Got Dogs? May 30, 2012

My brother-in-law invented a bike tow leash for exercising the guide dogs that he and my sister raise and socialize.

Designed to prevent tipping and tangling and mangling of limbs (both yours and your pets), his bike tow leash allows you to exercise your pets atย faster speeds than using your own foot power.

His invention is started to hit the airwaves, along with other cool pet products for your pampered pup:

And another segment:

If you want to combine biking with “walking the dog” . . . check out BikeTowLeash.com

Aah . . . that’s better!

Very impressive!

nrhatch - May 30, 2012

They’ve trained 9 guide dogs since the collapse of the World Trade Centers in the 9/11 attacks. All 9 dogs LOVED running with the bike tow leash . . . much better than going for a “walk.”

2. Crowing Crone Joss - May 30, 2012

I’m going to send this link to my daughter, the dog trainer.

nrhatch - May 30, 2012

Excellent! Thanks, Joss.

3. Tori Nelson - May 30, 2012

The only thing that sounds cooler than this would be a contraption that let my dog ride the bicycle… while I nap in the wagon being towed. Other than my laziness, this leash is pretty stinking cool!

nrhatch - May 30, 2012

Lots of dogs will do the “pedaling” for you . . . but you still need to stay awake and steer clear of shart objects. ๐Ÿ˜‰

4. Sandra Bell Kirchman - May 30, 2012

I’m impressed by the cleverness of these inventions that make dogs’ lives easier.

nrhatch - May 30, 2012

And it’s so easy, even a child can “bike the dog.” ๐Ÿ˜€

5. Tokeloshe - May 30, 2012

Well done!

nrhatch - May 30, 2012

Your dogs would love it! Mike’s made specially designed leashes for wheelchairs and Segways . . . maybe he could make one to hitch to your ATV. ๐Ÿ˜›

6. Andra Watkins - May 30, 2012

That is an excellent idea. If I’d had one of those when I had Jazzmine, I might’ve been able to keep up with her.

nrhatch - May 30, 2012

The Great Danes we had growing up would have LOVED to run around the circle with us on our bikes.

Just have to be wary of HOT pavement on pup’s paws.

7. granny1947 - May 30, 2012

Oh my word…I WANT one!!!

nrhatch - May 30, 2012

Great way to exercise our canine companions, Granny.

Mike does ship overseas . . . but I’m not sure if he is shipping to South Africa yet. If you need assistance after looking around the website, let me know and I’ll check with him directly.

8. barb19 - May 30, 2012

The bike tow-leash is such a simple, but clever idea; I’m sure it will be very popular world wide. I love riding my bike and if my dog was younger, I’d certainly buy one.

nrhatch - May 30, 2012

He has shipped a few to Australia . . . so you might see a dog flying by one day.

When they get a new puppy to train, they take it very slow and easy, letting the dog set the pace ~ as the puppies mature, they tend to speed up . . . happy to run wild and free.

9. kateshrewsday - May 30, 2012

The leash looks great! In the forest Mac runs solo alongside Phil when he runs or the family on bikes…but it would be really useful for urban areas.

nrhatch - May 30, 2012

Yes! Or anywhere that the dog has to stay on a leash. It can be fastened to a bike (or switched from one bike to another) in just a minute or so. And, if not being used, it clips out of the way.

10. Maggie - May 30, 2012

Ooh, cool. I wish I had a dog big enough to bike with.

nrhatch - May 30, 2012

Even small dogs like it . . . it bends to adapt to their height. But, of course, most people can walk fast enough for small dogs to get plenty of exercise. It’s larger breeds that really benefit.

11. Perfecting Motherhood - May 30, 2012

I don’t have dogs but that seems like a really good idea, as I often see the dangerously dangling leash. I can’t believe nobody thought about this before!

nrhatch - May 30, 2012

There are other bike tow leashes on the market . . . but they have issues with tipping, tangling, etc.

12. Jas - May 31, 2012

Very interesting. Safe for the dogs and owners

nrhatch - May 31, 2012

Exactly. Necessity is the mother of invention. Mike wanted to ride the bike to walk the dogs and couldn’t find anything safe enough . . . so he built one from scratch.

Jas - May 31, 2012

Kudos to him for that.

13. Three Well Beings - May 31, 2012

I have a friend who trains guide dogs, too. It takes a lot of love and devotion, but it’s a wonderful service! The tow leash is a great invention! I wish your brother much success! I would think there’s a big market for such an item, too! Debra

nrhatch - May 31, 2012

I’ve loved all the service dogs they’ve trained. It’s sad saying good-bye to them after 1-2 years of training, but several have gone on to provide valuable service.

14. jannatwrites - May 31, 2012

What a neat idea. I hope he does well with selling it!

nrhatch - May 31, 2012

It’s like blogging . . . there are days with lots of “hits” and others when it’s slow going. ๐Ÿ˜€

15. eof737 - May 31, 2012

What a cool idea. Good for him! ๐Ÿ™‚

nrhatch - May 31, 2012

Thanks, E! His dogs have enjoyed being about to put their metal to the pedal. ๐Ÿ˜€

16. Booksphotographsandartwork - June 1, 2012

These are wonderful inventions! Last year for snorty I would freeze big bowls of water and leave them in his water bowl. I filled up anything and everything that I could fit in the freezer and took it out several times a day.

The bike leash thing is really neat! I will show my daughter as she rides a bike but not me. And my dog likes to chase bikes, no thanks.

nrhatch - June 1, 2012

That’s a great idea, Linda. I’m sure that Snorty appreciated your attention to detail.

It’s very easy to attach to bikes ~ there’s a video on the website.

17. Rufus' Food and Spirits Guide - June 2, 2012

Good idea, but no way would my dogs wear those booties!

nrhatch - June 2, 2012

I cracked up at the video of the dog slapping around in those booties. I could see them slip-sliding away.

But wearing them might feel good on HOT pavement.

18. Karen - June 4, 2012

Love the BikeTowLeash! Passing this on to my friend who has two(!) boxers ~ and he’s training for Triathlon, too, so I can see “getting 3 birds with one stone” here! ๐Ÿ™‚

I really got a kick out of the Puppy Handle coat, too! TeeHee!

happy monday all y’all!

nrhatch - June 4, 2012

Excellent! What a great way to train for a Triathlon . . . while exercising the boxers. ๐Ÿ˜€

19. cuhome - June 5, 2012

One of those “…now, why didn’t I think of that?” ideas!! Great one!

nrhatch - June 5, 2012

Thanks, Janet. Necessity is the mother of invention . . . he needed a bike tow leash that worked, so he made one.
