Precious Illusions July 26, 2010

Alanis Morissette’s second album, Under Rug Swept, is a treasure trove of wisdom about relationships . . . especially the relationship we have with our self.

When we stop looking for validation from others, we no longer play the victim waiting to be rescued by our knight in shining armor.

We realize that we can be happy and complete without waiting for someone else to recognize our inherent worth.

We let our precious illusions drift away and find “BLISS” waiting within:

These precious illusions in my head
Did not let me down when I was defenseless
And parting with them is like
Parting with invisible best friends.

But this won’t work now the way it once did
And I won’t keep it up even thought I would love to
Once I know who I’m not then I’ll know who I am
But I know I won’t keep on playing the victim

Uncertain, we flipped a coin
A roll of the dice
To let the fates decide

Heads we would stay
Tails we would leave

Tails.

Two out of three?
Yes, of course!

Tails.

Three out of Five?
No.

Oh.

Let’s stay!
