220px-Arthur-Pyle_The_Enchanter_Merlin“To do exactly as your neighbors do is the only sensible rule.” ~ Emily Post

Who knew that Emily Post could be so sarcastic?

Wait!

She was being sarcastic, right?

Aah . . . that’s better!

Quentin Crisp said you should never try to keep up with the Joneses, you should drag them down to your level. I don’t think he was being sarcastic …

Love it!

2. Richard W Scott - December 6, 2010

Lemme see if I’ve worked this out. You should drink tea from a fine china cup, little finger extended, and wear a tank-top and baseball hat.
OK. Got it.

nrhatch - December 6, 2010

You forgot the tattoos!!! 😉

3. aardvarkian - December 6, 2010

If I was to follow my Polish neighbours, I’d wear shorts all the time, no matter how bloody cold it is.

nrhatch - December 6, 2010

It’s even too cold in Florida for shorts today. Brrr …

4. Carol Ann Hoel - December 6, 2010

Did Emily Post really say this? I’m trying to hold back my delight! She didn’t, did she?

nrhatch - December 6, 2010

Most of the quotes on Real Simple are accurate. This one surprised me too.

Go Emily!

5. souldipper - December 6, 2010

I have a neighbour who was raised in England who wears bermuda shorts all year round here in Canada. I suspect he still thinks he got on the ship for Australia.

nrhatch - December 6, 2010

I cannot even imagine.

I’m “freezing” in pants, turtleneck, and sweatshirt and it’s still well above freezing ~ but 20 degrees colder than normal.

viewfromtheside - December 7, 2010

how very odd

6. Ollin - December 6, 2010

Haha. Yeah, doing that is just crazy and unreasonable. Just be YOU!

nrhatch - December 6, 2010

We’ve been watching the Spend~Spend~Spend commercials on TV and noticed all the subtle and not-so-subtle messages about what EVERYONE wants and what NO ONE wants:

Diamonds are a girls best friend.
Every girl dreams of diamonds and pearls.
No one wants a simple Christmas.

And I thought, “What the hell is wrong with ME? Why don’t I want diamonds, and pearls, and shoes, and handbags, and gold necklaces, and . . . ”

And then I thought, “Maybe there is nothing wrong with ME.” 😉

7. Lyndatjie - December 7, 2010

Oh my! I think I’m going to revise my view on Emily Post. You GO girl! Who knew she had it in her?

nrhatch - December 7, 2010

Shocked me as well. Quite the eye opening quote and one I felt “destined” to share.

8. viewfromtheside - December 7, 2010

my poor neighbours, copying me could be the death of them all

nrhatch - December 7, 2010

What a trendsetter! You’ve got a killer personality, sounds like! 🙂

9. viewfromtheside - December 7, 2010

ps – the lawyer asking, well that was episode 98, lots of history behind what is happening. the villain was once apparently the hero, and went off the rails as he revealed his real personality

nrhatch - December 7, 2010

Thanks, Sidey.

I thought it was a terrific break for the chapter . . . a cliffhanger with readers waiting (along with his lawyer) to receive an explanation.

10. Naomi Estment - December 7, 2010

Thanks for sharing, Nancy 🙂 & sending you some SA sunshine!

nrhatch - December 7, 2010

Thanks for the sunshine . . . I’m ready for the temps to warm up a bit. I much prefer flips flops and sandals to socks and shoes.

11. Cities of the Mind - December 7, 2010

Love it. What is life without a touch of sarcasm?

nrhatch - December 7, 2010

Sarcasm is, indeed, a powerful tool as we paint with words.
