IMGP3537d“What happened then?”

“We walked back through the alley as fast as we could.  We wanted to get the hell out of there.”

“Understandable.”

“When we reached the bench and Betty saw the pile of sand in front of it, she gasped and grabbed her neck.”

“Why?”

“She realized that the necklace with the vial of sand was missing.”

“Had it come off when she handed you the glasses?”

“It must have.  She’s sure she was still wearing it when she emptied her shoes.”

“Did you go back for it?”

Freddie gave me a withering look.

“No.  I guess not.  So, what happened?”

IMGP3537c“We stood by the bench for a minute, debating what to do next.”

“Because you couldn’t walk out onto Fifth Avenue looking like a bunch of mutants.”

“Exactly.  But the light started shifting again.”

“Back to normal?”

“Not normal.  But color returned and the metallic glow dissipated.”

“Then what?”

“I took Betty home so she could lie down.”

I sat back.  Leaning against Flipper’s tail.  I let Freddie’s recollections settle as I considered what we knew and what we still needed to know.

I pondered the next best step.
Thankful that the earlier mental fog seemed to have lifted.

After a minute or two, I spoke.  “Freddie, why don’t you and I go back there right now and read the rest of the plaque.  It might help to explain what’s been happening around here.”

IMGP3544b“Can’t do it.”

“Look.  I understand you’re shaken up.  But if we wish to get to the bottom of this, the plaque is the best place to start.”

Freddie nodded.  “I agree.”

“So . . . let’s go.”

“We can’t.  It’s gone.”

“What’s gone?”

“All of it.  The plaque.  The totem pole . . . ”

“. . . and the alley.”

“Exactly.  Teddy and I went back that night, and again the next day, and three times since.”

That sounded more like the Freddie I knew.

“Teddy and I combed Fifth Avenue from West to East and East to West.  It’s gone.  If it weren’t for all the odd goings on around here, I’d be convinced that Betty and I imagined the whole thing.”

I am just happy they got out of the metallic situation! Ooo that little vial of sand…….

nrhatch - March 25, 2013

Me too! You never know what mischief characters are going to get into . . . especially amphibious super heroes intent on shaking up the hands of time.

2. colonialist - March 25, 2013

Your party is most definitely as advertised!
One advantage of my iffy connectivity is that I was able to gobble four episodes in one go.

nrhatch - March 25, 2013

Thanks, Col. Hope you’re still hungry for more! And that your connectivity issues are history in short order.

3. Grannymar - March 25, 2013

And there’s more! Yipee.

nrhatch - March 25, 2013

Yay! Glad you’re still enjoying it. Thanks!

4. Don - March 25, 2013

It gets more and more mysterious.

nrhatch - March 25, 2013

And the best is yet to come. 😀

5. SidevieW - March 25, 2013

definitely there are mushrooms involved, maybe some green leaves and some toad-licking

nrhatch - March 25, 2013

What about the Hookah Smoking Caterpillar? Should he make a guest appearance . . . a reprise role? 😎

SidevieW - March 25, 2013

Definitely!!!

nrhatch - March 25, 2013

Actually, I’ve got something even better than the Hookah Smoking Caterpillar coming down the pipe-line . . . a telepathic frog, a clairvoyant madame AND a shaman. 😎

6. spilledinkguy - March 25, 2013

Oh, no! What a time to re-zone!
🙂

nrhatch - March 25, 2013

I’ve been enjoying the telling of this tale, SIG. It’s an experiment to fly without a map (or plot line) and let the characters and events determine each new fork in the road. 😀

7. diannegray - March 25, 2013

Very intriguing indeed, Nancy… 😀

nrhatch - March 25, 2013

Thanks, Dianne. Writing this while “winging it” has been FAB FUN!

8. sufilight - March 25, 2013

OOoOoh, the alley disappeared, wonder if it will reappear? 😀

nrhatch - March 25, 2013

We shall see, won’t we? 😉

9. jannatwrites - March 26, 2013

And the benefit of being several days behind is that I got to read these four parts in one sitting. This is an interesting party, for sure. I’m glad you’re going to add to this…I’m curious about what exactly is going on around the house and whatever happened with that vial of sand. Disappearing alleys make for a confusing situation!

nrhatch - March 26, 2013

I’ve got some FUN characters coming down the pipe-line between now and story’s end . . . a telepathic frog, a clairvoyant madame AND a shaman. 😀

10. Three Well Beings - March 26, 2013

You most definitely named this story correctly! Most peculiar, yes! Have you recently changed anything in your diet? 🙂

nrhatch - March 26, 2013

Hahaha! The inspiration for this story came from the photos I took from a trip to Naples a few weeks ago. W&M invited us down for a cocktail party at an estate. We drove down early and visited the beach, the pier, a park, and Fifth Avenue. Some of the photos were a bit bizarre ~ the frogs outside the Wind in the Willow, an alley, a totem pole, the beach, etc.

I started playing with the “what ifs.” What if ALL these photos related in some way . . . what type of story would that require?

And then I started writing, to weave the images together. It’s been GRAND FUN following the yellow-brick road. 😎

11. viviankirkfield - March 27, 2013

Aha! I knew there would be a problem with the vial when she took the glasses off her neck. I love the disappearing alley. This is probably how our world actually is…with many layers of life all living in the same place at the same time but in a different dimension.:) I’m getting the flavor of the Griffin and Sabine books. Great writing, Nancy!

nrhatch - March 27, 2013

Thanks, Vivian. I only retraced my steps to add foreshadow elements in 1-2 places. All other foreshadows appeared “of their own accord” . . . pointing the way from mystical step to magical pebble until I’d crossed the pond. 😎

12. Perfecting Motherhood - March 27, 2013

Insert Twilight Zone music…

nrhatch - March 27, 2013

That would be PERFECT! 😯

13. Pocket Perspectives - March 29, 2013

ah ha…here I am in part 4…I’ve waited to read them so I can read them consecutively, and now all this sand, glows and intrigue has sent me off in search of ….a margarita! …ah ha…I’m back and ready to continue with the intrigue!

nrhatch - March 29, 2013

Yay! Kathy’s in Margaritaville!

Pocket Perspectives - March 30, 2013

😀

14. dearrosie - March 29, 2013

Ah hah I read your reply to Debra – I was also going to ask what inspired your story. You’ve written this charming tale after one little trip to Naples?

nrhatch - March 29, 2013

Yes. I started to do a single post to share the pics from our day in Naples from pier to Fifth Avenue to cocktail party. But this story was itching to be let out to play. 😀
