SPAM: A Tad More Sophisticated? March 22, 2011

This morning, I had eight SPAM messages waiting for me on SLTW.  Two are worthy of sharing, in pertinent part:

1.  From gwhapokdl (not a typo):

* We simply attempt to be fearful when others are greedy and to be greedy only when others are fearful.

Amy (Souldipper) shared just that thought with me yesterday on Getting A Return On Your Investement:

Ben Graham’s quote makes me think of one of Buffet’s favourites:

“Be fearful when others are greedy and greedy when others are fearful.”

On first reading, I thought Amy meant Jimmy Buffett.

I racked my brain to think of a song containing those lyrics before realizing Amy meant Jimmy’s older brother Warren.

* America will never be destroyed from the outside. If we falter and lose our freedoms, it will be because we destroyed ourselves.

I agree.  It’s time for politicians to climb out of Big Oil’s back pocket.  PLANET before PROFIT.  GREEN before GREED.

2.  From gwfokslpq (not a typo):

* War is an instrument entirely inefficient toward redressing wrong; and multiplies, instead of indemnifying losses.

So true.  When we take an eye for an eye, we don’t right a wrong, we just become increasing blind and short-sighted.

* He who knows nothing is closer to the truth than he whose mind is filled with falsehoods and errors.

By far, my favorite of the four . . . and just the reminder I needed today.

My mind is filled with prejudices.

I pre-judge people, places and things based on my past experiences with them, instead of observing them with alert curiosity right here, right now.

Phase One:  Recognize the habit.
Phase Two:  Develop selective amnesia

An open mind learns more in an hour than a closed mind learns in a year.

No rules.  Just write!

What about you?  Any adages, aphorisms, quotes, or pithy SPAM messages which you’d like to share with us today?

“Seek and ye will remember that you need your glasses before you can do any more seekething.” By the way, that is really a cool picture of you standing next to that statue of George Washington. I did not know he ever was in Hawaii.

nrhatch - March 22, 2011

You recognized George! Did his wooden teeth give him away? 😀

BTW: you won’t have to go to Hawaii to see him . . . he’s on Captiva, just a short hop from your neck of the woods.

2. Cindy - March 22, 2011

At least yours are thought provoking spams, mine tend to be downright abusive … or viagra ads 😦

nrhatch - March 22, 2011

One of these was an ad for Viagra. The other was for Celebrex.

Now I just need one for Sominex.

3. Greg Camp - March 22, 2011

You had another U.S. president at the top of the post–the guy in the red pants. I’m not sure which one he is, they being so much alike lately.

I do wonder how those strange comments in the spam messages get generated. Apparently, fortune cookie writers are looking for extra work these days.

nrhatch - March 22, 2011

Ooh . . . Fortune Cookies.

The best fortune I ever got: “You will live a happy and peaceful life.”

Ah so.

4. Debra - March 22, 2011

my spam tends to be….about ‘coach diaper bags’ or how the ‘dalai lama is a chug a lug king’ offending to me…but this is spam…

I have started to turn my spam into a service that logs spammers and harvesters, and dictionary crackers. I hope to see a slow down on the spam soon since started using this service (free).

oh and yes I did get one for a ‘cliais’ or was that ‘cilais’….I think it is viagra’s opponent. 🙂

I love the WP Spam filter ~ it captures Spam messages until I have time to scroll through them for any nuggets hidden amidst the silt.

Debra - March 22, 2011

yes me too:)

5. Lisa - March 22, 2011

My spam is often too poorly written to even interpret, or in another language. I did get one person yesterday asking why his comments never appeared as he has interesting things to say. Of course, he never says anything that actually applies to the post, so . . .

nrhatch - March 22, 2011

If he asks again, suggest that he start his own blog. Then, he’ll have an appropriate venue to share his interesting observations. 😎

6. souldipper - March 22, 2011

Oh no…now Warren is Big Brother? Well, he’s a good big brother if reports of his humanitarianism are valid.

How on earth did you make the green face? Have I missed a course on emoticons?

nrhatch - March 22, 2011

Classy Rose gave me a cheat sheet. Here it is:

Many thanks, Nancy. I think we need these little guys in our attempts to express!

7. souldipper - March 22, 2011

😳 I think I needed a space. 😎

nrhatch - March 22, 2011

Aren’t they FUN? I love playing around with them. Who came up with such a bright 💡 ❓

8. Penny - March 22, 2011

Spam and telemarketers – what would the world be without them !! Love your blog, the pictures are really good. Very interesting. I will visit again soon, I have your link saved. Happy Blogging ! 🙂

nrhatch - March 22, 2011

Thanks, Penny. I get a kick out of some of the Spam received on SLTW. I rarely get a kick out of telemarketers. 😉

9. eof737 - March 24, 2011

Not bad for spam actually… I usually get links to unmentionable sites, pure gibberish, or God knows what else. At least your spammers are thinking and talking some sense not gibberish. 🙂

Some of the Spam I get isn’t even recognizable as language ~ maybe Dr. Doolittle could translate it, but I can’t. Thought Spam is a nice change of pace. 😀
