10 Favorite Songs September 6, 2011

A recent WP Prompt suggested writing A Top Ten List of Favorite Songs.  Here are 10 Favorites that I’ve enjoyed over the years:

1.  SmoothRob Thomas and Santana share the Smooth flowing beat of a song that’s definitely good enough.

2.  Say Hey (I Love You) ~ Awesome song (shades of Santana and Marley) designed to get everyone in hearing range rockin in the dance hall movin’ wit you.

3.  I know what I know ~ I know what I know ~ I sing what I said ~ We come and we go ~ That’s the thing that I keep in the back of my head ~ Who am I to blow against the wind?

4. Dancing in the Moonlight ~ Pick a night with a full moon, grab a friend, some liberal libations, and head outside to do a bit of Dancing in the Moonlight with King Harvest:

5.  If You Want to Sing Out ~ If you want to sing out, sing out. If you want to be free, be free. There’s a million ways to be . . . you know that there are. ~ Cat Stevens:

6.  Dream On ~ Dream until your dreams come true.   Aerosmith

7.  Summer Breeze ~ Whether your summer is just on the horizon (for those living below the equator) or nearing a close (for those above), here’s a bit of Summer Breeze to keep you going:

8.  We May Never Pass This Way Again ~ We May Never Pass This Way Again celebrates our one way ticket through life, reminding us that, although the future’s obscured from view, we must let go of our fear and keep sailing forward:

9.  Anywhere Is ~ As Enya flows seamlessly from stanza to stanza in Anywhere Is, the lyrical stream draws listeners into the moment by moment unfolding of life and all its mysteries ~ secrets unrevealed by night sky, ocean tides, or  shell’s echo.

10.  King Kong Tonight~ Cindy Taylor introduced me to Rhoderic Land and his marvelous song, King King Tonight.  Not only did it make me smile, I heard it dancing in my head all day:

I haven’t heard Smooth for ages, so catchy it’ll be in my head all day now!

nrhatch - September 6, 2011

I can listen to it for hours . . . because it’s so S~M~O~O~T~H. 😎

2. ceceliafutch - September 6, 2011

I had never heard of Rhoderic Land or King Kong Tonight, but here I am at 7am listening to it over and over. . . LOL Love the list and loved King Kong! 🙂

nrhatch - September 6, 2011

Glad you enjoyed it. I felt the same way when I heard if for the first time. There is something about it that just begs for a “replay.”

3. Carl D'Agostino - September 6, 2011

Good choices. I’ve always liked Perry Como’s rendition of “Catch a Falling star…” since early childhood. I thought it would be really cool to catch a star and put it in my pocket but then my mother would beat the crap out of me with the huge wooden salad spoon for burning a hole in my pants.

nrhatch - September 6, 2011

Mine was moonbeams!

Or would you like to swing on a star
Carry moonbeams home in a jar.
And be better off than you are . . .

4. Paula Tohline Calhoun - September 6, 2011

It amazes me – always – how varied the lists can be. When you consider that many of the songs were super sellers (millions sold), it’s hard to believe that at least one song would not be on most people’s list, but so far, I haven’t seen one (haven’t read too many of the lists yet, though!).

Actually, while one or two of the artists on my list might be the same as yours, none of the songs would (or will, if I get the chance to enumerate mine) be. I like all your songs, but they wouldn’t show up on my list, and I am not sure if the list I wrote today would be the same as a list I would put down tomorrow. Music is so subjective and mood-related, that what comes to mind would vary with the day or moment!

i will think about my own list, but if I’m going to stick to my pledge to myself, I will put this out of my mind, and keep working on my other projects. . .so far, so good. It’s almost too much fun, and if I didn’t love blogging so much, and miss my peeps in the blogosphere, I might never come back! But I wil – so don’t get your hopes up! 😆

Thinking about you – and a big hello to all my other peeps who are reading this comment! 😉

nrhatch - September 6, 2011

To clarify . . . this is NOT my Top Ten list of songs. Not even close. This is just 10 songs (out of 100’s!) that I alway enjoy hearing. After getting this ready for posting, I immediately thought of others to include . . .

Al Stewart ~ Year of the Cat
Simply Red ~ Holding back the Years
Eric Clapton ~ Let it Grow & Layla
Skynyrd ~ Freebird
Elton John ~ Philadelphia Freedom
George Harrison ~ All Things Must Pass
Lorenna McKennitt ~ Mummer’s Dance
Joan Armortrading ~ Water With The Wine
Tracey Chapman ~ Tinman/Who Stole Your Heart
Sarah MacLachlan ~ Building a Mystery
Edie Brickell, Sophie B. Hawkins, Dave Matthews, Etc.

And the beat goes on . . .

Glad that you’re enjoying your time away from the blogosphere. Life balance is key!

5. brainrants - September 6, 2011

#1 and #6 woo hoo. Apologies but I am too high strung to get into reggae I think.

Oh, look! A squirrel…

nrhatch - September 6, 2011

Bwahaha!

I like a bit of Marley now and then . . . no woman, no cry. I also like listening to steel drums playing while I’m sipping a pina colada at Trader Vic’s. 😎

6. Judson - September 6, 2011

M Top-10 alltime … wow, that covers a lot of time, LOL.

Currently, I really like Paul Simon’s new one called “Re-write”

… and one guy I think has a big future is Amos Lee with “Windows are Rolled Down”

Right now Adele is my favorite female singer with “Rolling in the Deep”

nrhatch - September 6, 2011

I’m with you there, Justin. As I told Paula, I didn’t even attempt to come up with a Top Ten list of songs ~ creating the list would take forever and would be subject to change based on the moment at hand.

Love Adele’s voice ~ never heard her before. Very smooth!

7. Thorny Rose - September 6, 2011

Love “Smooth,” so sexy. And got a real kick out of the “new guy,” Rhoderic Land. He looks so old school.

A couple of my favorites would be “At Last” performed by Etta James and “Don’t You Know” sung by Della Reese. Also, Enya’s “Marble Halls.” Guess I’m a sucker for love songs….and anything featuring a saxophone.

nrhatch - September 6, 2011

Glad you enjoyed Rhoderic Land. He’s on FB and appreciates meeting new fans.

When I’m in the right mood, I love Etta James, especially “At Last.” Very S~M~O~O~T~H. We have most of Enya’s CD’s and there isn’t a bad song in the bunch ~ Marble Halls is beautiful.

I love listening to a sax riff is the middle of a song . . . one reason why I love Al Stewart’s Year of the Cat (and so many of Springstein’s songs).

8. andalibmarks - September 6, 2011

YAY!!!!!
Good music, Nancy
Really good music!!
*#*

nrhatch - September 6, 2011

I’m looking forward to more of your music series, Andi ~ music can be very revealing of our place in time and space.

9. SuziCate - September 6, 2011

Good songs…summer breeze is in my head now, maybe that’s what I’m wishing for today.

nrhatch - September 6, 2011

That’s a song I recognize in one or two notes . . . and it always makes me smile. In the winter, it makes me long for summer and in the summer it feels like a pat on the back ~ everything’s going to be alright.

10. theonlycin - September 6, 2011

An absolutely fabulous list of songs, Nancy, I have pasted a link on Rhod’s page 🙂

nrhatch - September 6, 2011

Thanks, Cin! His song is a hit with a few visitors today! 😎

11. spilledinkguy - September 6, 2011

That’s an incredibly challenging prompt!
I don’t know that I could ever choose… especially with only 10 spots!
🙂

nrhatch - September 6, 2011

Compiling a Top Ten List would be virtually impossible. That’s why I didn’t even try . . . I just picked 10 songs that always make me smile. 😀

12. Rufus' Food and Spirits Guide - September 6, 2011

Pretty eclectic list there. I love it.

nrhatch - September 6, 2011

Makes me want to do a Favorite FOOD list ~ it would be eclectic too. Consuming the same thing day after day is far too limiting.

13. ElizOF - September 6, 2011

Excellent choices all Nancy! 8)
I am also going to listen to King Kong Tonight as I’ve never heard that song before. Brilliant! 🙂
Eliz

nrhatch - September 6, 2011

Hey! You’re here . . . and I was just around visiting your place.

I’m glad you’re looking forward to the fall, but I’ll hang on to the Summer Breeze for a bit longer. 😎

14. kateshrewsday - September 6, 2011

Great playlist, Nancy 🙂 I love the Paul Simon….and Enya is a favourite of mine…

nrhatch - September 6, 2011

I didn’t plan to do this prompt since (1) I rarely follow the WP prompts and (2) choosing my Top Ten favorite songs would be impossible.

But sharing 10 “random” favorites was easy and fun and gave me a chance to listen to them. 😀

15. Maggie - September 6, 2011

Enya is always an excellent choice.

nrhatch - September 6, 2011

We have most of her CD’s and love them all ~ she’s a talented singer songwriter. She lives in a castle . . . with cats. 😎

16. 2e0mca - September 6, 2011

An Excellent selection Nancy – I still have to trim back from 40-odd to get my 10 together! Best I get on with it 🙂

nrhatch - September 6, 2011

Or just do what I did and pick 10 “random” favorites. 😉

There is no way that I could actually create a Top Ten list of songs. I’m not sure I could even created a Top Ten list of albums.

2e0mca - September 7, 2011

Exactly what I wound up doing 🙂 A slightly more in depth look at your list…

That Carlos Santana track was a great return to the charts for him – love it!

Dancing in the Moonlight – There’s some history behind that one. Only get to hear the Toploader version over here normally! I sometimes wonder if it gave Bruce Springsteen a few ideas for his Dancing in the Dark.

Summer Breeze – A great song, but I have the Isley Brothers cover of it. That made more of a splash in the UK.

That Rhoderic Land track is fun isn’t it 😉

nrhatch - September 7, 2011

When I looked at your list, I realized that while the Beatles, the Rolling Stones, and other mega-bands made it across the pond during the British Invasion, many played to audiences only on one side of that great divide.

17. jeanne - September 6, 2011

Great playlist…is it on your ipod?

nrhatch - September 6, 2011

Nope. I don’t have an ipod. Or a smart phone. Or a Blackberry. Or . . .

Ack! I’m a techno-phobe! 😛

jeanne - September 6, 2011

I am so glad someone is resisting the lure of being connected 24/7. I have a favor to ask…still having problems on the blog.

I havent had a comment on my latest post in over 24 hours, would you mind leaving one so I can see if they are registering.
Thanks in advance. jeanne

nrhatch - September 7, 2011

Glad to help. I had no problem leaving a message today, but when I went by shortly after you posted . . . the post had gone missing.

18. 10 Favourite Songs – Thoughts from Finchley - September 6, 2011

[…] suggestion of a few days back and by a reminder in the shape of Nancy’s 10 Favorite songs I thought I’d better get my act together and list some. With 40 years of music that I enjoy […]

nrhatch - September 6, 2011

Wonderful play list ~ especially enjoyed Steely Dan’s Midnight Cruiser. 😀

19. jannatwrites - September 6, 2011

I’m not familiar with most of the songs you listed, but Smooth is one of my favorites. I just love Rob Thomas’ voice!

I agree with Judson, Adele does have a great voice.

I enjoyed your list! I don’t think I could’ve settled on just ten favorites 😉

nrhatch - September 7, 2011

I couldn’t pick my 10 absolute favorites either. That’s why this is not a Top Ten list . . . it’s just a random selection of 10 songs I always enjoy.

Maybe I’ll do 10 more down the road.

20. Linda - September 7, 2011

I love the moonbeams song. Would you like to swing on a star…

nrhatch - September 7, 2011

That was one of my childhoood favorites.

21. SidevieW - September 7, 2011

Some interesting choices. I love that everyone finds memories in other people’s lists.

IPOD -a great device for having music without lugging around a ton of CDs I have had mine for almost a year and I now wonder what I did without it

nrhatch - September 7, 2011

Favorite songs are like old friends ~ causing us to travel back in time and space to the way we were.

Glad you’re enjoying your ipod.

22. Tilly Bud - September 7, 2011

I don’t know any of these songs, though I’ve heard of some of the artists.

nrhatch - September 7, 2011

With unfamiliar songs, I click “play” for 20-30 seconds to see if the song grabs me ~ that’s how I fell in love with #2 and #10 . . . they got me! 😎

23. Naomi - September 7, 2011

Thanks for sharing, Nancy 🙂 Cool collection, of which I’m only familiar with “Dancing in the Moonlight”. Muct be a gap in my musical education!

nrhatch - September 7, 2011

Some are old and some are new . . . but it may also be a difference in where we live and which artists are featured. When you have a chance, click through a couple of the song. #2 always gets me up on my feet dancing (moonlight optional).

24. MrBillyD - September 8, 2011

In the early 1990’s I attended a Lincoln Center revival of Cole Porter’s 1936 musical “Anything Goes” starring Leslie Uggams. During the performance she sang the song, “I Get a Kick Out of You”, which contains a refrience to the use of an illegal substance.

“Some get a kick from cocaine!
I’m sure that if I took even one sniff
It would bore me terrif-icly too,
But I get a kick out of you.”

When she sang that verse, there was a very uncomfortable silence throughout the entire audience. That song was originally sung in 1936, by Ethel Merman. I wonder what the reaction was then!

nrhatch - September 8, 2011

I wonder why they were uncomfortable . . . because they got a kick from cocaine, or because they didnt? 😆

William D'Andrea - September 12, 2011

Many New Yorkers are overly tolerant people. I think we just weren’t sure how to react.

nrhatch - September 12, 2011

One of my favorite Clapton songs is Cocaine:

25. Tokeloshe - September 9, 2011

Very well done!

Loved King Kong 😉

nrhatch - September 9, 2011

I’m glad you enjoyed. I sent the positive comments about the song to Rhod.
