Ever wanted to know who’s commenting the most on your blog and what posts they are commenting on?
Now your Site Stats can tell you.
The new Comments panel in your Site Stats provides three tabs: Top Commenters, Most Commented, and a Summary of comments on your blog.
If your blog has fewer than 1000 total comments, your comment stats are based on all comments made since you started your blog.

Can you tell me Nancy what ‘they’ do with all these stats figures.. and what does the ‘like’ button do. As far as I can see very little so I would appreciate the wisdom of your experience
Some people press the “like” button instead of leaving a comment ~ it’s their calling card to let you know they stopped by and read your post. 😀
Most of the stats are for us to use in evaluating whether to keep heading in the same direction . . . or switch gears.
Considering how much time I spend staring at stats you’d think I did better with numbers in school! I’m sure hope there won’t be a quiz… (I can’t find my calculator at the moment)!

Statistics are only valuable in monitoring QUANTITY . . . not QUALITY. As such, they are worth a cursory view at best.
I think quality over quantity counts. I got in trouble in Prob & Stat in school because I was asked: ‘if you’re in a dark room and reach to get socks from a drawer with 2 pair of white and 4 pair of black, what are the odds you will get white socks?’
I said, “100 percent.”
Prof frowned and asked me how I’d possibly arrived at that calculation.
I said, “I would turn the light on first.”
It was largely downhill from there that semester. Also: apologies for my blog post today’s treatment of vegetarians. I didn’t mean you.
Bwahaha! I would turn on the light first too . . . unless it was a real “dark room” for developing photographs and I didn’t want to expose the film.
But if it was a real “dark room” I wouldn’t keep my socks in there. 😆

stats, stats, and more stats….I don’t pay attention to those things, hmm…if I could just figure out who dropped their subscription, LOL! Between WP and FB, I have a difficult time keeping up with all the changes. Sometimes, I feel like it’s changed just as soon as I get the hang of it, yet I must continue or be swallowed by changes all around me. Yes, even I am learning to live with change.
I don’t ignore them completely . . . but I do NOT blog by the numbers. We can get way too caught up in:
# of posts
# of comments
# of subscribers
# of visitors
When we are enjoying the journey . . . life is a success. 😀
This is a timely post since I started the writer’s campaign platform. I have increased my traffic but not the quality of comments. Most everyone is just saying hi. Not that I knock it but am waiting to see if the campaign is going to give me quality as well.
Right now I’m working on a story challenge for my next blog.
My question is whether these people will stick around. 🙂
I guess I can I learn that from these stats.

I believe the best way to reach an audience is to enjoy the journey and offer quality posts.
Ah, so this explains all the comments you made today, trying to bolster the ratings you smart thing! I plan to leave about 30 comments just on this post to get higher on your list. Ha, I’m kidding but this is pretty cool.

However, sometimes a post does not require an in depth analysis and it’s just nice to leave a one-line comment to let the blogger know you stopped by their blog and read their post. I initially thought this new gizmo was a good idea, but a nice glass of wine clears the mind and now I’m in two minds about this new gimmick by wordpress 🙂
I conducted a search on wordpress the other day using the key word “Portugal”. However, page 2 to 100 presented exactly the same blogs. I would personally prefer if they rectify gremlins like this. Great for the 8 blogs listed on 100 pages but not great for the rest of the Portugal bloggers….hmm sorry, turned this into a pet rant! LOL 🙂

I agree with you, PiP! There is no formulaic way to evaluate comments ~ sometimes people do just want to say “hey, I stopped by to see what you had to say.”
I’m happy with any and all stats WP offers us . . . but I refuse to get caught up in the “BLOGGING BY NUMBERS” game.
The value of SLTW to me is the daily enjoyment I get from writing posts and interacting with readers . . . NOT in the # of comments, visits, posts, or subscribers.

This is good for me mainly because I want to take special care to support the blogs of people who support my blog and to keep a network on the blog roll.

I spend very little time focused on stats . . . since I don’t blog by the numbers. But it’s nice to know they’re there IF we need them.

Nancy, thanks for pointing out the new stat box…it could have been days or even weeks before I would have scrolled that for down on my stats page. And then it would have been totally by accident.
I subscribe to the WP news so that I can keep up with the changes . . .
Of course, sometimes the change appears BEFORE the post (like with the recent change to the “subscription button”). 😀
Hey, Nance – I have a puzzle. I received a number of “like” notices, through email, from people in Germany and Israel. None of them, however, show up on the “like” line-up on the blog they “liked”. I clicked all of their links to look at the gravatar. There was no photo on any of them.
As I write this, I’m wondering if I’ve ever seen a “like” on any blog that does not have a photo.
Just a “hmmmm” and maybe you have an angle on this.
Sorry, I can’t help you. I don’t get “like” notifications via e-mail ~ I turned off that feature.
My best guess ~ they are caught in the Spam filter before they show up in the “like” line up . . . but after the e-mail has been sent.
I’ve had that problem this week.
I wonder WHO they are and WHY they do it. Very odd.

I’m glad you posted this. I just noticed this new feature tonight and I wondered how long it’s been there. I am sooo relieved to find out that it hasn’t been there for two months!

Interesting statistics aren’t they? I also noticed an ehancement to my theme as it now has a byline for the author.
Has your theme changed at all?
If it’s changed, I haven’t noticed the change. Maybe I’ll go have a peek behind the dashboard and tinker under the hood. 😉
I’ll check it out, but I’m not sure I’ll use it that much. For the type of blogging that I do, I’m not so sure that the stats really mean that much other than to let me know that folks do read my blogs. I tend to think that for a business, or freelancers who rely on their blogs and other social networking sights to enhance their businesses, i.e. income, the stats are far more important. For me, I just like to blog and appreciate each and every one who stops by whether it be once or 100 times. My feelings may change in the future as I contemplate doing more with my blogs, but for now I’ll just let the stats be the stats. I’ll take a peek now and then if I feel like it but unless they have a more defined purpose for me. . .
