Yesterday, in addition to trying paddle boarding for the first time, we went on a Tram Ride around Oscar Scherer State Park.

IMGP3996

We met some sociable Scrub Jays (and some sociable kayakers and bikers).

IMGP3999

We learned the name of these beautiful berries ~> Beauty Berries.

IMGP2919a

We hiked a bit of the Legacy Trail, transformed into a bike trail by removing most of the old rail road tracks . . . but not all of them.

IMGP4004

We walked around Osprey Lake before heading to the beach to climb aboard a YOLO board.

IMGP4009

And we enjoyed a picnic lunch while listening to some fine fiddling music. Β All in all a great place to spend National Public Lands Day.

Aah . . . that’s better!

You did amost excellent job of celebrating my birthday.. πŸ˜€

nrhatch - September 29, 2013

Happy Birthday, Pix! Hope you had a FUN-FILLED day! We just got back from a National Plug-In Day celebration at Mote Aquarium. I test drove a few pure electric vehicles ~ one would be great for the beach. The Campus Car can be hosed out!

It’s as cute as a VW Bug . . . gone Electric!

That sounds like a wonderful day out!

nrhatch - September 29, 2013

It was, Grannymar. We’d never been to Oscar Scherer before. Seeing new horizons is always lovely. And trying paddleb oarding for the first time put a big GRIN on my face.

My kind of place, Nancy. Lovely pics.

nrhatch - September 29, 2013

It’s only 30 miles from us . . . but a world away in many ways. We’d like to go back and do more hiking in the cooler months.

Those beauty berries are special! I’ve never seen any like that. You chose a wonderful place for National Public Lands Day! I forgot all about it! I’ll enjoy photos of your fun weekend, though. πŸ™‚

We saw those berries last fall at Historic Spanish Point ~ just up the road from Oscar Scherer State Park. It’s nice to know what they’re called ~ and such an apt name it is.

I would never remember half of these National Days . . . but I’m on LOTS of mailing lists for events in the area. When I see something FUN, I pencil it in on the calendar as a possibility.

What lovely day. Enjoyed the tour, and those Beauty berries are beautiful!

nrhatch - October 1, 2013

I was tickled that the docent on the tram tour pointed them out and ID’d them for me. Since seeing them last year at Historic Spanish Point, I’ve wondered what to call them.

Of course, I probably could have inserted the image into a Google Image search to find the name ~ I’ve done that with a few images with great success.

Turns out they are edible berries, but too tart to eat without turning them into jelly, jam, or preserves.

Hey I have a Beauty Berry Bush! My dad gave it to me quite a few years back and we didn’t know the name of it. The purple berries are so beautiful!

Yay! That is so cool, Linda. They are so attractive in natural or manicured landscapes.
