WARNING: This pictures in this post may increase your Hunger Awareness.
In connection with Hunger Action Month (September), Ron Shaich, the CEO of Panera fed himself on $4.50 a day ~ the equivalent of SNAP (Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program) benefits for a single person.

On September 11th, we attended a Lecture and Lunch on Charitable Giving at Renaissance on 9th ~ an arm of Meals on Wheels PLUS Manatee. Haskell Gates, the CFO of Meals on Wheels PLUS, joined us at our table where we chatted over a (slightly blurry) simple salad of mixed greens.
Like me, Haskell abandoned a lucrative job (after 17 years as a C.P.A.) to switch to non-profit work. He is far happier in his new role, promoting events like Empty Bowls (more below).
After the salad, we enjoyed a delicious plate of Pumpkin Ravioli, roasted peppers, and fresh asparagus.
And for dessert, we inhaled fragrant Apple Crisp with vanilla ice cream so fast that I forgot to SNAP a photo.

Empty Bowls, held in October, is part of Hunger Awareness Month . . . for a $25 you buy a bowl you can keep, get it filled with soup, and enjoy a cookie:
The symbolic meal of soup and bread demonstrates that together, we can fill the empty bowls of our neighbors in need.
Aah . . . that’s better!
