps, for cleaning up hairballs and accidents) ~ but we like to have a bit more “down time” between the “good times.” 😉

3. shreejacob - November 12, 2013

That’s a wonderfully packed “weekend” 😉

nrhatch - November 12, 2013

The island is starting to “wake up” from its summer slumber now that the snowbirds are drifting back ~ we packed a few too many things into the schedule this past weekend and we are “paying for it” now. Next weekend should be a bit more “low key.”

shreejacob - November 12, 2013

LOL!!! It’s cool..all in the balance they say…one week party hard, next week low key 😉

nrhatch - November 12, 2013

Yes! Moderation in all things . . . including merry-making. 😛

4. Grannymar - November 12, 2013

I had a very quiet weekend, no callers or visitors, it was very cold so I cosied up to my lovely warm fire!

nrhatch - November 12, 2013

Your warm fire looked very inviting! Fireside in winter weather = a cozy place to be.

5. Don - November 12, 2013

Now that’s what I call a celebration of life. Life is beautiful, life is good.

nrhatch - November 12, 2013

We enjoyed it all . . . but are ready for a “breaK” after a whirlwind weekend. 😀

6. katecrimmins - November 12, 2013

So what do you really do for fun?

nrhatch - November 12, 2013

Haha! We really crammed in the activities this past weekend. Now we need a break to recuperate from all that FUN. 😎

katecrimmins - November 12, 2013

I believe that! I need to recuperate from READING about all your fun! I am so jealous!

nrhatch - November 12, 2013

I remember my parents (at our current age) being horrified that BFF and I would head out at 10 or 11 pm on Friday and Saturday nights to par-tay . . . just as they were heading to bed.

Now, we get it! 😀

7. colonialist - November 12, 2013

I am another one who feels utterly exhausted just reading about it.
Talk about keeping on the go!

nrhatch - November 12, 2013

We came close to skipping the Festival on Saturday night, in part because we expected we’d have to park a mile away from the venue. When we got there, the attendant waved us into the front row with a perfect view of the stage. So we kicked back and relaxed in cushioned (and reclining) comfort.

Without that unexpected dividend, we would never have made it through the weekend. 😛

colonialist - November 12, 2013

Wow – your special angels were on double overtime!

nrhatch - November 12, 2013

When we saw the open spot, we issued a quick THANKS! . . . to any angels listening in. 😉

8. Pocket Perspectives - November 12, 2013

What an amazing weekend! wow! 😀

nrhatch - November 12, 2013

We had tons of FUN and enjoyed it all, Kathy. But having a quiet day today was also a treat ~ I biked to Water Aerobics this morning, then caught up with To Do’s around the house and in the office. Reclaiming that balance felt great.

9. barb19 - November 12, 2013

Wow, I’m exhausted too! You need a full week to recover from all that eating, socializing etc. Hope Tigger didn’t leave you too many little “accidents” to clean up when you got home!

nrhatch - November 12, 2013

Yes! We do have another round of events coming up ~ but we won’t have another weekend like this one for awhile. Tigger hasn’t had an accident since Thursday. Knock on wood, that trend continues. He’s still enjoying his treats, his walks, and his morning cuddle. 😀

10. sufilight - November 13, 2013

Wow! This was a fun filled, delicious weekend! I am curious about the planetarium. I am going to see if we have one nearby as I would love to be able to get a close up of the universe. 🙂

nrhatch - November 13, 2013

The planetarium’s capabilities are “out of this world” ~ we saw a quick overview at the Open House and look forward to a more extended show later this month.

As we zoomed out from Earth to the edge of our solar system and then to the far reaches Milky Way, the massive nature of the all of it all awed me.

11. Pix Under the Oaks - November 13, 2013

Whoa! So I don’t seem to be the only one distracted by food lately! You two were busy busy! Tigger was busy too.. 🙂

nrhatch - November 13, 2013

We ate some yummy stuff over the weekend . . . trying to scale back a bit this week so we don’t end up packing on the pounds.

But I’d still scarf down a slice of CH’s home-baked bread. 😛

12. Three Well Beings - November 13, 2013

Goodness girl! That’s SOME weekend. How did you fit all of that into just one? Here it is Wednesday and I’m thinking you could justify still needing some rest. What a fun time with your family–pirates indeed! I love that you share your food choices…of course, now I’m hungry! 🙂

nrhatch - November 13, 2013

Thanks, Debra! We barely squeezed it all in. Playing pirates is always fun ~ “Aargh, matey! I be a pirate seeking treasure!”

And now we’ve started back up again! I went to PlayReaders this afternoon ~ “What I Did Last Summer.” Tonight, we’re going to “Florida Stories” at the Planetarium. Tomorrow, we’re going to “Tampa Bay ~ Footprints in the Sand” at the Library and then out to celebrate the 33rd Anniversary of our first date by “eating dessert first” at Stonewood Grill. On Friday, we’re celebrating “Clean Refrigerator Day” and going to Porch Parties on Pine that evening.

If we have any “good eats” . . . I’ll be sure to snap some pics.

13. Perfecting Motherhood - November 13, 2013

I love Mochi ice cream! They sell it at Trader Joe’s but I have yet to try it there. By the way, I got full just by looking at your pictures.

nrhatch - November 13, 2013

Mochi ice cream is interesting ~ the flavors at the Shiny Fish Emporium vary from month to month. In January, they’re having Sea Salt Caramel. 😀

Perfecting Motherhood - November 13, 2013

Sounds yummy!

nrhatch - November 13, 2013

Food = variety and spice in life. Even if nothing else changes, we can mix up our meals to keep things “fresh.”

14. jannatwrites - November 14, 2013

Wow, weekends in Florida sure are long 🙂 Sounds like you had fun, but I feel like I need a nap after reading all you’ve been up to!

nrhatch - November 14, 2013

This has been a bit busier than we prefer, but there are so many fun things going on that we are “on the go” again. Attended Play Readers yesterday afternoon ~> “What I Did Last Summer.” Went to the planetarium last night for Think and Drink ~> “Florida Stories.” Today, it’s off to the library for a lecture on Tampa Bay ~> “Footprints in the Sand.” Then we are going to “Eat Dessert First” at Stonewood Grill to celebrate 33 years from our first date.

Tomorrow, Saturday, and Sunday have lots of fun ideas to choose from too. Whew! Can’t wait until the holidays arrive and we can S`L`O`W down.

15. bluebee - November 23, 2013

It’s exhausting not working! I’ll have some of that ice-cream please! Yum

nrhatch - November 23, 2013

The whirlwind has slowed down a bit . . . which suits us both. As for that ice cream, “Coming Right Up.” 😉
