In Full View November 1, 2010

Many “experts” encourage people to set goals and then share them publicly with others.

The rationale being that if we state our goals publicly,  “in full view” of the world, that exposure will increase our motivation to follow through on our intent.

Why should external approval (or disapproval)  increase our motivation to succeed?

Is “avoiding potential embarrassment” (for failing to accomplish what we set out to achieve) more important to us than the goal itself?  If so, why?

Do we need accolades and encouragement from others to feel good about ourselves and our efforts in life?

Exercise gurus advise us that the best way to stick with a new exercise program is to join a class or group.

So that others can “keep us honest.”

Again, the rationale is that we may be willing to let ourselves down, but we don’t want to let our exercise partners down.

I’ve noticed the same advice in connection with NaNoWriMo.

Advocates encourage us to publicly state our intent to write 50,000 words during the month of November to increase the likelihood that we will actually write 50,000 words.

Why should bringing others into the mix impact our success rate?

Why are we so routinely encouraged to rely on external approval (or the fear of disapproval) to maintain motivation to effect change in our lives?

Do we really care more about what others think of our efforts than we care about what WE think of OURSELVES?

Why are we so motivated by the FEAR of having others see us crash and burn?  Is it the result of hard-wiring, or socialization?  Nature or nurture?

Can we retrain ourselves to focus more on internal motivation, and less on what others think about our efforts?  If so, should we?

Personally, when I set a goal, it’s between me and the man in the mirror.

The reflection I see there every day is the only motivation I need to succeed on matters that matter to me.

That reflection also keeps me honest . . . it knows ALL my secrets.

No rules.  Just write!

When we hang on to grudges, the surface of our mind is agitated, white caps churning.

We know no peace.

When we allow transgressions to fade away, stillness returns and provides a reflective surface in which we can truly see the world.
