The Reciprocators March 3, 2012

170px-alice_par_john_tenniel_30I’m sure if you have a kid, work with kids, or have ever been a kid, you’ve heard of the book series, The Borrowers.

This post has to do with the counterpart of borrowers . . . reciprocators.

Reciprocators reciprocate.
It’s what they do best.

Tiggers bounce.
Reciprocators reciprocate.

If you do something for them, they make haste to reciprocate by doing something for you.

The Nature vs. Nurture guys are undecided as to whether reciprocators are made or born.  I suspect they reciprocate post-haste because they are afraid they will be hit by a bus while their karmic debt is misaligned.

But that’s only a working theory and there may be much more to reciprocation than meets the gift-horse-in-the-mouth.

I first focused on the genus Reciprocator Reciprocatus  while culling my Christmas Card list one year.

I realized that I preferred not to kill quite so many trees to send holiday greetings to people whose faces I could no longer recall without thumbing through our compulsively well-organized photo albums.

So . . . I decided NOT to send cards out as early as normal. I adopted a “wait and see” approach to our holiday missive.  Instead of being the first greeter out of the gate, I played it coy by speaking only when spoken to.

In short, I became (drum roll, please) an honorary temporary member of the band of holiday elves known as the Payback Queens . . . I became a reciprocator!

Xmas-CatSure enough, the strategy worked!

A full 47.3% of people I no longer cared to hear from never got around to “reciprocating” that year because I had not set the greeting card snowball in motion!

Huzzah!   More time for the people and things that matter!

Aah . . . that’s better!

How about you?

Do you know any reciprocators?  People out to even up the score with a tit for each tat . . . or a tat for each tit? (Does that sound vaguely sexual to you too?)

Stay tuned . . . One Upmanship coming soon!
