There is only one trait that marks the writer.  He is always watching.  It’s a kind of trick of the mind and he is born with it. ~ Morley Callahan

Whether or not you write well, write bravely. – Bill Stout

Writers reside in a world of imagination, where creativity reigns.

Writing is the only profession where no one considers you ridiculous if you earn no money. ~ Jules Renard

The profession of book-writing makes horse racing seem like a solid, stable business. ~ John Steinbeck

To succeed in writing, or life, follow the Path of P’s: Purpose, Passion, Patience, and Persistence.

Writing is a solitary occupation.  Family, friends, and society are the natural enemies of the writer.  He must be alone, uninterrupted, and slightly savage if he is to sustain and complete an undertaking. ~ Lawrence Clark Powell

Writing isn’t about making money, getting famous, getting dates, getting laid or making friends. In the end it’s about enriching the lives of those who will read your work, and enriching your own life as well.  It’s about getting up, getting well, and getting over.  Getting Happy, okay? Getting happy. ~ Stephen King

Writing is an on-going dialogue between inner and outer worlds.

May your inner and outer worlds peacefully co-exist.  Namaste.

I love Steinbeck’s quote. It’s so true.

Cindy - November 13, 2010

Yep, me too!

Good quotes, good perspective.

3. nrhatch - November 13, 2010

Thanks, guys!

Have a wonder-filled day overflowing with wonderful words.

4. Maggie - November 13, 2010

Nice quotes. The first one is probably my favorite. So, so true.

Mine too! That’s why it’s #1. 🙂

“Whether or not you write well, write bravely.” – Bill Stout

“Writers reside in a world of imagination, where creativity reigns.”

As to the first, amen! I had to let go of my own expectations of my own writing, just take a deep breath and have at it!I knew I’d never begin to improve until I started proving by doing!

The second is for me the perfect segue to the first, as I misread it the first time as: “Writers reside in a world of imagination, where creativity resigns!” That’s how it feels sometimes too! 😀

Bwahaha! That’s funny!

The world of resignation! 😉

Say what you mean and mean what you say . . . you can smooth out any rough patches down the road.

Hope the operation went well yesterday and that you regain some functionality.

Thanks for the great quotes! I’m going to point out the one Powell, because often I feel like that but then I feel guilty to admit it. It’s not that I don’t love my family friends, its just that sometimes I need them to get out of the way so that I can finish this damn thing {my novel I mean}.

nrhatch - November 13, 2010

Yes! 🙂

When I’m really writing . . . I don’t want to stop to talk on the phone, or answer e-mails, or eat, or breathe, or go to the bathroom.

Time stops and all that exists is a world of words.

Love Stephen King’s quote. Gosh – one could almost feel like a normal human being when reading how other writers feel and think!

I enjoyed the one where “you know you are a writer if your best friend is telling you about the fight with her lover and you’re taking notes.”

nrhatch - November 13, 2010

That’s great!

I often find myself editing conversations in my mind. This week, at a play, I found myself editing the script in my head as the actors delivered their lines. 🙂

8. Tammy McLeod - November 14, 2010

Well, I’m with Souldipper. I love that King quote. It’s true that writers write in their heads. I love the quotes that you’ve put together and they make me want to curl up with a pencil and begin my day.

nrhatch - November 14, 2010

Aah, here’s to having an abundance of time to allow our words to flow . . .

9. andalibmarks - November 15, 2010

Wait, wait, wait!
It’s NOT about getting laid?!
OMG! I quit!

Great post, Nancy.
Very motivating in a weird sort of way.
Makes me want to – jump right back in and have another go!

Bwahaha! Keep writing about leather and lace and see what happens. 😉

I know what you mean. Quotes on writing motivate me too . . .

Quotes on painting make me want to open my eyes and experience the vividness of life.

Quotes on writing make me want to record words and thoughts about what I’ve seen.
