We’ve enjoyed some Fun with Words:

* From Foxes with Sockses to Speed Bumps
* From Anagram Antics to Aphorisms Aa to Zz
* From Doublet Challenges to Fun Puns

Now, lets enjoy some Fun with Numbers!

Specifically, let’s see if we can balance the books and get things to add up:

1.  Mathematical certainty is one thing, mathematical symmetry another:

1 x 8 + 1 = 9
12 x 8 + 2 = 98
123 x 8 + 3 = 987
1234 x 8 + 4 = 9876
12345 x 8 + 5 = 98765
123456 x 8 + 6 = 987654
1234567 x 8 + 7 = 9876543
12345678 x 8 + 8 = 98765432
123456789 x 8 + 9 = 987654321

2.  Who says that ONE is the loneliest number?

1 x 9 + 2 = 11
12 x 9 + 3 = 111
123 x 9 + 4 = 1111
1234 x 9 + 5 = 11111
12345 x 9 + 6 = 111111
123456 x 9 + 7 = 1111111
1234567 x 9 + 8 = 11111111
12345678 x 9 + 9 = 111111111
123456789 x 9 +10= 1111111111

3.  Why is “6” afraid of “7”?  Because 7 . . . 8 . . . 9.

4.  Another tower of power, featuring the numeral “8” ~ quite brilliant, eh?

9 x 9 + 7 = 88
98 x 9 + 6 = 888
987 x 9 + 5 = 8888
9876 x 9 + 4 = 88888
98765 x 9 + 3 = 888888
987654 x 9 + 2 = 8888888
9876543 x 9 + 1 = 88888888
98765432 x 9 + 0 = 888888888

5.  Finally, take a look at this gorgeous symmetry:

1 x 1 = 1
11 x 11 = 121
111 x 111 = 12321
1111 x 1111 = 1234321
11111 x 11111 = 123454321
111111 x 111111 = 12345654321
1111111 x 1111111 = 1234567654321
11111111 x 11111111 = 123456787654321
111111111 x 111111111 = 12345678987654321

Stay tuned.

This is awesome, Nancy. I love numbers ❤

nrhatch - August 30, 2010

Aren’t they cool??? : )

I love the certainty of numbers AND the nuances of words. Quite a nice life balance.

I admire the people who study these ‘pure’ math ‘equations’. I don’t believe that anyone has ever explained how these structures ‘happen’, though. There is more mystery in the universe perhaps than can be held as human ‘certainty’. The ‘symmetry’ in such configurations however gives me instead ‘faith’, which can be compared with Kant’s ‘Reason’, which is beyond our ‘understanding’. (The old Logos modernized) which for me, is far more efficacious.

With a bit of digging, I expect that I could find an explanation for each of these structures.

But I’d rather just soak up their beauty. ; )

Loreen Lee - August 30, 2010

No I doubt that if the pundits can’t do it, then you might also be at a loss. But that’s Kant’s explanation for just what is entailed by both Beauty and the Sublime. It puts us in touch, to use your word with Spirit, or the Reason which is beyond Understanding. Mathematical certainty is such because it is tautological. Music works on the same application of note to key-correspondence. Human certainty – based on words does not work in the same manner, and thus the continual nuance or referral to other words, ad infinitum.

Very cool, I hadn’t seen these ones before. Numbers are great!

nrhatch - August 30, 2010

Me too! As much as I love writing, I scored much higher on my Math SAT’s than on the English portion of the exam.

Logic, my dear Watson, has much to commend it.

4. Mstrongair - August 30, 2010

Nancy,
This is pretty cool! Thanks.

nrhatch - August 30, 2010

Glad you enjoyed, Maria.

Even math, with its certainty and symmetry, holds a bit of magic and mystery.

5. cindy - August 30, 2010

Eeeek, I am no good with numbers, so this just blows me away.

nrhatch - August 30, 2010

I love working with numbers and these still blow me away.

So elegant.

6. Joanne - August 30, 2010

I’ve seen these before and forgot about them until now… I’m going to use these in my math class tomorrow with the middle school kids I teach. Thanks!

nrhatch - August 30, 2010

Cool! How’s school?

Is the year off to a good start?

7. Tilly Bud - March 4, 2011

They are gorgeous! Thanks so much for pointing the way.
