Who took Granny’s award-winning Fourth of July cherry pie?

What did Robin tell Sarah who told Olivia who told Gracie about Anna in cabin 7?

Where did the flags for the parade disappear to?

Why doesn’t Becky Sue want to go to the fireworks show?

What does Old Mrs. Hootenspiegal know about the mayor!

Your mystery doesn’t have to be earth-shattering.  Just reveal or solve a secret or mystery in your entry.

More details:  The Fourth of July Secret Mystery Writing Contest

* * * * *

So . . . do you have a favorite 4th of July tradition?  A picnic?  A parade? A pie eating contest? A date with a hammock?

1. Grannymar - June 17, 2013

We don’t do 4th of July, mind you if that President of yours keeps visiting, we might be tempted to add it to the calendar! 😉 The rain even stopped for him this morning and the yellow yoke in the sky appeared!

I’ll be putting my thinking cap on…. I wonder if I know four hundred wurds!

Wurds is not a misspelling. Honest. It is the way the word ‘words’ sounds in a strong Dublin accent!

nrhatch - June 17, 2013

Oh, do play along. Susanna’s contests are always great FUN. It’s wonderful to see all the different directions folks take with their tales, prose, and poems.

2. Grannymar - June 17, 2013

I have taken note of the details, Nancy. I hope you didn’t think I was being disrespectful to your President. His good lady wife and daughters are in the city of my birth this afternoon, watching Riverdance!

nrhatch - June 17, 2013

Not at all. Hope they have a good visit and you continue to enjoy pleasant weather.

‘It is a complete mystery how these naughty rebels got away with declaring independance from a little island near Europe. Just think, they don’t even have a King or Queen any more!’

No, perhaps that won’t be quite the right note to strike … 🙂

nrhatch - June 17, 2013

That might be a FUN twist on a History Mystery! 😀

colonialist - June 17, 2013

It might strain the American sense of humour, a bit!

nrhatch - June 17, 2013

Yes, you might be right. We might rebel . . . or revolt!

4. kateshrewsday - June 17, 2013

A wonderful idea for a competition, Nancy!

nrhatch - June 17, 2013

I hope you’ll play along . . . or maybe Maddie could write an Owl Mystery and guest post?

A Hoo-Dunnit!

5. Susanna Leonard Hill - June 17, 2013

Thanks so much for the shout-out Nancy! I must say, I really like the idea of a date with a hammock! It sounds pretty unbeatable right now! 🙂 I will look forward to seeing what you come up with 🙂

nrhatch - June 17, 2013

Thanks again! You host the best contests . . . we should all chip in and get you a hammock! 😉

6. spilledinkguy - June 18, 2013

I’m afraid if there’s pie missing and I’m around there’s not much of a mystery as to what happened! Pies fear me, you know!

nrhatch - June 18, 2013

SIG (on a photo shoot, with appetite): “Man, that pie looks like it’s made to be eaten.”

Pie (on a photo shoot, with attitude): “Stop drooling and take the damn picture. Wait! What are you doing? Stop that! . . . ”

SIG: “Nothing like a pie on the side photo shoot!”

7. countingducks - June 18, 2013

Its a great idea although I’m from the UK where the 4th July is just another day. Good luck with the contest

nrhatch - June 18, 2013

It’s open to all! You can set it . . . “in a country where the locals don’t celebrate 4th of July.”

8. jannatwrites - June 21, 2013

Sounds like a fun contest. I’ll have to let it simmer to see if any ideas come to mind. (Surely just coming back from vacation in Washington DC, I can think of something )

nrhatch - June 21, 2013

Yes! Please participate . . . it would be nice to see you actually SOLVE a mystery (instead of stringing us along from cat food to safe deposit boxes). 😛

9. shreejacob - June 21, 2013

Oh..hmmm….July 1st you say…to the 5th…400 words…ooo maybe I might try it..hehe

nrhatch - June 21, 2013

Yes! The more the merrier. You can link up from July 1st through July 5th, but posting a link on Susanna’s site.
