“Sweet Days” Meets “Sunny Daze” February 1, 2012

We’re headed to Venice!

Florida, not Italy.

Venice, a charming town just south of Sarasota, hugs the Gulf Coast.

The Venice Gondolier Sun, a local newspaper, invites comparisons to its sister city in Italy . . . despite the complete absence of gondoliers or canals for them to traverse.

On September 12, 2001, FBI agents arrived in Venice to investigate three  hijackers in the September 11 attacks ~ Mohamed Atta, Marwan Al-Shehhi, and Ziad Jarrah.

The trio lived in Venice while  enrolled in the Florida Flight Training Center of Huffman Aviation, and took flying lessons at the Venice Municipal Airport.

Atta’s stay in Florida is explored in the book, Welcome to Terrorland by Daniel Hopsicher, and in the video “Mohamed Atta & The Venice Flying Circus.”

We do not plan to visit the airport . . . or enroll for flying lessons.

We do plan a blogging meet-up with Pixie (Sweet Days Under The Oaks) and her husband who drove down here for a brief respite from winter in Misery.

Oops, Missouri.  My bad.

We plan to sit poolside and chat while munching on the world’s best chocolate chip cookies from Yoder’s Amish Restaurant.

If we feel particularly motivated, we’ll walk across the street to the beach.

Aah . . . that’s better!

1. Rufus' Food and Spirits Guide - February 1, 2012

Hopefully you won’t encounter agents on your trip. We were just watching a movie the other day and they said Venice, Italy. Well duh, they were talking about Europe. We thought the explanation was funny.

nrhatch - February 1, 2012

Hmm . . . do they say the same about “Paris, France” or “London, England”?

Given some of the pedestrian interviews I’ve seen over the years . . . I’m not surprised that they spelled it out. Some people think that Mickey Rooney was President and Ronald Reagan was a ball player. 😆

2. Carl D'Agostino - February 1, 2012

And Florida’s Venice canals do not smell like sewers and cesspools like over there.

nrhatch - February 1, 2012

I agree, Carl. Sweet smelling place. Venice Italy is NOT calling my name . . . too damp/wet/soggy for me. 😎

3. Sharon Lippincott - February 1, 2012

Your version of Venice sounds so much more manageable to me than the one across the ocean, even aside from the smells. Enjoy your time there!

nrhatch - February 1, 2012

Thanks, shall do! This is my third blogging “meet up” ~ Jeanne, Renee, and now Pixie. YAY!

BTW: I saw your comment to me on Suzicate’s blog. If you are interested in seeing the vision board I completed last week: check out my post Enjoy It All!

Have FUN with it!

4. granny1947 - February 1, 2012

You have to walk on that beach ….it looks wonderful!

nrhatch - February 1, 2012

I expect that we will put our toes in the sand at some point. The beaches down here are hard to resist. 😎

5. suzicate - February 1, 2012

Sounds like a lovely plan, no matter which Venice you are visiting.

nrhatch - February 1, 2012

Wonderful day . . . had a lovely visit with Pix and her delightful husband, talked, ate cookies, talked, drank wine, talked and walked on the beach.

Let me know when you and Dirt Man want to fly south, Suzi. 🙂

6. thirdhandart - February 1, 2012

Relax poolside, have lots of fun on the beach and tell Pix “Hi!” for me. Oh, and the winter weather in Missouri is still miserable so you two lovely ladies enjoy the warm Florida sunshine as much as possible for me. Take care!

nrhatch - February 1, 2012

Thanks, Theresa! We soaked up enough Florida sunshine for YOU too! Hope that Spring arrives in short order.

Guess that depends upon what Phil the groundhog has to say tomorrow morning. 😉

7. kateshrewsday - February 1, 2012

Hurrah! Have a wonderful time!

nrhatch - February 1, 2012

Lovely day . . . just lounging around while chatting about this, that, and the other thing. We’re trying to convince them to stop by and see us on their drive North.

Fingers crossed.

8. Andra Watkins - February 1, 2012

Nancy, enjoy your relaxing break. Eat a cookie for me.

nrhatch - February 1, 2012

Thanks, Andra. These cookies are probably not on your list of sweet treat . . . but they are delicious if you ever “bend the rules.” 🙂

9. Tokeloshe - February 1, 2012

You have to get your toes wet 😉

nrhatch - February 1, 2012

Thanks, Tok! None of us dipped our toes in the water . . . but it was beautiful walking beside the turquoise sea.

10. Paula Tohline Calhoun - February 1, 2012

Jealous once again – but also happy for you and Pixie! I’m still hoping to make my way down your way and I expect a lot more than chocolate chip cookies – but I’ll take ’em! You buy those, and I’ll bring the rest!

Have fun in the sun!

nrhatch - February 1, 2012

One of these days you’ll take a long enough break from having surgery to head south with Ashley. We’ll make sure we have plenty of treats on hand when you do.

In addition to chocolate chip cookies today, we had Oatmeal Whoopie Pies! Whoopee!

Paula Tohline Calhoun - February 2, 2012

Whoop-tee-doodle! Sounding better and better. . .

nrhatch - February 2, 2012

I’m thinking a Greek Feast with feta, olives, tabbouli, hummus, pita, and OUZO! 😀

Paula Tohline Calhoun - February 4, 2012

Whoops! Two problems with that menu! Unless the olives are ripe, I do not like them, and I’m not a huge fan of olives, period. Ouzo sounds like a good idea, but it has the drawback of being licorice-flavored, something I can’t abide. But, the other menu items sound FABULOUS! I’m in. Feta, tabbouli, hummus, pita. . .yum. . .I can taste it already. Let’s have a nice full-bodied wine, perhaps a cab sauvignon, or something similar with the meal – then after we get on to the harder stuff. . . Rum, rum, or rum – any of those would be great! 😆

Paula Tohline Calhoun - February 4, 2012

Oh! And Rum would also be nice. . .mixed with about anything, or by itself – whatever. And I also like rum. I hope I don’t sound like an alcoholic. I actually have a drink maybe as often as twice a year, but I really enjoy what I do drink, and I manage to stay sober enough to remember that I enjoyed it. And I also like rum.

nrhatch - February 4, 2012

And we’ll play . . . RUMI~KUBE! 😉

Paula Tohline Calhoun - February 4, 2012

Sounds perfect! Love fRUM me to you! 😆

11. Booksphotographsandartwork - February 1, 2012

I would say run not walk. That is such a beautiful sight! Have fun.

nrhatch - February 1, 2012

Gorgeous day for our visit, Linda. Pix and her husband are a delight . . . so glad we had the chance to meet them face to face.

12. jannatwrites - February 1, 2012

How fun! I’m glad you got to meet another blogging buddy and had a nice visit (and chocolate chip cookies.)

nrhatch - February 2, 2012

We were joking about cyber identities . . . and not knowing if someone was “really real” until we met them face to face.

She’s REAL!

After the cookies, we enjoyed some wine from Missouri ~ Pix and J brought Stone Hill Pink Catawba and Stagswood Red with them and sent some home with us. Lively wines.

13. You Were Born To Succeed - February 1, 2012

Sounds like Paradise to me. Especially in winter. Way to go!

nrhatch - February 2, 2012

Thanks, Nancy. This is my kind of Paradise ~ in all 4 seasons. As soon as we got here, I knew I was HOME.

Yesterday, we spent time chatting about what we enjoy about FL (lots of stuff) and what doesn’t appeal to us (the threat of hurricanes). Thus far, the “good” outweighs the “bad” by significant measure.

14. Cindy - February 1, 2012

Have a fab time, Nancy. LMAO @ Misery 😉

nrhatch - February 2, 2012

We had FUN! Hope to see Pix and her husband again before they leave. Fingers crossed.

15. souldipper - February 2, 2012

Have a great time, Nancy. Take photos!

nrhatch - February 2, 2012

We took photos of Pix and her husband, but we were too busy talking the rest of the time to snap photos.

The conversation flowed easily . . . even before we’d had the first sip of wine. 😎

16. Team Oyeniyi - February 2, 2012

Yes, please take photos!

nrhatch - February 2, 2012

Oops! We forgot to take photos until we were leaving . . . when we took a couple snapshots of them and they of us.

I’ll have to do a beach walk soon and snap photos to share.

17. Tilly Bud - February 2, 2012

I would LOVE to meet fellow bloggers here in Manchester.

nrhatch - February 2, 2012

Have you met SammyDee ~ Manchester Meanders?

The two of you could start a bloggers convention and have a rip roaring time of it. 😀

18. Tilly Bud - February 2, 2012

Hit ‘send’ before I said, ‘Enjoy!’

nrhatch - February 2, 2012

Thanks! We did.

19. Victoria-writes - February 2, 2012

Sounds lovely, I’m jealous. Have a lovely time!

nrhatch - February 2, 2012

Thanks, Vix. Life now is EASY and BREEZY . . . but the climb to get here required a fair amount of stamina. 😉

Stick with your new financial plan so that when you are OLD~er (like us) you have a bit more flexibility about where to live and what to do.

20. sweetdaysundertheoaks - February 2, 2012

Good Morning Nancy! We had a great time yesterday! Most excellent company, great conversation, laughing, chocolate chip cookies and oatmeal whoopie pies, a little sweet Missouri wine and a walk on the beach! I mean, who could ask for more? We were a long way from the old state of Misery!! Nancy you are a wonderfully special lady and your BFF is a sweet sweet guy! I hope he doesn’t mind me calling him sweet 🙂 Thanks to both of you for driving down to Venice. After you two left the little place felt suddenly very empty. Enjoy your day today you two and I am thinking “it’s good to be happy”.

nrhatch - February 2, 2012

Hi Pix! Thanks for starting my day on such a delightful note. I shared it with BFF and we’re all agreed . . . he is a sweet sweet guy. So is J!

“It’s good to be happy” . . . and “it doesn’t take much to make us happy ~ good company, conversation, laughing, cookies, whoopie pies . . . and a little sweet Missouri wine.

Of course, it helps if there is a beach in close proximty. 😉

Keep our invite in mind as you head North. We’d love to have you stop by to check out our digs. We’ll give you the Grand Tour ~ all 3 rooms! 😉

Enjoy the rest of your stay. Be Here Now. _/!\_

21. Tammy - February 2, 2012

I love blogging meet-ups. Had one in UT last week with MuffinTalk and it was such a great time.

nrhatch - February 2, 2012

Yay! Muffin Talk doesn’t ring a bell with me . . . does she know the Muffin Man . . . who lives on Drury Lane? 😉

I’m sure that you and I will meet up one of these days ~ we’ll eat an entire head of roasted cauliflower in one sitting!

22. klrs09 - February 2, 2012

Lucky, lucky you — that sounds like heaven. Even if it’s not Italy. Interesting bit about the three terrorists.

nrhatch - February 2, 2012

Yes, something I did not know until I read up on Venice yesterday to look for its claim to fame . . . or infamy.

23. spilledinkguy - February 2, 2012

Ha! Misery! Hilarious!
Actually I shouldn’t laugh too hard (the past few days have been beautiful, here)…
nothing like inf Florida, though, I’m sure!
Have a wonderful trip, Nancy!

nrhatch - February 2, 2012

So glad that you’ve had some nice weather, Bob.

I have friends who adore the crisp cool temps of fall and winter and even enjoy the snowfall. In contrast, when we lived up north, my mood dropped with the temperatures.

I’m definitely a warm weather girl.

24. Hotly Spiced - February 2, 2012

Well, I’ve learnt something new. I thought there was only one Venice, that being the one in Europe. Have fun catching up with your blogging friend.

nrhatch - February 2, 2012

Thanks, HS! We enjoyed the meet up ~ nice to put a real live face to a blog.

25. scholarshipwriter - February 2, 2012

I saw you comment about the death penalty on another blog. I wrote an essay about the death penalty for a scholarship I’m applying for. Can you check out my blog and leave a comment? Thanks.

Blog address is http://scholarshipessays.wordpress.com/

nrhatch - February 2, 2012

If you’re interested in my thoughts on the death penalty . . . along with other arguments pro and con:

26. sufilight - February 2, 2012

Have a lovely time! A town with a name like “Venice” has to be fun. 🙂

nrhatch - February 2, 2012

It’s quiet compared to Venice Beach, California and more sandy than Venice, Italy . . . we had a fine time. 😀

27. jeanne - February 3, 2012

I would love a getaway to Venice…Florida! Just think no baggage claim or TSA to deal with just cookies and sand…aaahhh that’s better!

nrhatch - February 3, 2012

Well said, Jeanne. Cookies and sand suits me to a “T.” These days, we roam less and enjoy home more. Yay for finding beauty in our own backyards.

28. bluebee - February 4, 2012

What amazed me about those flying lessons is that apparently they showed no interest in learning to land a plane – you would think that would have aroused suspicion…

nrhatch - February 4, 2012

I know, right?!

Either our intelligence is not so intelligent . . . or they looked the other way because powerful people wanted us to go to war.

29. eof737 - February 4, 2012

Now that is what I would describe as the good life. Enjoy! 😉

nrhatch - February 5, 2012

Thanks, E!

30. pix & kardz - February 7, 2012

How fun! Hope you have (had? Or is it still will have?) a great time!

nrhatch - February 7, 2012

Had. Pix is winging her way home to Missouri today. But a little bird tells me that they’ll be back soon. 😉
