Starting this morning, they’ve been rolling in fast and furious. Each time I check my e-mail, “LAST CHANCE” pleas greet me.
In a single 30-minute period, appeals from The Ocean Conservancy, HSUS, ASPCA, WWF, Green America and 4 other groups alerted me to the pending midnight DEADLINE for contributions.
Talk about creating a sense of arbitrary urgency. 😉
At least these non-profits are engaged in work I applaud and support throughout the year.
Not all “pass the hat” groups can say the same.
Have you heard of the National Film Preservation Foundation?
The NFPF uses actors, actresses, directors, producers, and other Hollywood types (you know, people who have raked in mega-bucks for entertaining the masses) as spokespersons to get us, the paying public, to chip in to restore old movies and films.
WTF?!

Steven Spielberg, Martin Scorsese, Clint Eastwood and other “glitterati” are asking us to fork over $$$’s to preserve their motion picture legacy?!
They’ve got a lot of nerve.
As far as I’m concerned, people who have been featured on Lifestyles of the Rich and Famous have NO business passing the hat in my direction.
Get your hand out of my pocket!
Go raid your own piggy banks.

The next time I see him, I’ll pass along your message. He and Stephen King both have places down here along the Gulf Coast . . . although, somewhat surprisingly, neither have invited me over for happy hour. Yet.
I have real issues with Hollywood and their inhabitants. Isn’t this why we have VHS, DVD’s and Netflix now? To preserve all these movies?
The first time I saw a plea for $’s from the NFPF, I burst out laughing at the “haves” asking the “have nots” for money.
It’s not that films aren’t worth preserving . . . it’s a question of WHO should foot the bill. I’m convinced that the Motion Picture Industry should pass the hat around Hollywood to raise the necessary funds. Actors and Actresses who command millions for their performances could tithe to the NFPF instead of paying for unnecessary plastic surgery.
Thank heavens I don’t get all those e-mails…I have enough personal guilt to deal with. 🙂
I felt as if I was being bombarded this morning, Kathy: “you’ve got mail” . . . “give us money” . . . “you’ve got mail” . . . “donate now” . . . “you’ve got mail” . . . “we need your help” . . . “you’ve got mail” . . . “we need your money.”
One plea might have made me feel guilty . . . but so many “urgent” requests in such a short timeframe made it easy for me to press “delete.”
Fundraising is becoming “big business” . . . with all sorts of organizations sprouting up to enhance the fundraising potential of professional fundraisers. And some of the salaries of fundraising professionals make me question who benefits from our charitable donations ~ the cause . . . or the folks on the payroll.
How ridiculous. It reminds me of taxes, in general. The U.S. government keeps taking more money from the poor in order to feed themselves Surf and Turf dinners. Makes me wanna vom.
Agreed! Until Congress trims the excess from their salaries, benefits, and perks, I will do whatever I can to limit the $’s I send in with my 1040 form. They are out of control.

I did get a few of those but I got more of the sales that are ENDING today. Of course, there will be a new sale tomorrow but you wouldn’t think so by the emails.
Oh, I got the sales and marketing e-mails too . . . but I always delete those without reading. 😉
You ‘re right on the money with this one. I love movies, probably watch far more of them than I should. But there is no way on this green earth that I would give money to an industry that is completely founded on greed and superficiality. HAPPY NEW YEAR!
Exactly my stance, klrs! Especially an industry populated by super wealthy narcissists. Let them buy their own mirrors.

I’ve always felt supporting one’s own community’s charitable efforts was the best way to go.
More and more, I want to see the impact in the immediate community . . . but I certainly don’t feel like giving hand-outs to millionaires. That would be silly.

One of the pizza joints is collecting for a charity and they hit me up when I place my order. I’m terrified they’ll spit in my pizza if I don’t give them a dollar.
Would they? Could they? . . . better not chance it!
Speaking of pizza, we just ordered an X-large cheese pie for tonight’s celebration, along with an order of baked ziti, salad, and garlic knots.
What? Stop looking at me like that. We won’t eat it ALL.

We’ve had a huge number of end of the year requests for charitable donations… many I appreciate, others not so much….what an amazing variety of organizations there are out there!
They kept coming all day yesterday . . . I must have gotten 25 in all. Too many causes rely on handouts instead of raising funds the old fashioned way, but earning them.

This is new to me, and since it’s not an emergency I agree with your statments “get your hands out of my pocket!” 😀 And read the comments, and I am chuckling because we ordered pizza today at Papa Murphy’s at my suggestion, but finished eating it early. We hardly eat pizza these days, so it’s a treat! 😀
We had pizza and ziti last night . . . plus salad and garlic knots. A veritable feast! Definitely designed to ensure a happy ending to 2012.
Tired today . . . got up at 5:30 to watch the London New Year’s Day Parade. (yawn) Got to see my niece perform with the featured band ~ The USF Marching Band! Woo Hoo!
This has never happened to me, Nancy. Clint must know something we don’t. He is obviously aware it would be a dead loss asking the Shrewsdays….
If Clint wants money from me . . . he’ll have to come knock on my door and ask real nice like. 😀
I don’t get solicitations for donations (except for emails from retail stores trying to tempt me into ‘buying into’ their sales.) A deadline for charitable contributions seems rather arbitrary when the charities are established and running year-round.
Exactly! But one after the other they paraded into my In-Box to proclaim 12/31 to be my LAST CHANCE to help them reach their goals. I found it annoying.
Now I can’t even access my e-mail . . . I think all the JUNQUE MAIL caused it to go on strike. 🙄
I’ve noticed that any charity I’ve donated too in the past sends me an email asking me to donate every day of December, every year. And that’s not counting the stuff I get in my mailbox. I just have to pick a few charities I really want to support and get rid of the emails from the others. Hollywood has not and will not be on my list!
Yup . . . the closer it got to the end of the year, the more solicitation requests we received. I gues they figure “the more the merrier.” Hollywood will never be on my list either.
