7 Ways to Celebrate Earth Day April 22, 2011

It’s Earth Day! Time to celebrate this amazing planet that sustains us all:
1. Join Picnic For The Planet, a celebration of the planet we live on, the food it provides and the people we share it with.
2. Watch No Impact Man: The Documentary. No Impact Man and his family reduced their impact on the planet in a number of ways.
Among other things, they: turned off the electricity in their apartment; ate only locally grown food purchased at a nearby farmer’s market and cooked at home on their gas stove; stopped shopping for non-essentials; traded chemical cleaners for natural cleaners (vinegar, baking soda, Borax); stopped eating in restaurants or ordering take-out food; stopped using motorized transportation; and vacationed at a local farm instead of flying or driving to a more “exotic” locale. And they stopped using paper products, including . . . toilet paper!
Ack! I’m willing to reduce, reuse, and recycle, but . . . I’m not giving up toilet paper without a fight.
3. Be Water Wise. Install low flow toilets and flush less often ~ if it’s yellow, let it mellow; if it’s brown, flush it down. Don’t mow too low ~ closely cropped grass requires more water.
4. Sign up to receive Action Alerts. Every day we are bombarded with information ~ good news, bad news, and all around the world news. Let others sift through the info for you. Sign up for Action Alerts and Green Living Tips.
5. Eat Green. Incorporating more fruits and vegetables into your diet is good for your health, and the health of the planet.
6. Reduce, Reuse, Recycle. Simplify your life one step at a time. Make more conscious decisions about spending. Remember Life Is Not One-Size-Fits-All. Focus first on tips that will be EASY to implement and build from there.
7. Get Out!!! And have some FUN! Walk Off Some Weight* Greening Your Life * A Walk in the Waves * Explore the Great Outdoors * Wildlife Gardening with Kids * Pedaling With Pets
HAPPY EARTH DAY!

Lots of great idea. Happy Earth Day to you.
Thanks, Suzi! We went for a walk this morning and plan to picnic at lunch.
I’m with you on the toilet paper issue! But lots of great ideas and links!
Thanks, Rosa.
There is much I am willing to do . . . but going without TP is not on that list. 😀
Speaking of #5, I think it’s time for me to eat a banana. Nice list!
Go for it! Happy Earth Day, Maggie.
I haven’t seen any info on Earth Day here in the UK. Shame on us.
I’ve gotten quite a few e-mails about it from National Wildlife Federation, Sierra Club, Trust for Public Lands, Audubon, etc.
But other than that . . . it’s passed by relatively unnoticed. 😦
I wish I could walk in the waves. Lucky you.
I haven’t walked in the waves for some time. The water is warm enough now that I need to take advantage of our proximity.
Hope you’re enjoying the arrival of Spring in your backyard.
I remember reading somewhere once (about computers giving us a paperless officer) that we will have a paperless office when we have paperless toilets!
We have water restrictions all the time, so we are used to conserving water.
I’m a firm believer that if we do not protect our planet, we won’t have a habitable one for very much longer.
I agree. As Thoreau warned more than 100 years ago: What good is a house if we haven’t got a decent planet to put it on?
Happy Earth Day and here’s to spending some time every day doing something helpful to our environment. 🙂

Or by refraining from doing something harmful.
Hope you have a great Earth Day!
I spent the afternoon outside “communing with nature.”
