Simple Pleasures ARE Life’s Treasures . . . and food often tops the list!
Fresh Market’s Toscano Pano, a dense hearty Tuscany Bread, elevates the humble Grilled Cheese sandwich to waist-defying heights, especially when partnered with Seriously Sharp Vermont Cabot Cheddar.
Grated. Not sliced.
Here, we’ve added a crisp just-harvested Royal Gala Apple and Lay’s Classic Potato Chips to round out a lunch of Simple Pleasures and Treasures.
Aah . . . that’s better!

Yummy!
Morning, Yaz! I hesitated to post this because I didn’t want to set a bad example. We tend to make healthier food choices than this . . . most days, anyway. But there are days when nothing but good bread and melted cheese will do!
Mmm I am trying to lose weight but it looks hard to resist!
I hear ya, aawwa. We don’t eat this way every day. Just sometimes, when we feel “indulgent.” (Tip: Don’t bother counting the calories or fat grams on your indulgent days because the ensuing depression would negate the comforting nature of this sandwich).
Most days, BFF and I try to eat healthier fare ~ with more fiber and less fat. We might still have a grilled cheese, but we would split the sandwich, bag the chips, and round out lunch with a crunchy side salad or veggie-based soup.
Love grilled cheese! Ever tried it with smoked Gouda on sourdough?” Oh my, talk about delish! (I love smoked Gouda in mac and cheese, too!)
That would be FAB, Suzi. Sourdough is wonderful . . . with lots of dense chewiness to it. Perfect for grilling. Gouda is a wonderful melting cheese ~ on bread OR pasta! Good choice!
The bread really makes a difference. Sometimes I add a thin slice of ham or thinly sliced tomato to my grilled cheese. The apple is a cool switch from the standard pickle. And then a knish would also…….
I am getting hungrier by the minute, Carl . . . a knish! I haven’t had one in ages. And it is the bread that raises the bar.
Tucking accoutrements inside a grilled cheese sandwich, panini, or quesadilla is a FUN way to play with our food ~ we sometimes add slivers of red pepper to grilled cheese. (Or tomatoes. But only if they are of the same calibre as the bread and cheese.)
In France, Sidewalk Bistros serve Croque Monsieurs and Croque Madames ~ one with ham and the other with turkey. With pomme frites. And a . . . OK. I have to stop now.
Looks good. Add a dash of cucumber for health food?
Hmmm … how about croque a la toad? No, perhaps not.
You’re right about the cucumber . . . we also nibble on carrot and celery sticks too. Except for on our truly indulgent days!
But a Croque Grenouille holds no appeal.
You had me at Grilled Cheese, Nancy!
I thought I might, SIG.
I would add some jalapeños to that sandwich
Ooh . . . that would be yummy! We often tuck red pepper into grilled cheese and jalapeños into quesadillas. Maybe next time we’ll reverse those assigned roles.
Trader Joe’s sells pain pascal (demi miche). It’s organic and whole wheat. I love, love, love that bread. I slice it thick and toast it with some brie on it, and I feel just like at home when it reaches my tastebuds.
Oh, that sounds fantastic, Milka. Trader Joe’s just opened near us but it’s 30 minutes away. Next time we’re down that way, I’m going in to get a few things and shall check out pain pascal.
Our Trader Joe’s is 10/15 minutes away and I wish they opened one up right in our town. They get bread baked daily in their stores and I love browsing that shelf. They now offer the pain pascal in a mini loaf, which is about a quarter the size of the big one and it’s just as good. For French person, that bread display looks like a Christmas tree!
We did get a loaf of whole wheat baguette on our first visit to Trader Joe’s ~ delish!
It looks delicious! CH makes the best grilled cheese sandwich! I like tomatoes on my grilled cheese when they are in season here.
Grilled cheese really is a SIMPLE pleasure . . . especially when tomatoes are ready to fall off the vine.
I do think a good bread can elevate a sandwich! A good cheese sandwich is true comfort food!
Bread often makes or breaks the sandwich ~ the better the bread, the more attention I pay to what I’m going to put on it.
