Don’t Sweat The Small Stuff April 5, 2010

In his #1 New York Times Bestseller:  Don’t Sweat the Small Stuff . . . and it’s all small stuff, Richard Carlson addresses “simple ways to keep the little things from taking over your life.”

Filled with ancient wisdom, and current philosophy, this book reminds us to calm down and focus on things that really matter.

Some of my favorite topics:

Make peace with imperfection * Your In-Box will never be empty * Let others be right, most of the time * Will this matter a year from now?

Imagine yourself at your own funeral * Learn to live in the present moment * Smile at strangers * See the innocence in others * Become a better listener * Seek first to understand

Relax * Be Grateful when you’re feeling good, and graceful when you’re feeling bad * Do one thing at a time * Think of your problems as potential teachers * Lighten Up * Get comfortable not knowing

If someone throws you a ball, you don’t have to catch it * Keep asking yourself, what’s really important? * Be open to “what is” * Look for the extraordinary in the ordinary * Give up on the idea that more is better

His last, and perhaps best, suggestion is to “Live this day as if it were your last ~ it might be.”

Mickey-SurferNone of us know exactly how much longer we have to live.

It makes sense, therefore, to stop postponing things that we know, deep down, we long to do.

Life is a journey, not a destination.  Enjoy it!

No rules.  Just write!

I’m drenched in sweat from small stuff and it takes these reminders to bring me back to what it is all about. It really is small stuff and it’s eating me up; if I don’t stop soon and focus on the big stuff, primarily enjoying it, I really will be living my last day long before it should have been.
