catlady“Whatcha doing?”

“Nothing.”

“Don’t be ridiculous.  You are doing something.”

“Nope.  I’m just sitting here.”

“Sitting is something.”

“Not really.  I’m just sitting here, staring unseeing into space.”

“That’s something, not nothing.”

“Well, it’s nothing much.”

“Don’t sell yourself short.  You’re a real multi-tasker.”

“I am?”

“Of course.  You are never doing nothing. You are always doing something.”

“Such as?”

“You’re perceiving.”

“Right now?”

“Yup.  You’re extracting biologically relevant data from sensory inputs and processing the info received.”

“What type of info?”

“Information about light, sound, the chemical composition of the atmosphere, temperature, head orientation, limb position, the chemical composition of the bloodstream, and more.”

“Impressive.”

“And you’re breathing.  And your heart is beating, circulating oxygenated blood throughout the body.”

“Keep going.  I’m feeling less and less indolent.”

“Your nerve cells are monitoring the temperature of the air, deciding whether it’s too hot, too cold, or just right.”

“Interesting.  Anything else?”

“Of course.  You’re digesting your last meal.  And sending neural impulses from synapse to synapse at speeds of 250 miles per hour.”

“Wow!  I’m a veritable hotbed of activity . . . even when doing nothing.”

“Exactly.  Your brain is a powerhouse, a real go-getter.”

“So at my next job interview, I could describe myself as a self-starter?”

“Absolutely.  Your brain orchestrates your systems with no managerial input, and keeps things running smoothly even when you’re asleep at the switch.”

“Fantastic!  Now I can get back to doing what I do best.”

“What’s that?”

“Nothing much.”

Aah . . . that’s better!
