You’re Published . . . Now What? May 8, 2012

One reason I’m not focused on getting published is because I’m a writer, not a marketer or promoter. 

Selling my work to an agent, a publisher, or the public is not how I want to spend my limited time on the planet.

I don’t want to hold book signings, walk door to door, or sell store to store. 

Once I’ve written something, I want to move on to the next thing.

Perhaps I’ll publish posthumously when demands on my time are fewer . . .

And I don’t have to worry about losing my anonymity. 

Ah, well, we’ll cross that bridge when we get to it. 

In the meantime, for those of you who HAVE published a book or two or three (and who obviously have more motivation than me), here are two articles you might be interested in reading:

Nancy Curteman, the blogger behind Global Mysteries, is writing a series of novels featuring Lysi Weston as she solves mysteries around the globe ~ the Wild West, Australia, South Africa . . . hey, what about Scotland? 

Imagine Lysi wandering heather-clad hills and discovering a kilt-clad Scot with an empty bottle of Scotch beside him . . . DEAD. 

Was he poisoned with liquor?  Or was it . . . the Haggis?     

Kristen Lamb’s blog is also a gold mine of information for recently and to-be-published authors who need additional marketing ken. 

Selling Tip #1 ~ You must toot your own horn. 

Or, if you really want to garner attention at the next Book Fair . . . play the bagpipes! 

And wear a kilt!

Let’s practice. 

If YOU have published a book or e-book of ANY genre that is currently for sale somewhere in cyberspace, please include a one or two line summary  of the book’s premise in the comments below.  Add a link for interested readers to follow and find more  information about you and/or the book.

Off the top of my head, look for comments and links from:  Vivian (Show Me How), Christine (Dancing in Heaven), Marie (Beyond Inspiration), Nancy (Lysi Weston series), William (two novels ~ titles below), Renee (Invisible No More & Saving The Best For Last).

But why stop there? 

If you’ve made progress on a WIP (work in progress) and are starting to “shop it around” . . . share that with us as well.

No book?  No problem. 

Tell us about your writing blog, your brand new photographic blog, your painting blog, your cooking blog, your quilting blog, etc.   

C’mon . . . toot your horns!

This is an interesting view point. The line that stood out for me was “Toot your own horn”.
I have a friend who has written an ebook and has had it published in hardbook form as well.
I was drolling on one day about how I needed to get out of the house and get a job…etc…and he throws this “proposal” out to me (he lives in AL, I live in PA). He said he would ship me a bunch of his books, business cards and any supplies I might need and I could go to the various places in my area that would be interested in my book (It was a baby boomer humor book-he thought the assisted living and senior communities would be good places).
Are you kidding me? No. I told him thank you but I’m not a salesman. I don’t have those qualities. I felt alittle used for the moment. I mean, he has a computer obviously, and he lives in the south. I’m sure there are MANY retirement communities and assisted living residents that he could tout his book too. But from what he’s told me over the months, he’s never done any of that. I told him I could do what I could on the computer for him, but I wasn’t going to be a door to door salesman. He said he would pay me 50%. Still, it’s HIS book, HE should sell it himself.
I know what it’s like to try to promote something on the internet. It’s not easy. Especially when the market is flooded with the same thing you have. Persistence is the key. Almost being a pain in the arse.

Maybe. He seemed indignant when I told him no thank you. Honestly, though, I don’t like living here so I didn’t have any real inspiration to want to canvass his book to the local centers. If it was in my old hometown, then I wouldn’t have thought twice about it.

I’ve been published in a few anthologies. . . essays and poetry. Once each book arrived, I glanced at it (briefly), stuck it on my bookcase, and went back to writing. 😀

The same thing happens when something I’ve written finds its way into a newspaper or magazine ~ I look it over, stick it in a file, and turn my attention back to the JOURNEY of writing.

Painting is the same. Artists spend their weekdays painting and their weekends sitting in tents at Art Festivals to sell their work.

I don’t have the “selling gene” in me . . . except for the “once in a blue moon” yard sale.

The truth about publishing is that you do have to market yourself. Every single day. I tell people that all the time. Finding satisfaction in blogging or in non-published writing is a great way to nuture the creative spirit. But, that said, there sure is a thrill to be had when we see our name in print or when someone says, “Wow, I read your book!” It’s an even greater thrill when the person isn’t related to us.

If I wrote a book, like yours, that I felt would truly BENEFIT those who read it . . . I would find it easier to strap on my “selling shoes.” 😉

I like your philosophy – it looks like you write because you love writing, and not because you want to make a name for yourself or because you see writing as a way of getting rich. If you write for love, then by writing you already fulfill your desires and your destiny. The rest is up to God to take care of.

Yes. It’s the JOURNEY of writing that keeps me at the keyboard with no pre-determined destination in mind.

I’m just letting the path unfold before me.

Of course, IF a compelling story like Harry Potter, Nanny McPhee, Mary Poppins, or Peter Pan surfaced, I’d probably feel compelled to share it with others. 😀

I was invited to a book signing but, but, with the recent hearing loss, I couldn’t see myself interacting with a crowd, but it’s okay, I am appreciative of the opportunity!:) And, wow, thank you for opening your blog to share our work!

“Beyond Inspiration” is a compilation of musings, affirmative prayers and affirmations that are spiritual but without dogma. It’s a handy book to use daily to awaken the sacred within you.

I think I’m with you on this. I seemed to get my satisfaction with a few published academic chapters…and even those were co-written. It was fun to see my name in print. But my friends who have published their own work have had to work so hard for it I figured they had some kind of “fire” I just don’t have. I love to write, but the idea of the promotion just doesn’t sit with me. My friends each found that their publishing house launched one party and one book signing, and then expected them to book all their next events. I admire those who really want to pursue the life of published author, but it is not easy! Debra

It used to be that the hardest part of writing was sitting down to write. Now, that’s the “fun” part of the process . . . followed up with the on-going effort to sell those words.

Like you, it’s a “fire” I just don’t have. Blogging is enough for me . . . at least for NOW. (And what else is there?)

I write because I enjoy writing.
I play the piano because I enjoy playing the piano.
I paint because I enjoy painting.

The destination (to me) is far less important than enjoying the journey from HERE to there.

Sometimes I don’t really think publication is the right thing for me. I dislike marketing, promoting and talking about myself or my writing. I love writing just for writing’s sake – just to tell a story and get it out of my head and in a more “concrete” form on paper.

You’re wise to consider your motivation for writing, Maggie.

I’ve seen many who are anxious to get an agent, then a publisher, then see their book in print, then sell more copies . . . and they seem perpetually dissatisfied with the process.

They believe they will be happier as soon as they reach the “next rung on the ladder” (and they are . . . but only for about 5 minutes).

Sometimes the effort and climb is worth it. Other times, it’s not. We need to evaluate what WE really want from life.

Over the years that I have been writing, I have discovered that the real secret to getting published is to submit something for publication. Not doing so, at least so far, hasn’t worked for me. I might decide to go another route. . .

Thanks, Nancy – it was great to learn about all these books that people may or may not be marketing.

I love writing. I don’t love selling, promoting, bragging or tooting.

An artist friend challenged me the other day – “So, what now, Amy? You’ve proven you can blog. What next? How are you going to stretch that creative streak?”

Do I need a stretch right now? I thought.

Another blogger told me about a link where blogs can be assessed to see what someone would pay to own it.

But I didn’t start my blog with a view to selling it! I thought.

I’m heading for a transition, but it’s not selling my writing! 😀

Everyone I hear who gets published complains about how my self-marketing they have to do while the publisher does nothing to help. I think that’s why so many people now self-publish. Why cut so much of your royalties for a publisher who won’t do anything to sell your book? But I understand self-publishing has its own issues too. Nothing’s perfect!

Writing, for me, is sort of like planting seeds in my garden… I don’t know why I have to do it, but it thrills me to no end when I see a sprout emerge from a seed–even if it doesn’t bloom! I had fun planting it! And it wouldn’t even be a sprout, if I hadn’t planted the seed! 🙂
