When Birds Come To Roost ‘Ere October 19, 2013

Yesterday on the back deck, in the span of 60 seconds, I saw a pelican fly overhead, then another pelican, then 2 great white egrets, followed by a roseate spoonbill.
I didn’t have my camera handy, so you’ll have to take my word for it. But here’s a pelican from a previous expedition.
This morning, I saw a great blue heron fishing on the opposite bank, along side a white egret and 2 ibis.
Again, no camera. But here’s a previous visitor to our deck, or perhaps the same one at a different time.
I also saw a number of vultures swooping and soaring over the lagoon. Their wings have a tell-tale WHOOSH that I recognize without even looking up.
The vultures reminded me of this naughty joke: The Farmer’s Cock. Enjoy!

Yeah, sure. Two turtles flew over yesterday here. “I didn’t have my camera handy, so you’ll have to take my word for it.”
Maybe they were two turtle doves? Let me know when you see Pigs take flight! That would be some sight. 😀

We enjoy the BIG birds around here. There’s an osprey that rests in a tree just opposite the villa. We see him/her almost every day. Sometimes eating. Sometimes digesting. Sometimes hunting. Sometimes resting.

I’m the only big bird round here and a crazy one at that! I am pestered with neighbourhood cats using my garden as a walkway and they seem to have driven all the little birds away!
Aww . . . hope they return soon.
Feeding the birds in winter (especially the bright colored cardinals) always kept me from getting Cabin Fever.
Maybe in the Spring!
Maybe the cats will stay inside, fireside, during the cooler weather . . . giving you a chance to entice the birds back with some FAT sunflower seeds? 😀

Thanks, Don. We love it here. Especially now when the island is starting to wake up after its summer slumber. Bayfest is this weekend. Last night at the pier, we saw a paddle boarder with TWO passengers aboard. Dog #1 and Dog #2. Both wearing life jackets.
When we got home, we asked Tigger if he wanted to go paddle boarding. He deferred decision to a later date.
Herons are gorgeous birds, Nancy! What fabulous visitors you have.
They are! It’s a JOY to wander out on the deck, look around, and see birds of a feather milling about or flying o’er head.
Looks like you got every kind of bird there except for me! I can’t resist a bird post.

Dang! The only things on my balcony are pigeons. I do have a hawk show up now and then but mostly just pigeons.
Make sure those hawks don’t make off with Teddy! We had one on the balcony once that could easily have air-lifted Tigger away.
I would be completely entranced with routine sightings of such glorious birds! I haven’t had much exposure to vultures, but they also must be really intriguing. And I’m not even familiar with a roseate spoonbill! Such diversity is really a treasure, I think. 🙂
Vultures are not attractive birds when grounded . . . but they are magnificent fliers. There’s a good shot of some Roseate Spoonbills in this post:
I love the variety of birds! Tonight, my husband saw a bald eagle. It was in a tree near his friend’s house and the guy said the eagle is always around. I hope to go see it this week- with my camera ready. I’ve always wanted to see an eagle in person.
I have seen Bald Eagles, on occasion, both here and in MD ~ there’s a nesting pair about 3 miles from the villa in Robinson Preserve. They come back each year to have their chicks.
Good luck getting a glimpse and photo of the Bald Eagle in your neighborhood. Wonderful to watch them soar.

We see more GBH’s here than anywhere else we’ve lived ~ saw them on occasion in NJ, with regularity in MD, and daily here.
