Fun with Math: Laugh Calculator September 1, 2010

We can all use a bit more laughter in our life, right?

Here’s a Laugh Calculator to help get you started.

1. Pick the number of times (1-9) you would like to laugh out loud today.

E.g., 9

2.  We don’t want to be stingy with laughter.  Multiply your number by 2.

9 x 2=18

3.  Hmm . . . still not enough laughter.  Add 7 more to the mix.

9 x 2 = 18 + 7 = 25

4.  Now, multiply your laugh quota by 50!  Yes, 50!

9 x 2 = 18 + 7 = 25 x 50 = 1250

No calculator?  Multiply by 100, and divide by 2.

5.  If your birthday already passed this year, add 1660.  If not, add 1659.

9 x 2 = 18 + 7 = 25 x 50 = 1250 + 1660 = 2910

6.  Now, subtract the 4-digit year you were born.

9 x 2 = 18 + 7 = 25 x 50 = 1250 + 1660 = 2910 – 1989 = 921

Laugh all you want . . . that’s the goal!  Besides, 1989 was a very good year.

7.  If your math skills are up to snuff, and you are 99 years of age or less, you should have a 3 digit number:  e.g., 921

* The first digit is how many times you wanted to laugh out loud ~

* The last two digits are your current age ~ 21

If you are over 99 years of age, this won’t work.

Sorry.

But given your obvious longevity, you already know how to laugh, right?

Calvin figured out how it works . . . can you?

I’ll wait to hear how Calvin figured it out. You’re better at math than I am I think. I used 3 and got 368.

If you compare my laugh calculator with the starting point (Paula’s chocolate calculator) . . . you may see a few clues.

Loreen Lee - September 1, 2010

Didn’t work. I can’t eat chocolate.

I didn’t know I’d need a degree in calculus to get this joke, but I’m going to decrypt this code even if it kills me.

nrhatch - September 1, 2010

It won’t kill you, I promise. Unless you forget to keep breathing.

Breathing is good. I’d keep at it if I were you.

nrhatch - September 1, 2010

Breathing keeps us going, even when the going gets rough.

OOh! This is great! And thanks for the mention! BTW, this quiz I might have taken. . .but I dunno – me and math don’t get along too well! I might quit laughing before it wad all done. Besides, if I had gotten this one instead, I would have missed out on getting to do one of my snarky rants. 😀

Thanks, Paula!

I started with yours and changed it (including playing around with the numbers to figure out why it worked).

And I had to send people around to see your snarky rant! It’s so much fun making fun of chain-mail. : )

I’ll post the solution in Fun with Numbers on Sunday.

very nice blog. I’m becoming a fan of yours & these strange interesting stuff

nrhatch - September 3, 2010

yay!

After more than a few years on Earth, I have a significant collection of strange and wonderful stuff.

It’s great being able to “give it back.”

Thanks for stopping by.
