Snooty’s 65th Birthday Bash July 20, 2013

Snooty’s turning 65 this year so the South Florida Museum threw a party for him today. For the next hour, you can watch him on the Live Cam.
He received LOTS of cards. And a very special cake.
A few FUN facts about Snooty:
1. Snooty is documented as the oldest manatee in captivity, and is likely the oldest manatee in the world!
7. Snooty’s body shape is different than that of other manatees because of his interest in people. He pulls the front part of his body up out of his pool to say “hi!”, which has earned him some particularly large shoulder muscles.
9. Snooty appeared on the popular children’s television show Captain Kangaroo in 1982 as part of a segment about manatees.
24. Manatee ancestors date back about 50 million years! The modern manatee has been swimming in coastal waters for about one million years.
25. Manatees have nostrils or “nose plugs” which close when they are under water to keep water from entering their lungs.
36. Snooty has a sweet tooth! His favorite treats are pineapples and strawberries… but he only gets those on his birthday for dietary reasons.
37. Manatees eat about 8-10% of their body weight each day! Snooty has slowed down a bit in his old age, however. He eats about 70 pounds of veggies every day which is around 7% of his body weight.
51. Manatees are sirenians. Different species of sirenians (including the Florida Manatee, Antillean Manatee, Amazonian Manatee, West African Manatee, and Dugong) are found around the world: North, Central, and South America, Africa, Southern Asia, and Australia.
58. Snooty is an official member of AARP.
65. Snooty was born on July 21, 1948 in an aquarium on the Prinz Valdemar, a Danish warship that capsized in the Miami Harbor!

Aah . . . that’s better!
🙂
We had a FUN time helping Snooty celebrate this morning . . .Sarasota Jungle Gardens brought a parrot and a brown skunk (called Mocha), there were dancers, games and activities for kids, the Garbage Man band played guitars made from empty cereal boxes, AND Blue Bell Ice Cream gave out FREE samples.
Ice cream for breakfast? Yes. Please.
Fun, indeed. Thanks for the humor and information!
The guests at his party made out better than Snooty ~ we got free ice cream and he got a cabbage cake with carrot candles.
Love that cake!
Carrying in a cabbage cake with carrot candles while singing “Happy Birthday” would be a mean prank to play on a birthday boy or girl ready to have their sweet tooth satisfied. But I’m sure that Snooty LOVED it! 😀
That’s all amazing!
I love the vegetarian delight.
Glad you enjoyed, Col. Snooty has an enormous Fan Base here in Florida. His party was well attended and lots of fun.
Poor thing only gets his favorties once a year! I wonder if he feels his age.
Hard to say, Linda. Manatees are slow-going mammals to begin with. They put him on a diet this year and he lost 200 pounds ~ from 1200 to 1000. I guess that it’s not just humans who pack on the pounds as they age. 😀
Oh he is gorgeous! Love that cake!
He seems an affable sort, “hey guys . . . what’s going on?” 😀
This is just too cute! And I loved the cake! Super creative. First time visiting the blog and I really liked it 😀 I’ll try to keep up now. See ya!
Thanks! Feel free to stop back by whenever spirit moves ya! 😉
Will do my best!
We’ll leave the light on for ya! 💡
Amen!
And I am old enough to remember Captain Kangaroo.
I watched Captain Kangaroo, Mr. Green Jeans, Soupy Sales, and Flipper! 😀
Fascinating, Nancy! Loved hearing all the facts about Snooty…and I am old enough to remember Howdy Doody and Princess Summer-Fall-Winter-Spring. and Midnight the Cat.:) 🙂
Thanks, Vivian. I’ve heard of Howdy Doody, but the other two don’t ring a bell. I wonder if they were regional, rather than national? Debra (Breathe Lighter) wrote about a show she enjoyed as a child and it turns out it only aired in California.
Princess Summerfall Winterspring was a character on the Howdy Doody show, hosted by Bob Smith.:) And Midnight the Cat was on Andy’s Gang (1955-60), hosted by Andy Devine (more famous for his cowboy roles). Oh my, what a walk down memory lane.:)
I remember Felix the Cat, Mighty Mouse, Underdog, Magilla Gorilla, Yogi Bear, and Mr. Ed (the talking horse). 😀
Wonderful cake a cabbage cake! maybe I should try that instead of chocolate cake next year!
There’s an idea to whittle awa’ your waist! Imagine your party guests’ reactions if they arrived ready to have their sweet tooth satisfied.
Unless, of course, your guests are related to Snooty!
it would be a sure way to have my name taken off the Christmas card list!!
I bet you’re right! 😉
Happy Birthday Snooty and thank you for letting us join, 🙂
Something a bit out of the ordinary. Until we moved here, I’d never been to a manatee birthday party.
Today, another first! I’m going to our 90-year-old neighbor’s birthday party! I hope Carmeane’s daughters don’t expect her to blow out 90 candles! 😳
I chuckled when you wrote that Snooty is an official member of AARP. Happy Birthday Snooty, you are also a Cancerian. 😀
That’s right. And Cancerians are under the sign of water ~ right up Snooty’s “alley.” 😎
Happy Belated Burp-day Snooty!!! and may you have many more!! 😀
Awesome looking cake too!
Everyone should indulge in favorite foods on their birthdays!
[…] at Snooty’s Birthday Bash, Blue Bell Ice Cream gave away FREE ice cream to attendees ~ ice cream sandwiches, fudgicles, […]
That’s so cool! I’m glad he gets strawberries and pineapples for his birthday. Everyone deserves a birthday treat!
That’s what I think. Of course, now that Snooty’s 65, maybe they should indulge him more than once a year.
Snooty is lookin’ good for 65! Must be those veggies!!
Yes! Chock full of anti-oxidants to keep him healthy, handsome, and happy. 😀
That’s a good innings – a weightless life is the answer 🙂
These days, I hope into the pool twice a week for Water Aerobics . . . it’s great fun being “weightless” with less wear and tear on my aging joints. 😀
What fun !
The South Florida Museum was THRILLED with the turnout:
This year, Snooty’s Birthday Bash, Arts & Wildlife Awareness Festival broke even more records than just Snooty’s historic 65th birthday! The Museum welcomed more than 2,300 people inside for half-priced admission – the most the Museum has ever seen on one day. Including the outdoor festival attendees, Museum officials estimate an overall attendance of at least 6,000 people! This truly was a special year for Snooty.
